WIRE DRAWING
Objective

To know how copper and aluminum drawing is done, and also to understand the machine setting and how the machine operates.

Introduction

Wire drawing is the process by which a metal rod is forced through a series of varying cross section die(s) and hence the metal rod cross sectional area is varied so as to obtain the desired shape and size. In Kenwest cables company their are 3 wire drawing machines namely:- 1. M55 2. H20 3. M85
1.M55
This is the main copper drawing machine and the one which can handle the 1st drawing process which is hard drawing. The raw material used is usually copper rod of 7.9mm thickness as the hard drawing material. The M55 can also handle further copper drawing like the H20.

Operation procedure

The M55 has several units namely:- a) stand b) block c) drawing basin d) annealer e) spooler

a) stand
It is responsible in guiding the copper rod being fed to the block or drawing basin. If its hard drawing its fed to the block but when its further drawing its directly fed into the drawing basin. This is because at the block section the die obtained may have a larger diameter than the copper rod in the case of further drawing hence the block is not required.

b) Block
It is functional when hard drawing takes place. The 1st die is usually located in this section (the block section) hence drawing process begins at the block section. The copper rod being fed is usually about 7.9mm in diameter which is the diameter of the hard drawing copper. Animal fat is used in this section which acts as a lubricant to ease the process of the copper rod passing through the die. Jam oil cannot be used in this section because the block section does not have a system that supplies jam oil and recycle the jam oil for effective and efficient use.A thing to note is that the dies are made of a strong material called tungsten…...

Paper on the Wire

...The Wire Paper “The Wire” was a television program that aired on HBO from 2002 – 2008. It has received 2 Emmy nominations and is a critically acclaimed program that had received very positive reviews when it was still on the air. The characters on the program, both criminal and judicial, are all well-developed, rounded characters that help to display a realistic view of life in Baltimore, Maryland. One of the criminals on the program is a man named Omar Little. Barack Obama stated that Omar Little was his favorite character on the program: “He is not my favorite person, but he’s a fascinating character– a gay gangster who only robs drug dealers and then gives back. But he’s the toughest, baddest guy on the show, and he’s gay. He’s a fascinating character” (Goldman, 2009, p. 1). After watching several episodes of The Wire, it is easy to see why people like this character, even though he is a known criminal who has committed robbery and murder several times. Omar Little is a homsexual, black male, who is seen spending time with boyfriends, yet, he goes against the gay stereotype of being sensitive, and kind, and is one of the most dangerous criminals in Baltimore. He isn’t afraid to pull the trigger of his gun, and he participates in robberies of dangerous drug lords as well as getting involved in inter-gang rivalries. He displays a passion for poetry, and for Greek mythology (shown in Season 2). For a character like Omar Little to be understood, it is important to realize......

Resistance of a Wire

...metal wire, together with the physical dimensions of the wire, from which you will calculate the resistivity of the metal. Theory The resistance R of a component in a circuit is given by the equation V = IR where V is the potential difference across the component and I is the current in the component. The resistance of a wire is given by the equation R = ρl / A where ρ is the resistivity of the metal from which the wire is made, l is the length of the wire and A is its cross-sectional area. Using the circuit below, you will make measurements of current and voltage for different lengths of wire. You will plot a graph of resistance against length and from this you will calculate the resistivity. Resistance of a Wire

...of electron movement through the wire. Equation [pic] Factors which affect resistance Length of wire – this is being investigated Thickness of a wire – in a thin wire there are more possible paths for the electrons to pass through, therefore more electrons can flow through at one time, this increases the current which increases the resistance. Material of wire - wires of different densities will block more or less electrons Temperature - the vibration of warm molecules makes them more likely to collide with electrons, and resistance increases with temperature. Variables Independent- length Dependent - Voltage, current to measure, resistance Controlled - Temperature, material of wire, cross sectional area Circuit diagram Method 1. set up apparatus as shown above 2. measure out a 1m length piece of wire and connect it to the crocodile clips 3. close the switch 4. set the variable resistor so that you get a less biased result- below 0.5 amps 5. take down results from the voltmeter (V) and the ammeter (A) 6. open the switch so that the wire doesn’t heat up 7. work out the resistance using R=V/I 8. repeat three more times 9. use a different length of wire each time as shown in the table 10. repeat each length three times Safety Wear safety glasses Use very low currents below 0.5 amps because it may cause bias in results Prediction There will be a bigger resistance in the longer pieces of wire compared to the shorter ones......

Dna Extraction

...Extraction of DNA from an Onion Molecular biologists and biochemists are involved with research in finding out as much as possible about the DNA in plants and animals. Although DNA was discovered in the 1950’s, there still remains a lot to be known about it, especially how it is used to determine the physical traits that we all have, and how it regulates the workings of the body. We should always remember that DNA is just a chemical named deoxyribonucleic acid. Because it is a chemical, we can do reactions with it just like we can work with any other chemical. In this lab, we will use the chemical properties of DNA to extract it from the cells of onions. Experiment: Note: You should write all observations from this lab in the observation section on the third page of this lab. These observations will account for a large part of your grade, so be neat and complete! 1) Prepare a buffer solution by pouring the following into a clean 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask: - 120 mL of water (distilled water, if available) - 1.5 grams of sodium chloride (table salt) - 5.0 grams of baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) - 5.0 mL of shampoo or liquid laundry detergent What buffer solutions are used for: This buffer solution is used in this lab for several reasons. First of all, the saltiness and acidity (pH) of the solution is very close to that in living things; as a result, the DNA will like to dissolve into this solution. ......

Dna Extraction

...Date: 22/08/2013 Title: Extraction of genomic DNA Introduction: Isolation of genomic DNA is one of the most commonly used practices in several areas of science. Purified, high molecular weight DNA is used for many applications such as: * To prepare genomic DNA libraries * To isolate genes to be cloned * To carry out southern blotting and hybridization Many different methods are available for isolation of genomic DNA, and they all involve the following basic stages. * Disruption and lysis of starting material: * Cell walls and cell membranes are broken to release DNA and other cellular components. * Removal of proteins and other contaminants: * Protein contaminations are removed by digestion with proteinase K followed by salting out and denaturing some proteins by SDS. * Recovery of DNA: * DNA is precipitated using ethanol or isopropanol in the presence of monovalent cations All DNA isolation protocols have a common goal in isolating high molecular weight DNA, which meet the following three criteria: 1) Purity should be high enough for further downstream applications such as restriction digestion. 2) DNA should be intact to give accurate and reproducible migration patterns on gel electrophoresis. 3) Yield should be high enough to obtain a required quantity of DNA from a reasonable amount of tissue. Materials and......

Caffeine Extraction

...Abstract Caffeine is an alkaloid stimulant with a cyclic backbone structure analogous to the purine structures of DNA. Caffeine is found in numerous applications and can stimulate different parts of the body, possibly causing addiction, insomnia, and headaches. Using the proper extraction methods, the caffeine within a tea bag could potentially be isolated to yield a pure solid; the mass of this solid would reflect the actual yield of caffeine in the tea. Introduction Caffeine belongs to a large class of organic compounds called alkaloids, which vary widely in structure and reactivity. These nitrogen based compounds are found in plants and often taste bitter 2. Alkaloids can be found in different forms such as nicotine, morphine, or cocaine. The structure of caffeine is shown below along with the purine ring. Figure 1: Structure of purine and caffeine Caffeine is found in a number of foods and beverages. Such has chocolate, soda, and over the counter medication. The purpose of this experiment was to isolate caffeine that is found in tea by using the techniques of extracting, separating, drying, and sublimation. To do so, caffeine must be introduced to a solvent that is both volatile and insoluble to water; a perfect example is dichloromethane. Caffeine has a greater affinity for dichloromethane and will easily dissolve in this solvent over water; however, caffeine is not the only organic substance found in tea that is capable of reacting with dichloromethane.......

Man on Wire

...Man on Wire Imagine walking on a wire between the two of the tallest buildings in the world. This is exactly what a group of people plan to do with Philippe petit. The plan, consisted in braking into the twin towards and settle their equipment to connect both towers with a wire. Once everything was set petit, begin his journey walking on a rope thousands of feet above ground. As his journey ended, the police were waiting to punish him and his collies. Once the police got a hold of them, petit was giving a light punishment while his collies were expel from the country. In the film Man on wire, Philippe Petit and his friends plan to break into New Yorks twin towards to accomplish their dream goal. They knew it was not going to be easy, so they found ways to snick in and to get the measurement done before they accomplish something that has not been done. Petit and his friends knew that by trespassing was a sign of braking the law, but they did not had in mind that there were putting their lives at risk. For instance, what if Philippe Petit fell from the wirer or his friends fell down the building by setting down the tools they needed which will cause to hurt other people. They never saw it that way because they were too anxious to accomplish their goal. If they could break the law, why can’t I break the law the same way they did by using public space without permission? Philippe Petit and his group of friends were arrested and were given different punishments. In fact,......

...2014 Annual Report March 23, 2015 To Our Stockholders: You are cordially invited to attend the annual meeting of stockholders to be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 9:00 a.m., central time, at the corporate office of Encore Wire Corporation located at 1329 Millwood Rd., McKinney, Texas. The purposes of the meeting are to elect directors for the ensuing year, ratify the appointment of auditors for 2015, to approve, in a non-binding advisory vote, the compensation of the Company’s named executive officers and conduct other business that may properly come before the meeting. Net sales for the year ended December 31, 2014 were $1.167 billion, while net income for the year was $37.1 million, with fully diluted net earnings per common share of $1.78. Unit volume, measured in copper pounds contained in the wire sold increased 3.6% in 2014 versus 2013. Our new aluminum building wire plant finished its second full year of operations, during which we sold $103.4 million of aluminum building wire. We believe that our ability to sell aluminum wire has resulted in increased copper wire sales as customers prefer to “one-stop shop” and order enough pounds to get free freight. Aluminum demand is so strong that we are expanding the current 200,000 square foot aluminum plant with a 250,000 square foot addition. We believe that our costs are as low, or lower, than our competitors. We believe our superior order fill rates continue to enhance our competitive position, as our......

Extraction of Light

...Extraction of light trapped in special structured luminescent thin films Group discussion 3rd May 2014 Group members: Barbara Brudieu, Lucie Devys, Prof. Thierry Gacoin, and Gu Rong I. INTRODUCTION After almost two months’ internship, with a great help of Barbara and Lucie, I eventually manage to synthesize the DBR and all the solutions needed. Although some techniques still remain to be ameliorated and their theoretical meanings are also left to figure out, to have a small brainstorming at this moment is quite timely I suppose. It just happens to be the mid-point of combining Barbara’s DBR mirror with Lucie’s photonic crystal coupling system. By now, we’ve got three different DBRs (375nm, 620nm, 850nm and the gradient will be fabricated after this meeting) and each mirror has two types: 6 & 8 layers. Several optical measurements (Carry 50) and curves of calibration (TiO2-Eu(TTA)3 layer thickness) will be showed as flowing which are open for discussion. Hope this meeting will assess the work finished so far and give a clear direction for the further steps. II. DBRs The optical measurement of these mirrors is operated on Carry 50 and the corresponding simulation is carried out on Matlab (Reticolo). a. b. c. Figures a, b, c are DBRs of wavelengths 375nm, 620nm and 850nm. Curves left are optical measurement of transmission by Carry 50, curves right are the simulation associated. ...LAB#11 DNA EXTRACTION & KARYOTYPING ________________________________________________ Objectives: After completing this exercise, you should be able to: 1. Develop an understanding of the structure and properties of DNA, based on observation and manipulations 2. Understand some implications of DNA technology 3. Extract DNA from an onion to understand that all cells contain DNA Introduction/Purpose: DNA is too small to see under a regular microscope, so then how can it be studied? DNA is a large chemical molecule found in all living things, so it should be possible to extract it from cells or tissue. All we need to do is disrupt the cell’s plasma membrane and nuclear envelope, make the DNA clump together. DNA extraction is possible. Plant material is easy to use and DNA extractions from onion, bananas, liver, or wheat germ are common classroom activities or demonstrations. Plants used in agriculture and horticulture are often artificially selected for their large flowers and fruits. Strawberries are no exception. A reason for the size of today’s large supermarket strawberries is the octaploid nature of their cells. With eight sets of chromosomes, they have plenty of DNA for classroom extraction. The fruit is homogenized with a detergent to prepare a filtrate. The detergent emulsifies and forms complexes with the lipids and proteins of the plasma membrane this causes them to precipitate out of the solution. The mixture is then filtered through......

Wire Tidier

...people tripped because of the tangled wire. Tripped is category an accident where it might involve injury, wound and sometimes it may cause fatal toward individual. To avoid this accident from occur we as a team has design a product to solve this problem. This product is known as wire tidier. It is function to tidy the tangled wire. The mechanism of this product is based on the concept of retractable wire mechanism. This product has two major parts which are top part and lower part. The mechanism of this product is located inside these two parts. This application can be applied in varieties surrounding such as at home, school, workplace and industry. We chose to design this product because it is show that many people were injured after being tripped. Even thought, the injury sometime received by individual may minor but it is good to prevent it from major injury occur on the individual. Based on the finding in our team, the statistic is not shown is not specifically state the accident. However, this accident can be included in the since it occur at home, workplace and industry. Thus, we chose to make this design as our project. Objective There are four main objective for our product. First, to tidy the wire. When the wire is tidy, it will looks neat. So, there is no problems of tangled wire. Besides that, the probability of the wire to missing is reduced because of tidiness and the wire managed properly. Second, to......
