Organisational Citizenship Behaviours: A Review of Theoretical and Empirical Literature on Predicting Factors and Suggestions for Future Research.
In today’s competitive business environment organisations constantly strives for achieving excellence by enhancing employee’s efficiency and effectiveness. One way, organisations can achieve this objective is through Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) (Bolino & Turnley, 2003; Organ, 2006). Organ and colleagues first conceptualized OCB in 1988. Organ (1988, p.4) defined OCB as “individual behaviour that is discretionary, not directly or explicitly recognised by the formal reward system, and that in the aggregate promotes the effective functioning of the organization.”
Researches have identified numerous dimensions of OCB (Podsakoff & MacKenzie, 1997). Organ (1988) suggested a five-factor model composed of five dimensions; altruism, courtesy, conscientiousness, civic virtue and sportsmanship, which most conceptualisations of OCB are based on. Altruism refers to behaviours that involve helping another person, such as helping a colleague with a heavy workload. Courtesy involves being polite and courteous to prevent work related problems, for example, informing a coworker or a change that may affect them introduced by you. Conscientiousness refers to doing more than just the minimum to prevent and minimize error, in terms of attendance and punctuality. Civic virtue refers to employees genuine concern and interest in the existence of the organisation (Podsakoff, MacKenzie, Paine, & Bachrach, 2000), for example attending meetings and keeping up-to-date with issues facing the organisation. Sportsmanship involves employees tolerating less-than-ideal conditions and being accepting of changes. ...Accounting Information and Predicting Financial Performance Financial ratios are often relied upon as a leading indicator of future financial performance by businesses. These accounting ratios and other company specific accounting information can be especially good predictors in the short run, but as the time horizon extends beyond a few years, these metrics lose predictive value. There are simply too many macro and external factors that the hard numbers cannot account for over the long-run. One way in which these accounting ratios have been tested with regards to predicting future financial performance is by back testing firms that entered bankruptcy. In his study of Italian corporate firms over a 3 year periods, Marco Muscettola used 32 accounting ratios to test the ability of those ratios to forecast future defaults. The two groups of ratios he found to be most predictive were capital structure ratios and debt coverage ratios. This is a logical conclusion as these ratios focus on liquidity and the ability for a company to meet its future obligations. The capital structure ratios evaluate the various ways a company uses debt to create assets by dividing long-term liabilities, debt, and payables by total assets to assess leverage. Debt coverage ratios seeks to evaluate the cost of financing by measuring interest expense as a percentage of total debt and sales and evaluate how total debt compares to sales and current liabilities. ...Predicting borrowers’ chance of defaulting on credit loans Junjie Liang (junjie87@stanford.edu) Abstract Credit score prediction is of great interests to banks as the outcome of the prediction algorithm is used to determine if borrowers are likely to default on their loans. This in turn affects whether the loan is approved. In this report I describe an approach to performing credit score prediction using random forests. The dataset was provided by www.kaggle.com, as part of a contest “Give me some credit”. My model based on random forests was able to make rather good predictions on the probability of a loan becoming delinquent. I was able to get an AUC score of 0.867262, placing me at position 122 in the contest. 1 Introduction Banks often rely on credit prediction models to determine whether to approve a loan request. To a bank, a good prediction model is necessary so that the bank can provide as much credit as possible without exceeding a risk threshold. For this project, I took part in a competition hosted by Kaggle where a labelled training dataset of 150,000 anonymous borrowers is provided, and contestants are supposed to label another training set of 100,000 borrowers by assigning probabilities to each borrower on their chance of defaulting on their loans in two years.
