Life as a Male Asian Student

My name is Tao Zhèng, and I am a 19-year-old male attending school in America. I lived in Japan until I was 16, and then moved to America to attend an American university and expand my education. I tend to spend the majority of my days either at school or focusing on my studies at home. My parents are very strict and take my schooling very seriously. Typically, It’s my mom who pushes my academic success. Dad always says it would be her fault if I did not succeed so I do everything I can to not let her down. I don’t see my father much, maybe around three hours a day. But it’s okay because I know he’s working to provide our family with the best care and make us proud (Cohen 2011). (Question 1) When I wake up, I start out my morning with looking at my schoolwork and seeing what I need to do for the day and plan accordingly. My parents and family back home in Japan have high expectations for me and I want to do everything I can to impress them. I then attend all of my classes back to back because I’m taking twenty credit hours; my plan is to graduate this December. After I finish my classes, I head up to the library for three back to back Asian centered study groups. My friends and I help each other out a lot; I have found that we compliment each other well because we experience the same stereotypes and can help one another out (Kiley 2012). (Question 2) A common misconception of Asians is that we are complete nerds that have no life or time for anything but studies. Well that’s not true and very prejudice. I have a job just like a lot of other college students. My scholarship covers my schooling but I like to have spending money for myself. My parents say that I am an adult and should support myself.…...

There are students who face learning problems and it’s not their fault. In our education system we end up blaming that group of students who face difficulty in learning, but not understanding why it happens. For a school student, life is loaded with studies. It is not possible for each one of them to cope up with their studies. They often get nervous, frustrated and end up mugging their lessons which is very harmful. Teacher’s reaction shouldn’t vary from student to student; it should be equal for every student. Discrimination is very fatal for students. In colleges, the scenario is different. Here there are problems which are related to politics. One should avoid any kind of politics (that in college as it is fatal for any student. Frustration often appears in students especially when their course session reaches its end. A majority of them either go for further studies whereas, rest of the students search for jobs. Recession has caused huge dearth of jobs and naturally many students are unable to avail their desired jobs. Students who opt for further studies often get puzzled about which course to study and from which college. Because of the lack of......

Asian Americans in the Workplace

...Asian Americans in the Workplace An In-Depth Analysis of Korean Americans 11/19/2007   Table of Contents Introduction 3 History of Korean Immigration to the United States 4 Values and Customs 10 Demographical Profile 16 The ‘Bamboo Ceiling’: Barriers in the Workplace 22 A Personal Interview: A Different Side to the Story 26 Conclusion 27 References 28 Introduction The term “Asian American” has a rich history in the United States. It refers to a person of Asian ancestry who also obtains American citizenship. The term was originally used by the Census Bureau to clarify and distinguish the government’s equal opportunity programs and measurements. Also, the term “Asian American” was used by anti-war activists during the 1960s instead of using the “Oriental” which was perceived as more derogatory and demeaning. This phrase was finally popularized into mainstream academic usage in the 1970s, and is now the accepted term for government and academic research (Dacin and Hitt, 1997). Although this term allows for economists, sociologists, and statisticians to breakdown the different cultural groups found within the United States, one can delve much further into the evolution of the people we categorize as “Asian American.” In the following pages, we will attempt to explain our research findings on the evolution of one innergroup of Asian Americans within the United States, the Korean Americans. The issues raised will include: 1. An extensive overview......

Study Life of a Student at Univesity

... I’m so happy to be here to tell you about the first part of our group’s presentation: Study life of a student at university. My talk will be in three parts. First, I’d like to give you an overview of the difference between university and high school. Second, I’ll focus on the new study form. Finally, I’ll talk about new exam form. So, let’s start with the difference between university and high school. As you know, a classroom in high school is small and only enough for about 50 students. But at university, the classroom is larger, crowded, and not fixed. It can have more than 100 people and well-equipped. Moreover, the lecturers at university have the new teaching styles that are not similar to these of teacher in high school. For example, teacher often check our homework, remind us of our incomplete task, while lecturers may not do that. At university, we are supposed to do that self- consciously. Lecturers provide us helpfully with knowledge and the direction. It is the fact that, many freshmen aren’t used to this teaching styles so at first, the result of study is not good. But then, they find it more enjoyable. Furthermore, the regulation at university isn’t as compulsory as in high school. We have more freedom and responsibilities. It is up to us to go to class, manage our work. The benefit is that we can own our timetable, our study and our life. On the other hand, some students are lazy or tempted to other attraction such as: internet, game…Ok, let’s move on to the new...

Their defense attorney, a brilliant lawyer, successfully argues against the death penalty and both men are sent to prison for life. After about five years, one of the men is killed in a fight, but the other completes his college education while still in prison and teaches other convicts English. He also volunteers for medical experiments, allowing himself to be injected with malaria germs in order to test new drugs. A model prisoner, he causes no trouble throughout his entire prison term. After about 30 years, he is paroled, whereupon he goes to a different country and continues to teach English. Two years later he dies of natural causes. Should this man have been subjected to capital punishment? Why or why not Theories that will be applied: 1. Divine Command Theory 2. Virtue Ethics 3. Utilitarianism Capital punishment has been and will always be a widely debated topic. The biggest question that surrounds capital punishment would be is it morally right or is it morally wrong? There are many arguments for and against capital punishment. Is a capital punishment really a deterent as some would say? I will apply and test three theories to the case......

Life Changes of a Student

...The poem “Snapping Beans” by Lisa Parker is about a granddaughter who goes from a tradition southern life up to a north city life and fears telling her religious grandmother that she has changed. Through thoughts and emotions, Parker shows the fear the teenager faces when trying to tell her grandmother. Although the granddaughter doesn’t want the grandmother to know, the grandmother has a secret that is revealed at the end of the poem. The granddaughter is back home from her school up North which implies she is from the south. In the southern area many people based their life off of tradition. One of the traditional things that is shown in the poem is “snapping beans”. The grandmother and the granddaughter are snapping beans while sitting on “splintering slats of the porchswing”. The description of the seat signifies how old it is and how long they have been doing the tradition. While they are there the grandmother hummed “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. The song implies that the grandmother is a religious women and being religious tends to cause people to have certain beliefs and views on life. Life of a College Student

...The difference between highschool and college life is the incredible increase in free time. In high school, every day was a constant grind and I neverhad any free time. In college I have a surplus. Instead of classes six hours a day, they take up a mere three hours. I'm no longer forced to sit in the same building all day. This newfound time provides many luxuries that can easily be abused. I can be productive or goof off. Time management is the most difficult or stressful about college life. There were many times this semester when I had to write a paper and heard my friends were going to a party. That always happened on days that I'd had time to get work done but had wasted it instead. Then I couldn't go out. My biggest fear was how to adjust to this new freedom. I knew living on my own meant my parents were not going to be breathing down my neck to do my work. They were not going to have me home at a certain hour. I was in complete control. These two aspects of being on my own were very exciting but I wondered how I would do without myparents holding my hand. Once things got rolling I realized I would beall right as long as I stayed motivated. The best advice I could offer future freshman to make the adjustment process easier is to stay on top of things. Don't get so caught up in the social atmosphere of college that you get behind in your studies. Remember what you're there for. There is nothing worse than approaching the end of a semester and......

Minitab Analysis of Life for Males and Females

...Using the data provided we use Minitab to perform an analysis to determine the median grandparent life with a confidence interval of 95%. First we construct a distribution ID plot to compare four (4) distributions for visual analysis. The distributions selected are Weibull, Lognormal, Exponential, and 3-parameter Weibull. The results are shown in Figure 1. Figure 1. Distribution ID Plot The data shows that the distributions with the best fit are Weibull and the Lognormal. We choose to pursue further analysis on the Weibull distribution because the correlation coefficients are high for both the data for males and females with a value of 0.96. The Lognormal distribution shows a slightly weaker correlation with the data representing females with a value at 0.92. Further analysis included the generation of a distribution Overview plot. Using the Weibull distribution we get the following plots shown in Figure 2. The results show that females have a tighter probability distribution than the males. The females also have a steeper curve for rate of death as age increases. This is shown in the Survival Function and Hazard Function plots below. Figure 2. Distribution Overview Plot and Weibull Analysis  By conducting a parametric distribution analysis of the data we can fit a distribution to the data. We continue to use the Weibull distribution in this analysis. The resulting plot is shown in Figure 3. Figure 3. Probability Plot for Age using Weibull Distribution ...
