Leavenworth is the most dreaded facility in the prison system because of its fierce population; it is governed by ruthless clans competing for dominance. Pete Earley features the inmates in Leavenworth, who have certainly been placed there because they have been convicted of dark and desperate deeds, have been transfigured by their imprisonment into something far darker. The book is an eyewitness account of day-to day life inside the United States penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas the oldest federal prison and one of the most dangerous in the nation. The books major players consist of Carl Bowles, the sexual predator with a talent for murder; Dallas Scott, a gang member who has spent almost thirty of his forty-two years behind bars; Robert Matthews, the warden, who seems to be an essentially decent man in an indecent place; Thomas Silverstein, a sociopath confined in no human contact status since 1933 and career bank robber William Post who finds meaning in caring for the cats who have found a home live inside Leavenworth's walls. The story that these inmates - and their guards - tell of life in Leavenworth is one filled with rituals of violence no less potentially deadly because of their ritualistic quality and an astonishing degree of egotism and self-approval in men who have done terrible things. Prisoners who show signs of rage deserve to be locked in solitary confinement, I believe prisoners need to see what it is really like to suffer for their crimes instead of getting free healthcare and being able to graduate with their GED, committing a crime does not mean special privileges when in prison.
Leavenworth is two independent structures, one within the other a great stone building dropped like a cake dish over a rectangular, five story tall row of the building like a giant honeycomb: side by side, one row atop the other and back to back, so each cell…...

Hot Zone

...John Doe English 112P 4 November 2009 Historical Perspective on The Hot Zone The Hot Zone by Richard Preston is a nonfiction book with aspects of a novel. Sometimes called a bio-thriller, it is about the Ebola virus in America. It was written to address a time of fear about viruses in the United States in a time of increased international interaction. Although its impact is negligible, it reflects the nervous attitude of the time. Richard Preston writes narrative nonfiction. Narrative nonfiction is a hybrid style of writing that utilizes the framework of nonfiction with aspects of a novel, dialogue, for instance. Preston favors this style and wrote his dissertation on it during his graduate studies in Princeton. Previously, Preston wrote non-fiction on science such as Astronomy and on History; later his focus shifts to the science of Microbiology. In 1992 Richard Preston wrote an article in The New Yorker, entitled “Crisis in the Hot Zone.” Two years later, this article became the foundation for his non-fiction book, The Hot Zone, which documents the appearance of Ebola in the United States during the late eighties. At the time The Hot Zone was conceived, free trade policies during President George H. W. Bush’s administration were still making an impact worldwide. Bush set forth global objectives, renewing an interest in globalization under the belief that a global market will alleviate America’s growing deficit. Furthermore, he spearheaded the construction of......

A well-executed trade promotions program will be instrumental in moving Hot Fire into national prominence. The main trade promotions objectives for Hot Fire Fuel Injector Cleaner begin with the overall goal to drive consumer demand, increase sales, and build a reputable corporate image. In order to boost demand, a business must increase its product visibility and brand awareness. According to Clow and Baack (2014), “A strong brand image causes retailers to stock the product even when fewer trade deals are offered, because a strong brand by itself can help pull customers into retail stores” (p. 346). Hot to Guide

...twice weekly, for six weeks. She was in a youth service program where she had chosen her own assignment. She was needed there. She was engaged in tasks that mattered to others. But she'd seen, felt, and experienced virtually nothing. It's not supposed to be that way. People are supposed to learn from experience. In fact, a central part of the case for youth service rests on claims for the possibility even necessity, of learning from experience. To say that experience is a good teacher, however, does not imply that it's easily or automatically so. If it were, we'd all be a lot wiser than we are. It's true that we can learn from experience. We may also learn nothing. Or we may, like Mark Twain's cat who learned from sitting on a hot stove lid never to sit again, learn the wrong lesson. The key, as Aldous Huxley explained, is that "experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happened to him." "Reflection …can allow program experiences to live on in the students' lives in new experiences and new learning." Conrad and Hedin Rewards of Reflection The purpose of this chapter is to provide practical suggestions for encouraging young people to reflect on their experiences: to think about them, write about them, share them with others, learn from them. This is not so easy to accomplish. Serious reflection is seldom the preferred activity of active young people. Its value is not always immediately obvious, and is......

Hot Tub

...hovering around 45 degrees. On coming home they decided to relax in their hot tub with some wine. While Roma changed from her work clothes, Clint said that he would join her in the hot tub after he took his Lasix. Saturday, 8am “911… Please state your emergency.” “Oh, Oh, I… I… ” “Ma’am, please calm down and tell me the address.” “I think…, yes, OK, it’s… it’s 2560 Oak Creek Drive.” “What is the problem, please?” “I’m the maid for Mr. and Mrs. Underhill and… and I didn’t find them in the house when I came in this morning, so I looked around outside. I just found them in their hot tub out back. They are under the water. Please come, please come now!” “Yes, ma’am, I’m alerting the EMTs and an ambulance will be on the way. Please go out front and wait, so the paramedics can find the address quickly.” Saturday, 8:10am Paramedics Kavita Dickson and Larry Gonzales brought the ambulance to a stop at the end of a long driveway next to an impressive two-story mansion. The maid was on the front steps and quickly directed them to the back patio where the hot tub could be seen. Empty bottles of wine were on the ledge surrounding the hot tub. Kavita quickly climbed up the steps and saw the bodies of the Underhills on the bottom of the hot tub. As she got into the water, she exclaimed, “This water seems really hot. Let’s see if we can get them out.” Larry climbed in after her and together they dragged the bodies out of the hot tub and onto the patio. It was obvious that both had been......

Hot Tubs

...The Fully Realized Hot Tub Human -Marilyn Owen Poet and speaker, David Whyte, likes to sprinkle his talks about poetry, creativity, and philosophy with wry references to the “fully realized hot tub humans in California”. (1) I understand the stereotype he gently mocks; those who believe enlightenment will come easily through the pursuit of pseudo-spiritual states of ‘bliss out’. The remark never fails to make me smile and wince, because I am one of those humans. Sort of. Here’s the case for my thesis. You be the judge. My love affair with hot tubs started, appropriately, with sex. Not just any sex, but passionate, sensual, first-of-its-kind cosmic sex in a backyard Jacuzzi. You don’t have to be a brain scientist to imagine the neurological frenzy that ensued of mapping the erotic pleasuring of the body with heated water and air jets. Scientifically speaking, repetition of the experience created a finely tuned sequence of synaptic firings that ensured a conditioned response. In other words, just dipping my toe into hot water began to make me feel happy. And this was good. Then came the first visit to Esalen, where I went to look for myself during my early 30’s. I was transfixed by the nirvana of those mineral baths, perched above the cliffs, full of contentedly naked people. Being considerably “plus-size”, it took a lot of courage to bare all in order to join the Esalenites in their sacred spring. But this act of bravery proffered the most important gift of......

CASE NOTES Courts split as to whether consumers injured by hot coffee can seek recovery by Zachary Rami Common sense, coffee and consumers clashed recently in McMahon v. Bunn-O-Matic,l wherein the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals held that a coffee maker manufacturer did not have a duty to warn consumers that its coffee would be served at 180 degrees, and that the coffee maker was not defectively designed. The decision, which affirmed a lower court's entry of summary judgment in favor of the coffee maker manufacturer, is consistent with a majority of courts, which have held in recent years that such claims leave no issue of material fact for trial.' However, not every jurisdiction has routinely dismissed these "coffee" cases. In fact, McMahon referred to Nadel v. Burger King,3 which held that a products liability claim for excessively hot coffee was......

Hot Spots

...of a hot spot. (7marks) Hot spots are anomalies in the pattern of volcanic activity upon plate margins. They are often in the middle of plates. A hot spot can be described as a small area of the earth’s crust where an unusually high heat flow or plume is associated with volcanic activity. Of approximately 125 hot spots thought to have been active over the past 10 million years most are located well away from plate boundaries. It is the fact that they have posed so much trouble for plate tectonic theories, as they don’t fit with the general trend that most seismic and volcanic activity happens at margins. There are several examples of volcanic activity away from plate boundaries such as Yellowstone national park. These hot spots are formed by huge columns of up swelling lava because of radioactivity within the earth, these columns are known as plumes. The plume of plastic molten rock that pushes upwards; causing pressure to drop and the plastic thin rock to become molten, melting and pushing through the crust above. These plumes lie in fixed positions under tectonics plates. As the plate moves over the hot spot, the upwelling lava creates a steady succession of new volcanoes that migrate across the plate. These plumes can be up to 1000km across. The emperor sea mount chain is a good example of plume activity; showing the variation of activity within the succession as the plates move over the plume. This chain extends 5000km along the Pacific Ocean. The first hot spot...

Hot Topic

...makes Hot Topic so successful as a retailer? What makes them so popular with their employees? How can they keep their success going? Hot Topic is a successful retailer because "the culture is based on a passion for a concept." The passion that drives the company is shared throughout all levels and positions. Music is the passion and it inspires everything from design of the stores to the hiring of an employee. According to www.merriam-webster.com passion is defined as "a strong liking or desire for concept." If hiring people with a passion for music and we know our passions help us thrive and excite us, this alone speaks about the company on a larger scale. They offer a great working environment where they feel they can fit in and feel appreciated for what they contribute to the company. "[They also] value collaboration, open communication, and empowerment, and is perpetuated by a lack of walls and doors in the headquarters." In order to produce consistent success for as many years as they have they have to have an environment that encourages and celebrates innovation and creativity. Their flow and need for communication is also a basis for their success. If they continue to hire passionate people, success will be continuous because being passionate is being invested. The policy of openness was and is still part of the success and contributed a good deal to its growth. How does the idea of no walls and no doors in the corporate headquarters encourage the culture Hot......

...  Hot Rod Marketing Terry Walsh knew the time was right to move from being a small, “garage-based” company to a much larger enterprise. After spending years as a research chemist, Terry had launched out on his own. His goal was to develop a top-of-the-line fuel injector cleaner for both domestic and foreign automobiles. For 2 years, he worked with various formulas until the right one emerged. The product was named Hot Fire Fuel Injector Cleaner, and the company’s name was Hot Fire. Terry was positive Hot Fire would perform well against any competitive product.  The market for fuel-injector cleaners is diverse. Numerous backyard mechanics sell limited amounts of their concoctions to local merchants and over the internet. Several formulas are even available on eBay. There is no guarantee of quality for these products, some of which may actually harm engine performance. At the other extreme, major companies such as STP, Gumout, and Dupont offer various grades of cleaners, from low-end products selling for around $3 per unit up to high-end versions priced as high as $30. The primary price determinant is the degree to which the product reduces congestion in a fuel injector. The higher-priced entries are more powerful and remove more “gunk.” Terry’s Hot Fire Fuel Injector Cleaner was at the high end. The price would be $17 wholesale, per can. He hoped that dealers would charge no more than $25 as a retail price. Hot Fire sold in single containers as well as in multipacks of 6......
