Sales and Profit

Entire Nokia Group

Nokia did not have a good sales performance in 2012. According to its 2012 financial report, the net sales of Nokia in 2012 was only 30176 EURm, 22% less than the net sales in 2011. The gross profit in 2012 was only 8390 EURm, 26% less than the gross profit in 2011. The decreased net sales and gross profit was believed to be negatively affected by the increasing momentum of competing smartphone platforms relative to Nokia’s Symbian smartphones in all regions. During the first half of 2012, net sales and profitability were adversely affected by its lack of affordable full touch devices which continued to be a growing part of the market.

Accounting Reports

...A set of financial statements for a company includes three related accounting reports. These reports are called; Statement of Financial Position, Income Statement, and Statement of Cash Flows. A statement of financial position, also known as a balance sheet, displays the financial position of a company at any given date/time. It consists of three key categories: assets, equity, and liabilities. Statement of financial position aids the users of these statements in evaluating the financial reliability of a company in terms of its risk; financial, credit, and business risk. These statements can help identify underlying trends in the financial position of the company which would assist the manager. The investor would be interested in determining the company’s financial risk. An income statement is a summary of performance as reflected in its profitability (or lack thereof) of a company over a certain time. The income statement accounts all profits for a business during this given period (monthly, quarterly or annually), as well as the operating overhead cost for the business. This would assist a manager because he/she would be able to determine the operating performance of the business over a period of time. The investor would likely be looking at the same information as a manager, but using it to determine if the company is making money or losing money. Statement of cash flows describes the cash flow into and out of the business. Its specific emphasis is on the types of......

International Accounting Financial Reports

...Comparing Financial Reports Using the Form 20F Reconciliation Annie has been hired as an analyst for a relatively small investment company and has had several discussions with her new employer who is interested in expanding its investment options to include more international firms. One issue that Annie has brought up with her boss in their discussions is many investors’ unfamiliarity with financial reports prepared based on accounting standards other than US GAAP. While Annie’s employer seems to appreciate her concerns, Annie has asked you to help her prepare a report for her boss to examine and to use when he needs to explain the issues to the company’s clients. Annie has already located a number of popular press items that she will use to gain a general sense of where US GAAP and IFRS differ. However, she is concerned that she will need more direct information to provide to her employer in order to help him understand the issues at hand. She has examined a number of companies that report using IFRS, but is not sure how to use those reports to help her illustrate her concerns. She has asked you to help her prepare some information that she might use to help her boss better understand the impact on financial reports of using IFRS versus US GAAP. Given the importance of various ratios in financial ratios, you have decided to calculate several commonly used financial ratios using values taken from a company that prepares it financial reports using US GAAP and......

The company’s debt ratio of 0.55:1 is optimal, and as a solvency ratio, this debt ratio analysis indicates that the company has sufficient leverage to survive over a long period of time. Due to these positive indications of the ratios, I would purchase shares in Blackmores, on the basis of increasing capital growth. (d) Blackmore’s sustainability report should report the four following categories of corporate social responsibility (CSR): 1. Physical resources and environmental contributions- conservation initiatives that prevent or hinder environmental degradation 2. Energy- minimising unsustainable energy consumption (e.g. fossil fuels) and waste materials 4. Community involvement- initiatives conducted for the benefit of the general public. E.g. grants/ donations. (e) The sustainability report disclosed that Blackmores conducted activities that complied to each of the CSR criteria in (d). For criteria 1-3 (question d), the CSR initiatives of Blackmore were indicated on page 22.
