NEW YORKER IN TONDO SCRIPT
Kikay - A girl who goes to New York and falls in love with it. She acquires all the New Yorkers' things - style, looks, language and manners.
Mrs. Mendoza / Aling Atang, mother of Kikay, has been carried away by her daughter's way of living. She tries to converse with everybody in broken English.
Tony, sweetheart of Kikay, decides to visit and catch things up with his friend. He is a simple guy who got secretly engaged with their other childhood friend, Nena.
Nena is a tomboyish type of girl. On her visit in Kikay's house, she finds her friend different and weird. She gets irritated.
Totoy, the Tondo "canto boy" is their other friend who is funny and has a secret love for Nena which has only been revealed when the two females had a clash.

Scene 1:
*doorbell rings*
Mrs. M: (Gets up from seat) Visitors, always visitors, nothing but visitors all day long. I'm beginning to feel like a society matron. (opens door)
Mrs. M: Tony! I thought you were on the province.
Tony: Is that you Aling Atang?
Mrs. M: of course it's me, foolish boy. Why?
Tony: You don't look like Aling Atang.Mrs. M: I had a haircut. Think it's horrible?
Tony: Oh, no, no. You look just wonderful. Aling Atang for a moment, I thought you were Kikay.
Mrs. M: Oh, you are so palikero as ever, Tony. But come in. Here, sit down.
(Tony takes a seat) How is your mother? (Hands him a glass of juice from the table)
Tony: Thank you. Oh, my poor mother. She's homesick for Tondo. (Sips juice) She wants to come back here at once. Hey, this is pretty good.
Mrs. M: Thank you. How long have you been away? (Tony drinks more juice)
Tony: Only 3 months.
Mrs. M: Three months!!! It's too long for a Tondo native to be away from Tondo. My poor kumare. She must be bored to death out there. (Tony drinks more juice)
Tony: Well, you know, we engineers are always on call. But as…...

...Disease in the News West Nile Virus Disease in the News – West Nile Virus The West Nile virus made its deadly debut in New York City September 27, 1999. The virus had never been seen in the Western Hemisphere of the United States. It is said to be usually found in Africa and Europe. When it made its debut, it was first believed to have been the St. Louis encephalitis. Experts at the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have confirmed the virus to be West Nile. Nearly twice as many people in the New York region have been stricken by the mosquito borne illness as earlier recognized (Fish, 1999). The outbreak of the West Nile had New Yorkers shocked that a mosquito bite could be so deadly. During the time of the outbreak, there were 37 confirmed cases of the West Nile virus in New Yorkers. Twenty-five of these New Yorkers were from New York City, eight from Westchester County, and four from Nassau County. Although there are confirmed cases, 162 cases were still under investigation and eight deaths had doctors still studying the tissue and blood of the victims (Albany Times Union, 1999). There are 70 types of mosquitoes living in New York, but only 30 of them carry the virus. The West Nile virus outbreak stemmed from prolonged drought, which produced a large supply of the northern house mosquito, Culex pipiens. The Culex pipiens lives near people but generally feeds on birds. This particular mosquito is efficient at transmitting certain......

...In The News - Amazon Signs $600M Cloud Infrastructure Deal With CIA At first glance, when I saw this article, I was more curious than anything, and had no thought of how this piece of news could be blended into the BUSN-412 discussion thread. However, after reading through the article, it became apparent to me that Amazon’s deal with the CIA was still a business transaction, albeit with the Federal Government. My thoughts began to race as I pondered how this would be different from any other business decision reached by such an enormous company like Amazon. After all, they are a multi-billion-dollar company, who are in business to make money. In an article published by CRN, a very reliable technology news organization, unconfirmed reports state that Amazon has reached a 10-year, $600 million cloud computing deal with Amazon. Amazon, if confirmed, and already a major player in the building of Cloud Infrastructure, will have scored a very large victory in the tech world. With such a sizeable deal in the works, one could speculate about some of what went on behind closed doors. As it may relate to our week two discussion thread on SWOT, I would speculate that the CIA did its own SWOT analysis of Amazon. I am sure that the CIA would not have even considered Amazon for this venture, before scrutinizing Amazon from top to bottom. For the business managers that were involved in this process, it should have been the standard way to conduct business, save for the fact it was......

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, visiting Berlin, urged the German government to do more to boost lackluster domestic demand, which the U.S. and others argue is partly to blame for the anemic economic growth in the euro zone as a whole. Do Tax Cheats Solve the U.K.’s Productivity Puzzle? URL:http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2013/10/22/do-tax-cheats-solve-the-u-k-s-productivity-puzzle/?KEYWORDS=productivity abstract: Economists in Britain have long been scratching their heads over the nation’s troubling “productivity puzzle.” Now Markit, the financial information provider that publishes the purchasing managers’ indexes used to gauge activity in the global economy, has tentatively suggested that former tax cheats might be muddying the waters. Britain has a bigger workforce than it did before it tipped into recession in 2008 yet is producing far fewer goods and services. This mismatch between output and jobs has led to a collapse in productivity, a measure of how effectively an economy uses its resources that’s an important driver of future growth prospects. ...Business Policy 3/15/14 The article that I chose to talk about is about Apple and Samsung; they have both been competing to be number one in the market for phones, TVs, and now watches and new advances in technology. Apple has a huge a range of customers who are very loyal to them and that are what had made them so successful in expanding their business. Samsung is also very successful because of the advances that they have been making with Android and the new Tizen strategy. Tizen is a new form of technology that allows manufactures to turn phones in watches and other everyday items. Tizen and Android are very similar and most people cannot tell them apart if the systems are switched. Apple has a huge disadvantage with Samsung because they do not move as fast as Samsung. Samsung’s disadvantage is that China can easily make knockoffs of the brand and sell them for as low as $35 compared to $700. * Samsung’s marketing strategy is to cover everything that they can internationally, spending 4 billion dollars. * Apple’s business strategy is to keep its loyal customers happy with the products that they currently own. * Samsung’s business strategy is to keep the customers that they have while trying to gain new customers. * Samsung and Apple’s main challenges are environmental because people care about what their phones can do. Which means applications like Facebook, Instagram, and Candy crush? * Another area that they are competing in is the tablet market,......

...News and Current Affairs Programme 1 ITN National and World News This programme is a national type and is broadcast right across the British Isles on a daily basis. It is not a specialist programme in the sense that it does not focus on one particular genre of news.eg sport, instead it covers every area and delivers it in a formal manner. The particular programme that I have taken notes on appeared on our screens and was broadcast on 10/10/10 at 6:00pm. It was presented by Alastair Stewart and Mary Nightingale and the headlines of each individual story were read out in the studio. This was then followed by images and graphics appearing on screen as the voice-overs of the news presenters could clearly be heard explaining the story. The first story that was covered was about how the Vitamin B could potentially benefit people that suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The first part of this story used graphics on the screen as well as the use of voice-overs to narrate what the diagrams and statistics on screen meant. The story then progressed into interviews with experts on the matter, all of a medical background and with extensive knowledge in Alzheimer’s disease and also the Vitamin B. These interviews were taken in medical rooms with clear equipment and charts visible on camera the whole time to reiterate the issue. Finally the story was concluded with footage of old age pensioners who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and a summary voice over being made on......

...The company “Nutiva” did a re-branding campaign the beginning of 2014 for its product line with new labels. Nutiva is the world’s leading brand of all-organic hemp foods, coconut oil, red palm oil and chia seeds. Their logo is: “Nourishing People and Planets. Revolutionizing the way the world eats”. They are a values-driven brand, dedicated to providing nourishing food and supplements. The beginning of this year, they launched a clean simple new look to the labels of their products which hadn’t had a packaging change in 15 years. Their inspiration for the change was to look as fresh, healthy and vital on the outside of the package as what they have inside. The labels are simple, clean, modern looking white background with watercolor inspired designs of the plant product that is inside. The website article found at Nutiva.com was my choice for this assignment. This re-branding idea is very important in successful advertising to help rejuvenate a product. Nutiva’s original labels were very every day common blending in with its competition. The fresh look will attract new consumers that may be buying other similar products. Media campaigns with the new look that were launched by Nutiva are part of the marketing mix to help this product sell. The internet marketing and advertising Nutiva has done with the “new” look are the campaign mix that the DeVry course in “Advertising and Public Relations” is teaching. Nutiva wants to keep its brand image consistent and also have it......

Avoid News

...Avoid News Towards a Healthy News Diet By Rolf Dobelli Prologue This article is the antidote to news. It is long, and you probably won’t be able to skim it. Thanks to heavy news consumption, many people have lost the reading habit and struggle to absorb more than four pages straight. This article will show you how to get out of this trap – if you are not already too deeply in it. of what we are designed to handle. This leads to great risk and to inappropriate, outright dangerous behavior. In the past few decades, the fortunate among us have recognized the hazards of living with an overabundance of food (obesity, diabetes) and have started to shift our diets. But most of us do not yet understand that news is to the mind what sugar is to the body. News is easy to digest. The media feeds us small bites of trivial matter, tidbits that don’t really concern our lives and don’t require thinking. That’s why we experience almost no saturation. Unlike reading books and long, deep magazine articles (which requires thinking), we can swallow limitless quantities of news flashes, like bright-colored candies for the mind. Today, we have reached the same point in relation to information overload that we faced 20 years ago in regard to food intake. We are beginning to recognize how toxic news can be and we are learning to take the first steps toward an information diet. This is my attempt to clarify the toxic dangers of news – and to recommend some ways to deal with it. I have now gone......

New York

...Ronald Blaylock Writing II, Fall 2012 Rodgers Classification Paragraph The Yankee Fan New York is known as the place full of excitement and is also the home to the city that never sleeps. A city that offers much excitement in this state is The Bronx which is not that far from New York City. The Bronx is best known as the home of the New York Yankees and New Yankee Stadium. Although New York is known for many of their sports teams, this is the team almost everyone in New York supports having the colors navy blue and white pumping through their veins. Baseball in New York is almost a year round sport for this state because either the Yankees or the New York Mets make it to the postseason, so someone is always playing. When you first enter New Yankee Stadium or any ballpark you realize all the fans pouring in with food and cold drinks, as they walk to their seats to prepare for the ball game. At the ballgame there you will find the different types of fans: the ones who are just there for the fun, the Bandwagons and the Diehard fans. From the first Sunday of April, which is the opening of the regular season, to the first Sunday of October, the ending of the regular season, you will be able to point out every fan. The fans that are just for fun goes to the games for the food, the promotions that may be going on, the giveaways fans receive at the door, the championship game or the ceremony. This fan is not a serious fan of the game, but is just looking for a good time with......

...In the News Apple has revealed a new promotional material that lets its users have the ability to switch between major mobile carriers for their data plans. Apple will now ship out in their new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 a built-in sim card that allows users to purchase wireless service on the spot. Previous ipads have always had the ability to let you hop between carriers just by swapping out the sim card; however, Apple has simplified this process further with one sim card that lets you hop onto whichever carriers is listed on their iOS. These carriers include AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S., and EE in the U.K. Apple does plan to expand the list of global carriers in the future. Why does this matter? Well I think this really takes the carriers out of the retail loop and makes it easier for Apple users to be able to switch seamlessly between the three major U.S. carriers for on the go data plans. It makes the carriers a lot closer to the interchangeable pipes that they’re afraid of seeing because it effectively lessens the powers of the mobile carriers since they rely on their control of the retail sales and service channels to prevent customers from switchovers and to be able to upsell additional products. Interestingly enough, Verizon has opted out of this new Apple sim so far, which shows the disproportionate strength of Verizon in our market as compared to the other three carriers. Verizon thinks that they have enough market power to tell Apple what to......

...News The News is a wonderful and scary thing at the same time. I personally steer clear of the news as it tends to blow matters way out of proportions and with being in the military I rather be briefed on things of national security by my superiors vice the local news that only gets pebbles from the locals. I think that the news can be good at times, but in my experiences it tends to stress society out way more than it needs to be. An example of this is I have been to Bahrain numerous times, and all my mother would see on the television is riots and unruly behavior there. I on the other hand did not watch the news, got the security brief from my superiors and carried on my mission. While I was there it was nothing as what my mother and the news had depicted. Every time I have been there it has been peaceful and the locals have always been so very nice. Audience The intended audience was originally for locals, as it was broadcasted on the local news channels. The written news article I chose was from New York Times. Since the incident occurred in Phoenix, AZ, I purposefully chose the New York Times as it is located across the country. This choice makes for a better comparison of data from across state lines. Credible MSNBC and the New York Times are both credible sources that individuals rely on everyday to hear anything from the weather to local in international news. Both of these reports were similar in nature. The New York Times tends to go more in depth, so their...

From the New Yorker

...from The New Yorker January 8, 2007 DEPT. OF PUBLIC POLICY The Formula Enron, intelligence, and the perils of too much information. by Malcolm Gladwell 1. On the afternoon of October 23, 2006, Jeffrey Skilling sat at a table at the front of a federal courtroom in Houston, Texas. He was wearing a navy-blue suit and a tie. He was fifty-two years old, but looked older. Huddled around him were eight lawyers from his defense team. Outside, television-satellite trucks were parked up and down the block. "We are here this afternoon," Judge Simeon Lake began, "for sentencing in United States of America versus Jeffrey K. Skilling, Criminal No. H-04-25." He addressed the defendant directly: "Mr. Skilling, you may now make a statement and present any information in mitigation." Skilling stood up. Enron, the company he had built into an energy-trading leviathan, had collapsed into bankruptcy almost exactly five years before. In May, he had been convicted by a jury of fraud. Under a settlement agreement, almost everything he owned had been turned over to a fund to compensate former shareholders. He spoke haltingly, stopping in mid-sentence. "In terms of remorse, Your Honor, I can't imagine more remorse," he said. He had "friends who have died, good men." He was innocent—"innocent of every one of these charges." He spoke for two or three minutes and sat down. Judge Lake called on Anne Beliveaux, who worked as......

...A news article discusses current or recent news of either general interest (i.e. daily newspapers) or of a specific topic (i.e. political or trade news magazines, club newsletters, or technology news websites). A news article can include accounts of eyewitnesses to the happening event. It can contain photographs, accounts, statistics, graphs, recollections, interviews, polls, debates on the topic, etc. Headlines can be used to focus the reader’s attention on a particular (or main) part of the article. The writer can also give facts and detailed information following answers to general questions like who, what, when, where, why and how. Quoted references can also be helpful. References to people can also be made through the written accounts of interviews and debates confirming the factuality of the writer’s information and the reliability of his source. The writer can use redirection to ensure that the reader keeps reading the article and to draw her attention to other articles. For example, phrases like "Continued on page 3” redirect the reader to a page where the article is continued. While a good conclusion is an important ingredient for newspaper articles, the immediacy of a deadline environment means that copy editing often takes the form of deleting everything past an arbitrary point in the story corresponding to the dictates of available space on a page. Therefore, newspaper reporters are trained to write in inverted pyramid style, with all the most important......

New Jersey

...smells, there are beaches… North Jersey is dirty and South Jersey is for rich people” another common reaction was “New York wannabe” and “Pennsylvanians garbage goes there”. I don’t quite understand why people have this opinion, but I certainly do not agree with it on any level. A major consensus remains that Jersey should be taken off the map! But why? To me all this prejudice toward Jersey never seemed to make any sense. Just as Jon Bon Jovi, Whitney Huston, Frank Sinatra, and Bruce Springsteen do, I call the beautiful state of New Jersey home. I’m sure Frank, Bruce, Jon and Whitney don’t appreciate the bad reputation that Jersey gets for what ever the reason may be either. Some interesting trivia information: The Statue of Liberty actually is placed on New Jersey territory. So take that New Yorkers! All those pins and “I love NY” shirts with Lady Liberty on them are all wrong. “I love NJ” that’s right I said it, I DO LOVE NJ. Some people believe that New Jersey has a lot of malls, if this is true they are no where near my town, to get to the nearest mall you must drive at least 45 minutes. New Jersey has a reputation for its beaches, and I'm not going to argue that, who doesn't like beaches and board walks? Atlantic City has the longest board walk in the world. The first baseball game was played in Hoboken NJ, and the first Indian Reservation was in New Jersey. So again why the bad rep for Jersey? Let me tell you more about my town, I live in a town called......
