Social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace allow you to find and connect with just about anyone, from a coworker in a neighboring cube to the girl who played Emily in your high school production of "Our Town" thirty years ago. Browsing these sites can make you feel connected to a larger community, but such easy, casual connection in an electronic environment can also have its downside.

A False Sense of Connection
According to Cornell University's Steven Strogatz, social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. By focusing so much of our time and psychic energy on these less meaningful relationships, our most important connections, he fears, will weaken.

Cyber-bullying
The immediacy provided by social media is available to predators as well as friends. Kids especially are vulnerable to the practice of cyber-bullying in which the perpetrators, anonymously or even posing as people their victims trust, terrorize individuals in front of their peers. The devastation of these online attacks can leave deep mental scars. In several well-publicized cases, victims have even been driven to suicide. The anonymity afforded online can bring out dark impulses that might otherwise be suppressed. Cyber-bullying has spread widely among youth, with 42% reporting that they have been victims, according to a 2010 CBS News report.

Decreased Productivity
While many businesses use social networking sites to find and communicate with clients, the sites can also prove a great distraction to employees who may show more interest in what their friends are posting than in their work tasks. Wired.com posted two studies which demonstrated damage to productivity caused by social networking: Nucleus Research reported that Facebook…...

Economic Effect of Social Media

...Executive Summary Social media, online social networking service, has been existed for a long time. In that time, people use social media as an effective way to expand our social circle. People who use these sites form a social network, which provides a very strong and powerful way to connect, share interests, and keep in touch with others across the miles. However, as “the valuation of Facebook raised in a significant way, settling at figures in excess of $80 billion just after the company’s developer conference in September, 2011” (O'Dell, 2011). This valuation of the social media is only ranked second to Google’s. Even an obtuse CEO can realize the important impact on the business industry that social media will bring. Such a high valuation is not only because Facebook provides more than 600 million users a platform to communicate with each other, both in their leisure time and at work. Therefore, it is obvious to observe the social media’s economic impact. The economic impacts of the social media are increased work opportunities, decreased business cost, positive push in consumers’ purchasing behavior, increased opportunities for small businesses, and increased employees’ productivity. However, one thing should be noted that there may some different economic impacts in different countries because each country has their own cultures, economies, and business structures. Introduction of Social Media Social media, online social networking service, is among the most......

Medias Negative Effect on Politics

...Political Science 201 June 7, 2012 Media’s Negative Effect in Politics The media plays a heavy negative role in American politics. During the past few years, society’s judgment has been based on what was given to it through the media. People rarely specifically research on candidates or propositions anymore. Much of the mass media is biased by trying to persuade viewers into believing what they want them to believe are true. Media is created for consumption by a large number of people watching it. The media has a remarkable impact on politics, which is not always good or beneficial. The data collected from the media can either be used for or against a politician. If a politician is favored by a certain network, such as CNN, NBC, or FOX, then the network can help his or her career reach new heights; however, if a politician is disliked then the network is capable of destroying the politician’s career. The media has the desire to make decisions for itself and in return try to convince people of its rightness and distort its viewers’ perspectives. There are many different types of media that can have a different influence on society’s political view. The four biggest forms of media are radio stations, newspapers, the internet, and television. People could tune into radio stations or talk radios to listen to political candidates being interviewed. An example would be in 1992 when "President George H. Bush interviewed with conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh" (Curl).......

The Positive and Negative Effects of Media on Consumers

...Alexander S Morillo SOC 122 Professional Orval Jewett May 11, 2013 The Positive and Negative Effects of Media on Consumers In some way, shape or form media and technology play a very important role in our lives. Before the digital age mainly newspapers and radios distributed media. In today’s day in age mass media is publicized either through multiple forms of technology such as the radio, television, computer, cell phones, and tablets. Although we may view these forms of media and technology as positive, negative repercussions also tend to arise. One negative repercussion for example is an over exposure to media which causes health problems due to unhealthy advertisement that “hypnotizes” consumers into buying goods and services which have negative impacts on their lives. Yet a positive effect is that the common man gets the latest news within a fraction of seconds. Media and technology provides society with information. This through nonfiction sources such as the news and also through fictional sources such as movies and books. Even though the latter are not factually true, they are informed by facts and provide interpretations and perspectives. Spreading information makes a better-informed society whose people make decisions based on more information. Social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, have removed all the communication and interaction barriers. People can now communicate his/her perception and thoughts over a variety of topics. Students and......

Negative Effects of Social Media

...Negative Effects of Social Media Although created to allow people to keep in contact, social media is a ticking time bomb that has adverse effects. The negative effects from social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, range from misinformation to arguments and depression. There is nothing that goes unsaid when it comes to online communication. Numerous hot topics are hit every single day leading to resentment, hate and the ending of friendships. False Information The commonality of false information on social media is unreal. Every day I skim through my Facebook feed, I see the most ridiculous things being shared by my friends that are assumed to be true. I can’t help but to subconsciously look down on people who share such things. Users of social media are much too quick to share information without first verifying their sources. It is 2014 and in this day and age, we are only as smart as our ability to use the internet correctly. Establishing the validity of everything shared is something that should be done more often, yet is rarely done at all. There are countless bogus websites, such as The Onion, who post ridiculous articles that prey on the emotions from recent events. Current, trending topics are Robin Williams’ suicide and the case of Michael Brown. People are getting extremely worked up reading false articles that lead to their misguided opinions on topics that aren’t even real. It’s no secret that when emotions and social media mix, fire is ignited. ...

Effect of Social Media

...Introduction Social media had been a massive part in every household. Technology had given us a great deal and helped us with our tasks and made everything easy. We know that social media sites like (Google+, Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo) had introduced us in many methods that can connect people easier. Social media sites had been a popular means to connect with other people over the Internet. During the 1980's home computers were becoming more common in every household and social media sites were becoming more refined. According to Hendricks, (2013) The Internet relay chats, or IRCs, were first used in 1988 and were popularized into the '90s. The first popular social media site, Six Degrees, was created in 1997. The site enabled its users to upload a profile and make friends with the other users. By 2006, Facebook and Twitter both became available to users throughout the world. These sites still remain as the most popular social network on the Internet. After the success of these social media sites, other sites like Tumbler, Spotify, Foursquare and Pinterest began appearing to fill specific social network niches. Furthermore, Hendricks (2013) emphasized that, "there are a tremendous variety of social networking sites, and many of them can be linked to allow cross posting. This creates an environment where users can reach the maximum number of people without sacrificing the intimacy of person-to-person communication. We can only speculate about what the future of social......

Negative Effects of the Social Media

...2015 Negative Effects of the Social Media Nowadays with the development of advanced technology, social media become more and more popular. There are about 2 billion social media users around the globe. By social media, people can share and receive updated information whenever and whatever they do. Many people are keen on the social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube because they can connect people with each other conveniently. However, these social media bring many potential dangers. In my opinion, social media do more harm than good. It is no doubt that social media provide people lots of conveniences. For example, if students encounter difficult questions in homework, they do not need to use telephones or mobile phones any longer. They just need to log in their Facebook and discuss the problems with friends. This method not only saves time but also saves a telephone charge. That's why social media are so popular that billions of people use them. Although the social media have benefits, they bring many harms. The problem that students are addicted to the social media is becoming more and more severe. For example, many students who have lots of friends in the Facebook spend much time on chatting with friends and ignore their studies. In addition, the flash games on Facebook are like drugs. The games make students addicted so that they can not concentrate on studying. Spending several hours is very common for them. Social media is also harmful to the social......

Negative Effects of Social Networking

...Negative Effects of Social Networking Shelly Miner Western Governors University WGU Student #000246417 Negative Effects of Social Networking Social Networking or Social Media Websites (Social Networking) allow users to quickly share information and create online connections with other users. Despite the benefits, social networking can negatively effect us socially and can lead to undeveloped social skills and social alienation. Our intimate relationships can be negatively effected because social networking users can quickly find and communicate discreetly with others which can potentially lead to infidelity. Information posted on social networking sites can also have negative effects on current or potential employment opportunities. Social networks are intended to share information with everyone; this lack of protection can increase security risks such as identity theft, cyberbullying and computer viruses. Although each of these social networking sites offers attractive incentives and overwhelming popularity, research indicates that social networking can actually be detrimental because it has negative effects on social skills, relationships, employment, and security. Since their creation, social networking are rapidly changing the way we communicate, discover and share information and has become a crucial part of not only our personal lives but our professional lives. Social networking can be seen almost everywhere we go from retail......

Negative Effects of Social Media to the Students

...The Student Journal for Media Literacy Education is published twice each year, and includes articles by undergraduate college students studying media literacy. Social Media Impact and Implications on Society By Nick Pernisco, SJMLE Editor In the past five years, social media websites have become ubiquitous, giving young people a new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world. This new form of communication depends on usercreated content, not mass produced messages coming from large media companies. But as with other media before it, social media's rise to prominence has experienced some very serious growing pains. Companies like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have struggled to balance an inviting interactive environment with the ultimate pursuit of profits. Thanks to these sites, our expectations of the web, as well as society, have changed. This issue of the Student Journal for Media Literacy Education aims to explore some of the issues related to social media, and a generation fully engaged in this interactive world. The main focus is popular social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube, and LinkedIn, but other social networking sites are explored as well. All articles in the Journal have been written by college students in Santa Monica College’s Reading The Media course in Spring 2010, under my supervision. The students selected from a list of topic related to current issues in social media. I reviewed all of the......

Negative Effects of Social Media on Society and Teens

...Negative Effects of Social Media on Society and Teens Tyler Clementi, 18 was a regular freshman who was passionate about playing the violin and was still very new to his gay identity. Instead of enjoying college life at Rutgers University, his first semester proved to be a disaster experiencing the tauntment of tweets and statuses from other students behind computer screens and key boards. Cyberbullying is not the only negative effect that social media has on teens and society but she shares the biggest impact. It can be used through so many ways especially through social networking sites. All media sites construct reality that has powerful, yet subtle implications. The media has the ability to influence how teens and society think, shop, dress, behave, judge people and feel about other individuals. Some of these influences cause social and health issues. Social networking is not safe enough to protect anyone that has access to the internet. Social media has become very superior to the daily lives of society that has negatively affected society because of its influences of cyberbullying, the judgement of others and the promotion of drug or alcohol. Social networking is a very common way for people of different groups, age and ethnic background to connect together. It can become more of a community online that is only on the internet. Social media sites are usally free to sign up and join with no cost to connect with others. The question may be how the companies of......

Negative Effect of Social Media

...Additional Mental Health ISOLATION The use of messaging and social media messages have become a common occurrence in today’s society. Interaction on a human level has become less frequent in a person’s day-to-day living arrangements. Because of social media websites, interaction with others has become effortless, and people have isolated themselves behind online identities. Direct communication has been eliminated and much of society has been reduced to using abbreviations that express their emotions. Examples of important aspects of communication that are falling by the wayside today include:  Basic verbal communication  Tone of voice  Facial expression  Body language Social media is removing these very human qualities of communication by eliminating the need to get out and socialize with others in person. Sleep Disturbances Evidence also suggests that social media overuse can contribute to sleep disturbances. Studies of Chinese and American children, published in the "Journal of Sleep" and the "Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics," found that computer use among adolescents was associated with later bed times, later waking times, less restful sleep and an overall decrease in sleep. The use of computers before bedtime has also raised concerns among sleep experts, including Phyllis Zee, a neuroscience professor at Northwestern University, that the light from screens is affecting circadian rhythms and......

The Effects of Social Media on Education

...Discuss, with the use of examples, two negative ways in which the social media has been affecting formal Standard English use in the Jamaica classroom and one methodology that a teacher of English might employ to combat these negative effects. The social media craze is one that affects most if not all persons today. Whether we are old, young, from different races or cultures, we have been exposed to these channels of interaction in some way. Not only that but we have a wide range of these Medias to select from. While some operate one or two accounts, there are those with multiple social media accounts for example Facebook, Twitter, Tagged, Viber, Whatsapp and so on. These types of media serve many different purposes including the replacement of traditional news forms, keeping in contact with friends and family members and to promote businesses and social events. The reality of it all, however, is that everything has both advantages and disadvantages. In this case we examine the negative effects of social media on the use of Standard English in the Jamaican Classroom. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to emphasize the extent to which the use of social media has contributed to the inappropriate use of the Standard Jamaican English and the poor expression in written language among our Jamaican students. Jamaica has been described as a bilingual society with the Jamaican Creole (JC) and Standard Jamaican English (SJE) being the major and minor languages. However the......

The Negative Effects of Social Media

...The Negative Effects of Social Media Christine M. Boyd University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Social media is something that has become a part of the lives of millions. Every day we see people constantly posting on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Some think that these media outlets unite people together, but I’m beginning to think the contrary is closer to the truth. It’s common to see multiple people in a room glued to their phones instead of actually engaging with each other. In this paper, I will investigate why people have developed an obsession with social media, how social media creates a false reality, and how social media can be harmful to our mental health. There are a variety of reasons why people have developed an obsession with social media, making it harder to cut ties with it. According to the article Technology Addiction in Adolescents by Vivek Agarwal and Sujit Kumar Kar, “Companies making mobile phones, made them compatible for other technologies like – games, videos, internet browsing and many other applications which facilitate their wide circulation and making them more addicting objects” (pg. 171). When people have constant internet access through their smart phones, it makes it extremely difficult to avoid social media. Smart phones usually vibrate or make a noise when you get a Facebook or Twitter notification, which can increase your likelihood of checking the application. Along with constant internet access, excessive social media use has been......
