Role as a Leader
In 2008 during my residential semester of BRAC University, I lead to arrange a cultural program as a cultural president of my dormitory. Our dorm was “Nikunjo” which consist of 32 boys, where all most all of them were unknown to each other as it was only their second semester in university. The purpose of our residential semester was through competition of different activities like cultural, sports and social among the dormitories helping us to know each other’s potentialities as well as making friendship among them. So as a cultural president I took it as a challenge to arrange a cultural program that will be best among the dormitories and will help 32 students to come close to each other. I employed S3 style which means participating style as I believed to serve the purpose of growing friendship among the new students as well as to bring the best of their potentialities I had to allow them to participate in decision making. There were 6 dormitory among them 3 for the boys and 3 for the girls. After a week after another, each dormitory were allowed to arrange the cultural program with the help of its own students. So, in the whole semester each dormitory were allowed just once to put up a show. We were the 2nd among the 6 and 1st among the boys in the sequence of performance. That gives us one advantage & one disadvantage as well. The advantage was we could introduce new ideas and thoughts before any dormitory did and the disadvantage was we got less time to arrange and organize then the rest four dormitories. I was excited to utilize my advantage. As a leader I want to use all 32 students on the basis of just one month observation and the friendly relation I built with them. After successfully completion of the program I was feeling great as our entire teachers praise us a lot and told that whatever happens in the whole semester by other dorms…...

Leadership Styles The authoritarian leader tells people how they want things done without discussing it with others. This style is commonly seen used in services such as the Army, where a strict role of discipline is expected from soldiers under higher commands. In war, there is no time to think so a set task can help prevent deaths and mistakes. It also helps newer recruits know what to do when they need to. Authoritarian leadership is useful when working with time restraints and deadlines. These leaders often keep their team motivated which allows jobs to be finished quickly and effectively and allows the best equipped to be making decisions. However, it may lead staff to feel unappreciated and angry. This style can also prevent staff from developing their own initiative. Leadership is needed in every work environment across the world, but what are the key elements that make up a successful leader? Before beginning to explore and breakdown what elements make a virtuous leader, we must understand what leadership is.
