1. What were your expectations with the class?
- Coming into class, my expectations were to learn the basic poses of yoga. I came into this class thinking it would be an easy and relaxing class that would be a nice break from my stressful business and capstone classes. I thought we would be learning all of the poses I’ve heard so much about from friends who take yoga classes regularly. I expected to gain strength and learn how to become more flexible as the class went on. I was expecting to only do the poses and participate in yoga through the class and not have the opportunity to bring what I’ve learned to my everyday life.
2. How was what you experienced different from what you expected?
- As I said before, I expected to just learn the basic poses. However, I didn’t expect to learn the actual names of the poses or what the purpose of each pose was; I never realized there was a reason to each pose or any actual benefit. I didn’t expect to be using so many different muscles that I would be sore the next day and would be able to repeat the poses without any further instruction. I came into this class expecting it to be easy in the sense that the poses would be done once and then forgotten but I’ve learned that we need to continuously do the poses in order to understand the meaning and reap the benefits and gain the strength. This class is very different than any other fitness classes I have taken at Temple because I can take the poses and techniques I have learned in class and bring them to my home and outside class to practice. I knew yoga was about relaxing and finding a center but I didn’t expect to find a calmness and feel so relaxed after each class and after every time I participate in yoga.
3. How was your attitude affected by the experience of the postures, awareness, breathing and additional factors?

At the same time internal organs are toned and rejuvenated; the epidermal, digestive, lymphatic, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems are purified of toxins and waste matter; the nervous and endocrine systems are balanced and toned; and brain cells are nourished and stimulated. Although known to be at least 5,000 years old, yoga is not a religion and fits well with any individual's religious or spiritual practice. Anyone of any age, religion or life condition can practice yoga and derive its benefits. Yoga is the practice of putting the body into different postures while maintaining controlled breathing. ...Religions: Eastern and West 2 September 2014 The Four Yogas In Hinduism, there are four paths of yoga that are utilized as a reference guide that can help one along their spiritual journey towards self-realization. These paths provide different avenues that work for different people and are tailored towards certain temperaments so that one can choose the path that will provide them with the most success. According to Philip Novak, “Hinduism recognizes four paths of yoga or methods of self-transformation: the yoga of action (karma), the yoga of devotion (bhakti), the yoga of knowledge (jnana), and the yoga of meditation (raja yoga)” (Novak 34). These are paths to spiritual self- transformation that one can take after they have been taught that the controlling of the mind comes through meditation. Karma yoga is the pathway to self-transformation through work or action in the form of selfless service. Karma yoga appeals to those who have active temperaments. An example is given out of the book explaining that we are human machines made for action or work. Meaning, that our entire body, except for the reproductive apparatus merges together through action. The drive to work is mental not economical. We are by nature selfish beings, through Karma yoga we can step out of our spiritual ignorance through selfless actions. My injury was just a pinched nerve in my lower back so it was nothing serious or to be worried about in the long term. The problem I was faced with was that after I healed, which took a couple of months with no exercise, I couldn’t get motivated to go back to he gym and continue working out. After two months of doing nothing the last thing I wanted to do was start all over again with my workouts and it was frustrating when I would try. I then began trying different home workouts such as insanity, but at home there are so many excuses not to workout so this experiment didn’t last long. By this time it was the middle of winter and I had began to notice some odd things with my health and overall mental well-being. I gained about ten pounds, I felt tired all the time, my body ached, and my mood was dull. One day I had been talking with one of my friends about my recent observations of my health and told him that I thought the reason for my decline in health was that I wasn’t getting any physical exercise. His response was, “try yoga.” He didn’t say anything else to me and I started to fire off excuses why I didn’t want to. It was not that long ago that golfers came in all shapes and sizes and working out was in the back of their mind. Nowadays, each day a golfer does not spend in the gym or in the yoga studio, they are losing ground on their competitors. Amateurs are even finding that to have a more balanced and powerful swing, they must build the muscles that allow them to do so. Lifting heavy weights is not going to add distance and consistency however. A flexible and properly functioning body is built by adding yoga to a golfer's workout plan. Yoga builds the core muscles along with adding muscle endurance and a range of flexibility, which in turn leads to more consistent and powerful golf swings. Yoga also teaches you how to breathe and relax your body and mind, which on the golf course is an absolute must. According to Michael Brantl (2014), a TPI Level 3 Fitness Instructor, "yoga creates natural improvements in functional flexibility." ...Yoga beyond relaxation Yoga is a discipline most often seeked out for practices of breathing, physical meditation and postures (Streeter et al. 281). As well, yoga has been observed to elicit relaxation through its constant practice. This paper observes how yoga can provide more advantages in our daily lives based on two studies that use the discipline of yoga to make an impact on the hormonal and nervous system as well as physiological behavior. First study is by Streeter et al. has focused on the relevance that yoga has on brain GABA levels. (Streeter et al. 1145) GABA is a neurotransmitter released in the brain important for reducing excitability of neurons. Thus, low levels of GABA has been found in people with anxiety and mood disorders. In Streeter et al. study, participants between 18-45 were screened and placed into two groups; the experimental-yoga group and the walking-control group. Results for this study showed that the yoga group improved in the scale levels for mood and decreased anxiety in comparison to the walking group (Streeter et al. 1150). In addition, the results correlate with the increased GABA levels obtained during yoga intervention. Second study by Burkett et al. is focused on the use of yoga to regulate arousal, a non directive generalized activation of the body, affected by the intensity of an activity or situation.
