Negative effects of the Internet Julia Tucker

Today’s teenagers use technology more than ever. Most of them have Internet access, which they use to send and receive email, instant messages, live chat, and more. Rarely do they stop to think about how harmful the Internet can be, such as exposure to pornography, identity theft, or cyber-bullying. Not only are they exposed to certain things but also the Internet affects a teenager’s social life, mental health and physical health.
Over usage of the Internet can quickly lead to internet addiction, which will ultimately give them less time for them to study, do homework, read, exercise, or participate in any co curriculum activities. As a result, internet addiction directly affected their day to day’s lifestyle and characteristic whom some are suppose to be inside the classroom yet they are wasting time surfing the Internet, watching pornography, or playing online games in the cyber world.
Today, due to popularity of social networking sites, teenagers are encouraged to post their profile on them because they want to be accepted by their peers. With putting up their profile, it helps them to meet and make friends with strangers. In turn, the stranger may be a predator who expose the teen to child pornography and encourage the teens to exchange pornography. In some cases the predator wants to go as far as to meet up with the teen.
All this heavy use of Internet by teenagers can greatly affect their mental health. Some teens might attempt to use the Internet as a way to escape from the real world or avoid personal contact. As a result, the more time they spent using the Internet, the less likely was their desire to see and talk to with family members and friends. Teenagers who grow up interacting online may find it harder to make friends in the real world and they became aloof, withdrawn and depressed. According to Staples, again, teenagers can actually “… lose friends, and experience symptoms of loneliness and depression, after joining discussion groups and other activities” and this causes teens to become emotionally empty and frustrated.
One of the most obvious problems with young generation using the Internet is the chance of getting addicted. Children and young adolescents that have grown up using computers will naturally be more vulnerable to getting hooked on the Internet. As a matter of fact, the young generation is spending more and more time in front of the monitor surfing Internet than they are getting their daily exercise. Because of this many medical problems such as obesity, eye health and postural problems can occur and affect the children’s health and social life. Such a pattern will eventually affect their grades, health, and social life. Moreover, Internet addiction disrupts teenagers’ relationships with family and friends and tends to replace education and other positive activities.
While the Internet opens a world of possibilities for the young generation, expanding their horizons and exposing them to different cultures and ways of life, they can be exposed to many dangers as they explore it.

Television impacts a child on how much television they watch, their age, personality, and if they watch television with or without their parents. The idea is that children get influenced in what their watching, so if they are watching a negative show; it is most likely that they will have an aggressive behaviour.  However, many people including children and teens are influenced by television which has many negative effects.  Television has negative effects on children because it promotes violence among children, has negative effects on healthy child development, and exposes children to sexual content.           Hundreds of studies have shown that how violent shows on television effects children and teens. Medias Negative Effect on Politics

...Political Science 201 June 7, 2012 Media’s Negative Effect in Politics The media plays a heavy negative role in American politics. During the past few years, society’s judgment has been based on what was given to it through the media. People rarely specifically research on candidates or propositions anymore. Much of the mass media is biased by trying to persuade viewers into believing what they want them to believe are true. Media is created for consumption by a large number of people watching it. The media has a remarkable impact on politics, which is not always good or beneficial. The data collected from the media can either be used for or against a politician. If a politician is favored by a certain network, such as CNN, NBC, or FOX, then the network can help his or her career reach new heights; however, if a politician is disliked then the network is capable of destroying the politician’s career. The media has the desire to make decisions for itself and in return try to convince people of its rightness and distort its viewers’ perspectives. There are many different types of media that can have a different influence on society’s political view. The four biggest forms of media are radio stations, newspapers, the internet, and television. People could tune into radio stations or talk radios to listen to political candidates being interviewed. An example would be in 1992 when "President George H. Bush interviewed with conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh" (Curl).......

Effects of Internet

...“The Internet is the world's largest library. It's just that all the books are on the floor”. This is a personal reflection on the impact of Internet technologies on higher education around the world over the last 13 years. It chronicles my observations of differences between perceptions and realities, of enthusiasm and disappointment, and the changes that have taken place in learning, teaching, and the structure of higher education during this period. Based on the work of others, this reflection also includes a prediction of the near term introduction of new instructional technologies and draws implications for higher education from these predictions and this history. The Context of Learning, always takes place in both a general context (language, country, geographical location) and a context created specifically for the learning process (classroom, technological infrastructure, course design). When learning materials cross national, language, and cultural borders, the issue of context becomes even clearer. Now, there is the increasing realization that materials produced in one country (or even hemisphere) must undergo extensive “localization” (and/or translation) in order to be useful. Perhaps no other influence has so affected the face of higher education than the World Wide Web. Nearly every aspect of learning that was once thought to be set in concrete, no longer is. The typical student no longer has to be white, between the ages 18-22, and want to be a doctor. ......

Negative Effects of Social Media

...Negative Effects of Social Media Although created to allow people to keep in contact, social media is a ticking time bomb that has adverse effects. The negative effects from social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, range from misinformation to arguments and depression. There is nothing that goes unsaid when it comes to online communication. Numerous hot topics are hit every single day leading to resentment, hate and the ending of friendships. False Information The commonality of false information on social media is unreal. Every day I skim through my Facebook feed, I see the most ridiculous things being shared by my friends that are assumed to be true. I can’t help but to subconsciously look down on people who share such things. Users of social media are much too quick to share information without first verifying their sources. It is 2014 and in this day and age, we are only as smart as our ability to use the internet correctly. Establishing the validity of everything shared is something that should be done more often, yet is rarely done at all. There are countless bogus websites, such as The Onion, who post ridiculous articles that prey on the emotions from recent events. Current, trending topics are Robin Williams’ suicide and the case of Michael Brown. People are getting extremely worked up reading false articles that lead to their misguided opinions on topics that aren’t even real. It’s no secret that when emotions and social media mix, fire is ignited. ...

Negative Effects of Friendship

...Negative effects of Friendship Speech Though there are many positive aspects of friendship there are several potential negative effects of having friendships that are not 100% genuine. The first and perhaps most obvious negative effect of friendship is the risk of having ‘false’ or ‘bad’ friends. There are several signs of a potential bad friend including: belittling your accomplishments, ignoring you and unhealthy competition between you and your friend. There are 6 types of ‘bad friend’: the promise- breaker, the double-crosser, the self-absorbed, the discloser, the competitor and the fault finder. Having any one of these types of friends in your life can have a strong negative impact. The second effect of having a bad friendship is the potential for peer pressure to occur. Peer pressure is caused by the social desire to fit in and be accepted by peers, that forces a person to change their personal habits and personality. The effect of this pressure, in turn, can cause a group mentality. Which then continues the cycle. What causes this pressure is the desire to define normalcy. This may have the effect of your friends pressuring you into actions that you would not normally engage in. These activities can range from trivial things like: a change of hairstyle to more dangerous acts like: drug use. Examples of activities that the influencing peer pressure party may want you to involve yourself in include: * Encouraging you to gossip about your other friends * To......

Defined as “a feeling of sudden and strong displeasure and antagonism directed against the cause of an assumed wrong or injury”, anger is oftentimes overpowering that people cannot hold it resulting into a bigger problem (Jones, 2004). As a person grows older and is expose in a different scenario, feeling angry becomes a potential destruction for him. The Negative Effects of Social Media

...The Negative Effects of Social Media Christine M. Boyd University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Social media is something that has become a part of the lives of millions. Every day we see people constantly posting on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Some think that these media outlets unite people together, but I’m beginning to think the contrary is closer to the truth. It’s common to see multiple people in a room glued to their phones instead of actually engaging with each other. In this paper, I will investigate why people have developed an obsession with social media, how social media creates a false reality, and how social media can be harmful to our mental health. There are a variety of reasons why people have developed an obsession with social media, making it harder to cut ties with it. According to the article Technology Addiction in Adolescents by Vivek Agarwal and Sujit Kumar Kar, “Companies making mobile phones, made them compatible for other technologies like – games, videos, internet browsing and many other applications which facilitate their wide circulation and making them more addicting objects” (pg. 171). When people have constant internet access through their smart phones, it makes it extremely difficult to avoid social media. Smart phones usually vibrate or make a noise when you get a Facebook or Twitter notification, which can increase your likelihood of checking the application. Along with constant internet access, excessive social media use has been......

Negative Effects of Television

...Negative Effects of Television Television is the most famous media communication in the world. Almost all people use television with many kinds of purposes such as entertainment. In addition, television brings a good side for children to gain various knowledge outside of school. However, some parents claim that television brings many negative effects toward their children. Based on my experience, I agree with that statement. First of all, television can make a big wall among family member relationships. For instance, when children are addicted to watching television, they will feel lazy to do anything such as eating, sleeping, etc. Even when one of the family members tries to make a conversation, they will answer back as simple as possible. Thus, this kind of attitude would cause a bad effect to relationships among family members. Secondly; now days, there are many action movies shown either via theaters or vie television. Even though it is much fun, but secretly, it makes a new shape of attitude for children. For example, if children often watching action movies, in the future, their responses for everything will be full of rude moves. Therefore, it is hard for children to make a good relationship around them. Lastly, every scene of movie might give a bad influence to children. For example, there is a movie which tells the audience about an alcoholic’s life. In that case, it is possible for children to drink alcohol at such a young age. In......

Negative Effect of Video Games

...THE NEGATIVE EFFECT OF VIDEO GAMES ON CHILDREN Marcos V. Jimenez Comp 172 July 17,2012 Monte Gast THE NEGATIVE EFFECT OF VIDEO GAMES ON CHILDREN The introduction and advancement of technology has provided us with many valuable tools and resources; however, it also has the capability of negatively influencing our younger generations. It is our responsibility as parents to provide them with guidance and direction in choosing the correct technological learning tools, and managing the amount of time spent in front of video games. Although video games offer a broad array of opportunities for teaching and learning, there are equally as many games focused on violence and inappropriate behaviors. Children are easily influenced in today's society through what they see and hear, making video games a prime resource for how they are influenced. VIOLENCE Many of today's video games, especially suitable for young boys, focus their attention on violent acts, and whether it be through weapons, verbal abuse, or fighting. Young minds are easily molded through the violence in these games, leading them to believe that weapons and fighting are standard in today's society. In order to instill the most positive values in these young boys, parental guidance is necessary in controlling the video games to which children are exposed. Helping them to distinguish between reality and video games is a key responsibility of parents and guardians. INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR Most often going hand......
