What is the main concept or characteristic of Tribes, Good to Great, the Butler article, and the videos we watched in class? Well there is one key ingredient that each of these sources highlighted and that was a strong culture. A company’s, a group’s, or an association’s core values were essential to its culture and those values would dictate whether or not they would be successful. So how do successful organizations create core values? First, in the book Tribes, Seth Godin explained that there need to be a group of people, who are all connected to each other, a leader to which they are all connected to and an idea that connects them all together. However, in Good to Great, Jim Collins shows that an organization’s tribe must be filled with the right people. The tribe must not only be connected through a shared interest and communication, but from a passion within each person that is for a greater cause. Therefore, the wrong people within an organization should be let go, while the right people should be brought in and put into the right seats. Getting a tribe together that has these core values is easier said then done. In Good to Great, it explains that there needs to be a leader in place that decides the direction in which the bus is going. Nevertheless, a highly capable leader cannot do this. Instead, a tribal leader that endures personal humility and personal will can.
When a tribal leader possesses a strong personal humility and a strong personal will, a tribe is committed to a much higher purpose. It creates an ambition amongst the organization that is not about the money, the personal success or the sheer fact of being number one, but instead on long-term results and sustained greatness. Zulu Tribe

...The Zulu Tribe Of Africa KwaZulu-Natal is the smallest province in South Africa, yet it contains the remnants of the once powerful Zulu tribe. The history of the Zulu people is rather short in comparison to other tribes in Africa. In this essay I hope to briefly discuss the Zulu history, what makes them unique, the Zulu religion, the interaction with the British colonial groups, how the Zulu nation came to come into power, and where the present day Zulu people stand in society today. It is not known exactly when or how the Zulu tribe came into existence, but it is thought it originated around the 1620’s. Because there is no real evidence that describes the origin of the Zulu people, one has to filter through some of the local folklore of the native people of what is now Natal. It is said that a man named Malandela and his wife, Nozinja, are said to have lived a nomadic life in the Babanango which is located in the northern part of Natal. In their search for grazing land for their cattle and better hunting grounds, Malandela and Nozinja eventually came upon an area of Natal where thy discovered the Mandawe Hill. This hill lies a few miles outside the present day town of Eshowe and provided an excellent view of his grazing cattle and an incredible amount of wild game. The Bago Tribe

...I have wondered before if I will have the chance to see the real beauty of life that I can’t find here in the busy city. But at last, after almost two hours of travel, I have seen what I am looking for; the clean river, the cold breeze, the leafy trees and the welcoming smiles of the Bago tribe, such an amazing treasures behind the mountains. Maybe it is the treasure in the end of every rainbow I see. For the pot of gold lie in the hearts of the tribe, their culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of the people. Despite of the developing municipality of Suyo, their culture remained; it is not damaged by the changes. They made sure that their culture will not die by letting the children learn in mind and heart their wonderful culture. The smiles in faces of the children showed that they really love what they are learning. It is soothing to the ears to hear their angelic voices; their ethnic dances made me forget the contemporary dances and how they beat their bamboo instruments made me feel the magic of nature. Even if I cannot understand what they are singing, I felt that they sing to show how proud they are to be part of the Bago tribe and to be thankful of all the blessings that God had given them. They gave thanks that day through a ritual, and a pig was butchered that I think is a sign of their respect and belief to the Lord. ...The Lost Tribe of Antiquity An explorer named Abel Cookman had finished his adventure and discovered a lost ancient tribe which he called ‘Antiquity’. He felt amazed by the language of this tribe, and so he made a lot of notes about this lost civilization. Unfortunately, he died, but he left the notes for an investigation of this mysterious tribe. This essay will discuss the geography and location, family, political, economic and trade and culture of Antiquity. Geography and location In the notes, Abel mentioned three dominant geographical terms, designating ‘undulating hills’, ‘dry river bed’, ‘expansive sand dunes’. However, there were no words for ‘snow’ and ‘ice’. What’s more, ‘no terms for fish, pork or veal.’ It suggests that the tribe might have been located in the desert. There are lots of sand dunes in the desert and they might be unable to see the end of the desert. In addition, he mentioned that there were no words for ‘ocean’, but several for fresh water were ‘spring’, ‘oasis’ and ‘water hole’. They didn’t have ‘ocean’ in their language. So, it is likely that they had never seen the ocean. ...Masai Tribes The Masai people are a Nilotic ethnic group residing in Kenya and Northern Tanzania. They are the most well known tribe of the African ethnic groups. Their elaborate dress sense and array of colours that are distributed amongst the tribes clothing, is memorable for their expression through what they wear. The language spoken by the Masai people is Maa and they are also educated in the official languages of Kenya and Northern Tanzania, which are English and Swahili. Despite often being encouraged by Kenyan and Tanzanian governments to abandon their faiths and traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, the Masai people are true to their culture and continue to live in the way they wish. History Originating from the lower Nile Valley north of Lake Turkana, the Masai people began to migrate south in the 15th century. Ethnic groups that resided in these areas were forced and pushed aside by the Masai people where they remain to live their life of rich culture and belief. Cushitic groups which were settled in these places when the Masai made their way inwards, were brought into their teachings and from then on the mixture of Cushitic and Nilotic populations were referred to as Nilo-Hamitic peoples. ...Ojibwe Tribe form part of the Algonquian family. They are known to be the biggest and the most widespread but besides this point they are also known for their cultural beliefs and arts. The Chippewa originally comes from Ojibewa Tribe. In 1660 The Ojibewa Tribe migrated westward and divided into three groups and Chippewa being one of the groups. They are called Anishabeg as well meaning the “first” or “original people”. The Chippewa are located near the shore of Lake Superior while the other two groups Potawatomi and Ottawa are located near Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The Chippewa Tribe had many contact with Europeans which they picked up different things from the Europeans. This isn’t the only thing that changes them from other tribes though. The Chippewa are differed from many other tribes nearby because having a “puckered” style. They would all use a moccasin style that is different from many tribes. Due to them having contacts with the French they became more known for their beadworks. The way they would do the beadwork was just like how they learned from the French but varied a little. The women and young ladies started making beadworks at a mid-age of the time the Chippewa were all together. The women would use a needle and put beads on clothing or other fabrics. ...Tribes: The Study of an Online Community Tribes is an online multiplayer game where different missions, worlds, weapons, and players combine to create a defend and destroy kind of gaming experience. Players use mouse, key, and voice commands to target and destroy the enemy as they sneak around trying to capture the other team’s flag and return it to their own base. But it is more than just a game that these players have created with. They have created a whole with an interactive website leading to discussion forums and chat rooms, where the action really takes place. Call it a behind the scenes look at Tribes. Teams are put together, players are taught and assisted, and even more so, long-lasting friendships are made. I studied the discussion forums of Tribalwar.com and continually entered the Tribal war chat room hosted by the server irc.dynamix.com for a period of two weeks. I found an online community full of life constantly being infested with anything from small talk to serious gaming talk. In the article “Log on and Shoot,” Katie Hafner discusses online gaming becoming a sort of addiction. She claims it is turning into a “virtual party” and that oftentimes the game becomes the underdog when conversation takes over (Hafner 75). Summary of David Bereby's Essay 'It Takes a Tribe"

...Summary of ‘It Takes A Tribe’ by ‘David Berreby’ David Berreby is a research writer, who has deeply observed and analyzed the human nature of association, in his prose ”It Takes A Tribe”. Berreby claims, through his prose, that humans automatically and subconsciously, want and try to become a part of something larger than them (9). Prof. Mahzarin R. Banaji, who led a study about ‘subconscious tribal beliefs’, argues that people act accordingly once divided into groups, even if they know that the divisions are arbitrary and futile (‘It Takes A Tribe’ 10). Many of the surveys and examples presented in Berreby’s article are based on the college life of students. Berreby demonstrates that a college campus breeds competitive spirit and therefore tribalism (9).
