Throughout high school people tend to associate with people like themselves whether it be cheerleaders with other cheerleaders, honor students with other honor students, or even music lovers with other music lovers. Through all these different types of people in one high school setting, two groups stand out above all, high school athlete participants (student-athletes) and those who do not participate in high school athletics (regular students). From available time outside of school, to diversity in additional activities, student-athletes and regular students share and differ in these aspects of high school.
Three-a-days in addition to summer workouts, practice five days a week, a multitude of games, the playoffs, the injuries, and the pressure are all the difficulties and grinds a typical high school student-athlete faces. Whereas regular students face the standard seven-hour school day, maybe an hour or two of club activities, and then seven free hours to do whatever one might desire. A student-athlete faces practices and workouts until the evening only to come home to eat a quick dinner and hit the books hard studying late into the night. With practices or games lasting so late into nights, student-athletes face restricted time in available free time for necessary studying and sleeping. On the other hand, regular students arrive home from school in the late afternoon with hours ahead of them before even a family dinner or a primetime television show is broadcasted. Thus, providing regular students with necessary study time to achieve “nerd” status and make the oh so honorable “straight A’s”. Although student-athletes struggle in receiving necessary study time and free time to achieve high grades and do as they please, they are required to go to school (forget about those few jocks that skip) five days a week and take the same classes, receive the same number of…...

... A Conceptual Model of Academic Success for Student-Athletes Summary Student-athletes are a nontraditional group burdened with many demands and expectations. Collegiate sports are a popular mass commercial form of entertainment and generate millions of dollars. NCAA Division 1 sports generated 751 million dollars in revenue this year at the expense of student-athletes’ academic goals. Graduation rates for athletes are lower than traditional groups. Support services have not consistently or effectively enhanced learning and personal development of student-athletes. Analysis Athletes spend 40 hours a week on sport related activities decreasing time for academic pursuits and productive activities. This time is spent with other athletes and coaching staff which impairs personal development and social integration. The rigorous schedule leads to physical exhaustion and nagging injuries. This hampers attention to educational pursuits and goal attainment. Educational Importance Colleges and universities have a duty to provide the best educational experience possible for its students. ...Pay Student Athletes The word student-athlete refers to a student who is playing a sport in college and receiving scholarships in return. On the surface, most people sees great athletes getting a free education, but they deserve more than just free education such as extra rewards and benefits since the college, the conferences and the NCAA are making billions of dollars off of them. To be in a nationally televised game or making deep runs in tournaments can bring in a lot of money for the colleges and universities. But the colleges and the sponsors collect all of the profits and not a single penny goes to the student-athlete and that is unfair. Colleges and the NCAA are making these students basically their unpaid employees. The student-athlete put so much work into the current sport they are playing, in return they get nothing. In my opinion, the student athletes should get a stipend with the scholarship they are getting. The system of college sports is at fault; the student-athletes are making colleges and private companies billions of dollars while not getting anything for themselves. People do not see that the student-athletes have to go practice every day and only have a little time to study. The mean total point score on the survey was 17.48 + 1.71. The mean score on knowledge questions on the survey was 11.59 + 3.14 or 46.3%. Females had a slightly higher mean score (12.3+ 3.03 or 49.2%) than males (10.9 + 3.13 or 43.6%) on the knowledge questions. The mean score on attitude questions was 5.89+ 1.67 or 58.9%. Females had a slightly higher mean score (6.19 + 1.53 or 61.9%) than the males (5.60 + 1.76 or 56%) on the attitude questions. A multiple regression analysis for impact of sport, gender, class rank, previous nutrition course, and eating situation on total score on the survey gave an overall R2 of 0.174 (F= 3.75, p= 0.004). There was no significant unique effect of class rank (p = 0.084), sport (p= 0.079), and eating situation (p= 0.079) for this model. Do student athletes deserve to be compensated for the time they put in to their sports program? Many student athletes say yes while the sports professionals say no. I spent the day walking around Sacramento State University talking with students as well as a few athletes asking if the athletes should be compensated for the work they do representing the school? The answers I received were quite surprising. I followed this up with research on the internet and this is where the controversial topic starts. I spoke with Sac State Hornets Basketball Player, Dylan Garrity who agreed that, “paying players would not take away from the competitive nature of the game. The true injustice is not that some athletes are being paid but rather that more are not (Branch). Varsity athletics have evolved immensely since their inception in 1869 as a toughening agent to prepare American men for a new era of Darwinian struggle (Branch). College sports have become a lucrative industry, built on a free labor source unavailable in any other business (Palutsis). Yet despite the billions of dollars college athletes generate for their universities, they earn nothing for themselves. The restrictions placed on athletes by the NCAA not only prohibit the payment of a stipend to help cover the cost of attendance but they also prevent student-athletes from marketing themselves, cutting them off from potentially lucrative opportunities. A large proportion of these student-athletes come from low-income families who can barely afford to keep them in school even with the help of an athletic scholarship and to cut these people off from this potential source of income is cruel and unfair. A very popular question that has been lingering around the sports world for sometime now is whether or not student-athletes should get paid. There are a lot of different opinions about this topic. The NCAA does not allow student-athletes to receive any type of benefits of any kind from the university; if the student-athlete does, he is no longer an amateur athlete and can no longer compete at the college level. This problem has been common over the past years and is causing athletes and universities to be penalized. If the NCAA would allow student-athletes to receive some benefits this would not be as common. They are respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. While spending time on practice and competition with their teams, they are also committing themselves to being a full-time student, which is not always easy to balance. Clearly, many student athletes are very dedicated to their sport and their teams. Some are working in hopes of furthering their athletic careers, while others know this is an opportunity to participate in sports to make enduring friendships and learn valuable life sills. The NCAA is one of the top organizations in the world that brings in billions of dollars in revenue on college athletics alone most notably with college football and college basketball. Yes some of these athletes do get compensated with some sort of scholarship which does help out with their expenses but the chances of an athlete receiving an athletic scholarship that is worth anything meaningful is less than 2%. A full ride scholarship might as well be compared to as finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In cases that an athlete does receive a scholarship this does not come close to covering the expenses of tuition yet alone all of the other expense such has room and board, food and everything else a human being needs to survive. I also agree with this argument in the fact that it is your jersey with your name on it, you should be able to do whatever you want with it. Ethical principles act as a guide when facing ethical dilemmas and can be helpful in making an organizational or personal decision (Trevino & Nelson, 2007). Organizational Issues and Social Pressures The issues in this video clip are in regard to student-athlete performance.
