Women in the Workplace: The Glass Ceiling

If glass ceilings existed, they would allow people to see through to the world above them. Because glass is clear, those existing under such a ceiling might not, at first, even notice that a barrier was in place which separated them from higher levels. Yet if they tried to pass through, they would quickly learn that the ceiling prevented them from doing that. But let�s face it. Women have known about glass ceilings in the executive suite and throughout all levels of the workforce long before the Wall Street Journal highlighted the problem in March 1986. It was coined in the media to describe what happens to women when they are denied opportunity to the upper levels of executive management. Thousands of qualified women and minority men are routinely denied top level jobs in corporate America. But instead of calling it racism, sexism, or xenophobia, we call it the "glass ceiling." For people confronting these barriers, it is discrimination - plain and simple.

Glass ceiling" is a term that describes the artificial plateau, beyond which women and other minorities are denied the opportunity to advance to upper levels of executive management in corporate America (Castro, 1997). It has become a routine practice to deny thousands of qualified women the top level jobs, merited by their performance. The "glass ceiling" barriers toward women are nothing but an insidious form of sex discrimination, in violation of law(Feldman, 1997). Glass ceiling barriers exist at all levels of an organization and affect people at different levels in various industries. And while CEOs increasingly recognize the value of work force diversity, particularly at the management levels, glass ceiling barriers continue to deny women and minorities the opportunity to compete for and hold executive level position in the private sector.

However, according to the standards set by our society today, women still find themselves stereotyped as being the “less privileged” gender and are mistreated and also misunderstood because of this. During the development of this essay, it will be argued that our society is indeed unjustified in the way they go about treating women in the job and consumer markets. In this study young men were seen as the gender that is more deserving of mentoring and were perceived to be more competent than females. ...“Stuck in the Middle” From families with two parents to one and families with one child to multiple, families are all different. And, just as every family is different, every family has its own problems. The Wingfield family, in Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie,” is definitely different with its own unique set of problems. Amanda, the mother; Tom, the son; and Laura, the daughter, are all extremely detached from reality. They all live in a live in a world of fantasy. But, out of all three characters the daughter, who appears to be the most detached at first, is forced to be the most in touch with reality because of how she must be the mediator between her mother and brother. While all three members of the family are grown adults, they all still live in a cramped apartment together. And, the mother, Amanda, still treats both of her completely grown children as if they are still small children in need of constant guidance. Amanda is constantly correcting Tom and Laura, telling them how to behave or how to dress or even how to chew their food. Amanda also continuously reminisces on stories of how when she was a young girl in Blue Mountain, she had numerous gentlemen callers and expresses how Laura needs to obtain gentleman callers of her own. ...Dear Stuck in the Middle,               First off don’t beat yourself up about the problems in your relationship, we all go through them and I am sure it will get better. That being said, I do agree with you on this matter. The Never Ending Story was an amazing show. The actors in GPAC were pretty great. Moving away from my opinion now, I can give some details on what they play was really about and the meanings of each scene and characters. The plot pretty easy to follow and was actually very clever. This story used two levels of reality. This means that there were two different things going on at once, there was the boy reading the book and then there was the actually tale that was being told. Maybe that’s why your girlfriend had a hard time believing this was a good show, she maybe didn’t understand why there was just a random boy (who was played by an obvious girl) on the side of the stage. It seemed to be this modern fairy tale that seemed to somehow mash well with the reality today. This show spoke to the little scared child that is in all of us, it gave us hope and made us feel like the hero. The acting quality in GPAC could have been more professional, but it was a student production, so for what it was I feel it was pretty descent. We all make mistakes every now and then, it’s only natural. The costumes and the scenery were basic, but it was still somehow enchanting. I have devised a plan to cut traffic light stop times down. These are the steps needed to make this happen. Step one: place weight sensor plates about the size of a quarter every 12 feet starting 48 feet from the traffic light. Step two: sync the sensors to a main frame computer system that will trigger the light to switch colors based on the information it receives from the sensors. Step three: test the sensors with a trail run for one week. Step four: gather data and feedback from drivers who have used this route. Traffic lights are already wired into a mainframe with a timer system and could be switched out to this system very cost effectively based on my research and the cost of the sensors. Although things have slowly improved since the original movement for women's political rights movement: the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, women all around the world continue to be treated like they have less worth than a man.
