The Army, Navy and Marine Corps were established in 1775 in concurrence with the American Revolution. The war department was established in 1789 and was the precursor to what is now the Department of Defense (DOD). One year later, in 1790 the Coast Guard was established. This was followed by the founding the department of the Navy in 1798. Native Guard Tretheway

...James Cameron Mr. Randolph Engl. 210 9/21/12 Tainted History in Natasha Tretheway’s Native Guard Passion, precision, and technique are all synonyms used to describe Natasha Tretheway’s Native Guard that take the reader through the heart of the south and the heart of the family. This essay will examine the contradictions of (African) American life, especially concerning themes of history and memory. “Southern History”, “Incident”, and “South” will demonstrate these contradictions of (African) American history and memory. Serving as a scribe, Tretheway writes these poems for those people history has muted and closed the veil on. Southern History, Incident, and South; poems from section two of her book, depict racism during slavery and the Civil War, which is a part of forgotten history in the eyes of “Americans.” These historic experiences have not been given the proper examination, discussion, or acknowledgement. Tretheway refuses to allow African American history to remain as footnotes and brings out the real “American” history in her collection of poems. Tretheway’s personal experience growing up as a mulatto in the South is seen in her poem “Southern History”. This poem shows that even after more than a hundred years after the Civil War, history is still tainted. History is imperfect and at times intentionally false as textbooks in this time period were used to misinform students; keeping them bound and restricted from the real history of America. As Tretheway’s...

Native Guard Essay

...Egstrand 1 Alyssa Egstrand Professor Sewell ENG: The Literary Experience 1331 28 September 2011 Investigating the Impact of History on Modern Society within Natasha Trethewey’s Native Guard Rooted in the shadows of history, Native Guard by Natasha Trethewey intertwines personal and historical accounts to scrutinize the impact of the past on the present. Trethewey’s Native Guard is divided into three sections, which chronicle her mother’s life and death, the erased history of the Louisiana Native Guard, and Trethewey’s childhood in Mississippi. These different stories amalgamate, and open a dialogue about the impact of history on today’s world. Throughout Native Guard Trethewey infuses emotion into these untold stories by including personal reflections regarding each event that transpired. The third and final section of the book though, is the most important component to the overall work; it details Trethewey’s connections to her memories of growing up in Mississippi. This section synthesizes each unique focus of Native Guard, and consequentially forms one united theme: the importance of remembering of the past—the recorded, the biased, and the erased—due to its impact on the future. The final poem, “South” of Natasha Trethewey’s Native Guard, specifically highlights this theme by utilizing extended metaphors, integrating of memories with historical details, and infusing irony to illustrate racial conflicts. Trethewey begins the poem “South” with an extended metaphor......

...Debra K. Godfrey National Security Agencies June 1, 2015 BIS/221 University of Phoenix Memorandum To: Mark Bentcover CC: Classmates of BIS/221 From: Debra K. Godfrey Date: 6/1/2015 Re: Surveillance by national security agencies Wiki leak is an organization that deals with journalistic activities involving the publishing of information considered secret with unknown sources. Recently documents came up known as the Snowden documents showing how staff working for wiki leaks have been victims of surveillance by both the United states as well as British national security agencies. This was a very serious document that show how agencies of the government go to the extents of tapping communication channels for those working at wiki leaks together with those who support it. It has been a very crucial aspect that puts into spotlight the ethics surrounding the whole situation. This surveillance is not backed by warrants and this makes it illegal for the agencies to perform such activities. It is a form of violation of privacy and it also violates people’s right to express themselves as well as do their activities at their own privacy. It creates a sense of being watched. Just think when you are under surveillance you are being watched, making it possible for people to get the following information: 1. Name 2. Birthdate 3. Social Security Number 4. Address 5. Personal Information 6. Banking Information Scary is it? The next time you are......

...23 `111 National initiatives promote anti-discriminatory practices through legal aspects that are in the form of: legislations, conventions, regulations, charters and codes of practice lay down by professionals in the respective field bodies. These aspects emphasize on the need to observe human rights, promote equality among all people and embrace diversity present among the people. In the organization this is further enforced through set up organizational policies and procedures that guide skilled employees on how to go about their jobs. To cover this question I choose to take on a few laws and regulations that clearly depict the task at hand. These are: Sex discrimination act1975, human rights act 1998, disability discrimination act 1995, race relation (amendment) act 2000 and the age discrimination act 2006.The sex discrimination act protects men and women against gender based bias or harassment in access to resources, employment, public facilities, goods and services. The national initiative ensures that all citizens are equal and not discriminated against hence are free to access resources ensuring that opportunities are up for grabs for everybody to use. This also ensures that gender is not used as a drawback to give certain job positions within organizations and companies. This is now evident as majority of job holders are from either gender this law also protects against harassment either sexually or getting bullied in the public facilities. Reluctant Security Guard

...The case of the “The Reluctant Security Guard” has failures on two main fronts. There is a clear conflict between the company’s policy and David’s security license requirements. David Tuff’s handling of the issue should have been documented via a formal complaint, which would have possibly supported future efforts on his part to bring such a blatant policy of disregard for the public’s safety to the conscience of the media and public. Concurrently, it would validate his interaction with the company in regards to this matter in that he pursued dialogue to review and rescind the policy to include the challenge this policy poses to following the procedures and guidance outlined in the security manual and the risk to him and possibly others. It would also buttress any claims he may make under the “Whistle Blowers Act.” In regards to The Blue Mountain Company’s policy on removing intoxicated or drug induced individuals to the periphery of their property, it demonstrated a selfish disregard for public safety. Such a policy should have been vetted through their legal department to include consultation with local authorities. This policy presents great risk not only to the public, but possibly to the security guard who may be cited, fired, or part of a legal action brought by a public citizen as a result of a serious event occurring as a result of removing people from the premises. Additional risks are cited below. This invocation also discharges interaction between......
