POLAR REPRESENTATION Polar Representation An Initial Study of the Problems at the Portland Plant The purpose of this work is to explore the performance objectives of the Portland Plant. They have been losing money for years and they are unable to identify the reason. Without internal changes they will be unable to acquire new production contracts and they may be forced to close the business. Portland is unaware that their company values are leading them to extinction. Analysis The five performance objectives (in no specific order) are quality, speed, dependability, flexibility, and cost (Slack, Brandon-Jones, and Johnston, 2013. p. 46). Under current operations, I believe the Portland Plant ranks their objectives in the following order: (1) cost, (2) speed, (3) quality, (4) dependability, (5) flexibility. Portland's emphasis on cost became evident in May 1998 when they discovered they had produced a large quantity of product that did not meet quality specifications. “…we had to throw away 64 jumbo rolls of out-of-specification product. That’s over $100,000 of product scrapped in one run” (“Turnaround at the Portland Plant,” 2007). The main concern in this statement is the monetary value of the loss, not the cause and/or correction of the malfunction or why so much product was created before production was stopped. Because each of the performance objectives has an effect on cost, "... one important way to improve cost performance is to improve the performance of the other operations objectives" (Slack et al., 2013, p.58). If Portland chooses to emphasis quality over cost, operational costs would be expected to decline.

...The Politically Correct Private Investigator: Not Much Different From The Old Guys People who read detective/Private Investigator (P.I) fiction do so because they are attracted to certain elements that they can expect and enjoy from this genre. Indeed, it seems de rigueur that the hero should have certain character traits and face certain problems in certain ways. In a chapter titled “The Private Investigator,” in fact, we read that a typical investigator will be, male, hard-boiled, an expert on the city, a loner, streetwise, tough, physical, and a mixture of an idealist and cynic. In, however, “Lost Polars,” we see that the author wants to add the novelty of a female character, while maintaining the integrity of the detective genre. Therefore, in Shelley Singer’s depiction of Barrett Lake, the salient and correlative aspects of the archetypal qualities of a private investigator are not tainted with progressive, feminist values. Even though Lake is a woman, she still typifies the noir, solitary hero who stands up for justice even in the face of circumstances that would break the morale of anyone else. ...Overview Combined water and sewer rates in Portland, Oregon are among the highest in the United States. A 2007 survey by Black & Veatch put Portland No. 1 on the list of 50 largest cities water and wastewater survey and No. 6 in 2010.[1] A proposed five year rate increases which started in July, 2011 by the Portland Water Bureau is likely to push Portland's water bills significantly above the average for the 50 largest U.S cities. Portland's combined water and sewer bill would likely total $346 by the year 2015.[2] Quarterly bills for typical residential customers have risen from $74 to $84 in July 2011 following a 13% increase by the Portland Water Bureau.[3] These spiking increases are as a result of a Federal regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency effective 2014 which requires drinking water sources to be guarded against the chlorine-resistant parasite, cryptosporidium which Public Water Bureau of Portland believe to be non-existent in the pristine waters of the Bull Run. About 25 percent of the water rate increases is tied to the Environmental Protection Agency's mandates that Portland deal with cryptosporidium which the City of Portland initially contested but lost. UW has an elite player in Isaiah Thomas but UW has lost to the only 2 elite top ten programs they have played. They had a 7 point loss to Kentucky and 5 point loss to Michigan State. ...A Polar Expedition Fridjof Nansen, a Norwegian explorer, was in of the great Artic explorers of his time and made leaps in the field of Oceanography. “Nansen a well-known athlete, zoologist, and explorer was interested in the currents of the polar seas” (Sverdrup 2014 pg. 14). He was a clear headed man who didn’t let other’s opinions influence him and was willing to take risks in his work. All of these combined make him an excellent topic for an oceanography paper. Fridjof Nansen was more however then just an oceanographer.
