Assessment 1 – An exploration of the digital world

My research topic in relation to exploring the digital world is on Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer is developed from breast tissues. Various signs of breast cancer include a lump in the breast, nipple discharge, a red scaly patch on the skin, or even a change in the shape of the breast. There are various risk factors involved in developing breast cancer such as lacking in physical exercise, over consumption of alcohol, taking hormone replacement therapies during menopause and of course, major contributing factor is the gene inheritance.

I commenced my research on the above topic using the informational website Wikipedia. I have found Wikipedia has the most comprehensive amount of information on breast cancer. It has information on Signs and Symptoms of breast cancer and how it is detected. It consists of pictures of breast showing signs like red scaly patch on skin, inverted nipple which is also a sign of breast cancer and a lump on a breast which is the most common symptom in today’s world. There is also a mammographic picture of a normal breast and a breast with cancer. Wikipedia also has information on the life style, how excessive smoking and consumption of alcohol leads to breast cancer. I did not have the knowledge that being exposed to radiation or doing shift work could also lead to breast cancer until I read this information on Wikipedia. The site also consists of the processes of when cancer is diagnosed, all the procedures that are involved such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and recovery after treatment. It also explains on the Pathology side of the breast on how specimens are collected from patients like a core biopsy or a fine needle aspiration, how the specimens are tested and how the results are interpreted and the stages of cancer are…...

...HRM-587 Course Project Part 4: Communicating the Change Date: 2/17/13 Communicating the Change Introduction: Communication is generally known as the glue that holds organizations together. It is the way we share information, ideas, goals, directions, expectations, feelings, and emotions in the context of organized action. The change strategy for communicating the necessary changes made by Apple during the integration of iPod and iTunes business unit and the subsequent vision that kept the company flexible to remain competitive, is inherent in its ability to handle communication at all levels. The CEO’s vision provides clear direction for all the business units working together to meet shareholder expectations and at the same time provide value to their customers and employees. The organization works for the mission. Apple understands the importance of being continuously innovative with a vast and loyal army of Apple fanatics behind it to regularly come up with new products like iPad. (A) The communication plan grid is a separate document (B) ONE of the communication pieces: Debut a brand new product with a summary of the company's milestones “Apple followed its usual script for the new iPhone's coming-out party. Apple CEO Tim Cook, kicked off the festivities before an audience of reporters, bloggers, applications developers …” (MICHAEL LIEDTKE and PETER SVENSSON) The following script was created from a series of Apple’s communication strategy: We desire to......

...Communicating With and Without Language By Lawrence A Bradshaw II COM101 Carol Gray, M.S. At Grand Canyon University Over the course of three days, a lot can happen. Things to be done, things that get done, and everything else in between. During that time, a person’s mood can either be swayed or swing from one direction to the next. There are a lot of factors that can influence those changes. Among the company the person keeps, health, time of day, and even appetite can greatly set the tone for ones perceivable communications: verbal or otherwise. While examining the past weekend, I found myself to fall victim to those aforementioned clauses. Here, we will take a moment to dissect the changes and how they affected communication. Friday: I start my day at 6am. I had not been feeling well, but I continue on with the help of my painkillers. At work, I communicate with a variety of different people. Whether in my office, or on the telephone, there is a vast assortment of personalities to contend with. As the day winds on, I feel myself bogging down. As I walk back and forth between the printer and my desk, the non verbal cues begin to speak louder than my words. People begin to ask “are you ok?” and “you don’t look so good”. Even simple communications with others becomes taxing. It was like watching drink: it starts off slowly, but then time takes its toll. By the end of the day, my interactions with others were kept to a bare minimum. By that, I meant...

...COM10003 Learning and Communicating Online Assessment 3: Reflective essay This essay will discuss how my use of online information has grown from being merely a consumer, to now being able to critically evaluate online sources for credibility and suitability for use in academic work. My role in producing an online informational resource has been enhanced by both the readings, and the experience gained in the collaborative process involved in working as a team. This is my first experience at online collaboration and I will examine the challenges encountered using this medium of communication, how I dealt with them, the lessons learned, and what I would do differently during future collaborative work. Before this course, my experience with online sources of information had been limited to an observer status, and although I had read from a variety of sources online, and considered myself capable of sorting truth from fiction, I had never realised the extent to which information can and should be evaluated. A study conducted by Scholz-Crane 1998 (cited in Metzger, 2007, pp. 2080-2081) explains that a lax attitude toward proving the accuracy and credibility of websites is prevalent among college students. This information has encouraged me to be more critical in regard to information found on the web, and I now apply the criteria espoused by Tate, (2010, pp. 35-36) of checking for accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency and coverage. According to Treise et al (2003, cited......

Assessment 1 - Learning and Communicating Online

...There has been much debate in the media recently about whether or not to vaccinate your children. As a mother, it’s not something I ever gave much thought to, it was always just a part of the upbringing of my children that I would have them fully vaccinated, so I decided to do a little research on the pros and cons of childhood vaccinations. The first website that I chose to look at was Australian Vaccinaton-Skeptics Network www.avn.org,au This website has been up and running since 1994, and provides links to the latest news stories in regards to vaccinations, however, I found the latest news story they provided was from 30/01/2014. They are a membership run organisation who campaign for better research, better safety and support for people who have been negatively affected by vaccine use. I found that this site was aimed at being ‘pro-choice’. They gave information about making an informed choice when it came to vaccinations. They provided detailed information about a wide range of vaccinations, such as HPV, Influenza, Polio and Meningitis. www.avn.org/vaccination-information/ I also found that vaccinations are not compulsory in Australia, something that I was not aware of, and that you can have your doctor sign a ‘conscientious objection form’ in order to be exempt and still be entitled to government benefits and child care rebates. They also provide a wide range of external links in order to gain further information. They gave a list of government links, natural......

She also said that she loved playing in front of the fireplace wondering when Santa Claus was going to come down and how if the fireplace was lit with fire. In my next interview with my daughter Sy'Eeta, I asked her what is her favorite thing to do because, the other question would have confused her, and she is only five years old. Learning and Communicating Online Reflective Essay

...In this report, I will reflect on what I’ve learnt in the course ‘Learning and Communicating Online’ and in particular, I’ll discuss what I have learnt about finding, using and evaluating online sources for academic communication. I’ll also discuss how my ideas of using online sources of information have developed during the course and how the development of an informational resource has helped me understand how to evaluate the credibility of online sources in an academic environment. I will also reflect on the advantages and limitations of working collaboratively in an online community. Firstly, researching a topic through the use of different online resources including informational websites and social media platforms helped me understand not only ‘how I learn’ but also that you can learn different things from different resources. During the course I researched information on MyLink, Holden’s infotainment system. The online resources I used to help with my research included: YouTube, GM Holden website, Reddit, Wikipedia and CarAdvice.com.au. Researching through Wikipedia helped me learn about Piaget’s Constructivist Theory (Atherton, JS 2010) which suggests that when we learn, we build on prior knowledge which is called ‘Assimilation’ and when we change our perceptions or alter our pre-existing knowledge when we learn new information this is called ‘Accommodation.’ From learning this, I knew that I was learning through what Piaget called ‘Assimilation’ where I was able......

Communicating in the Workplace

...Communicating in the Workplace Catherine Leon University of Phoenix Business Communications and Critical Thinking BCOM/275 Anthony Stern September 12, 2011 Communicating in the Workplace Assignment 1.1: Communication Process Model Directions: Think of a misunderstanding you experienced when communicating with someone else at work, home, or school. Then fill in the blanks of the chart below. Misunderstanding #1 Who was the sender? Co-worker Who was the receiver? Myself What was the message? “Please order coveralls for a technician at the refinery using the protocol previously sent “(L. Metzger, personal communication, August 30, 2011) What channel was used to send the message? Email What was the misunderstanding that occurred? The protocol previously sent was instructions for ordering coverall for a regular refinery worker. Sender failed to state that this was a contractor and not a regular refinery worker. The protocol previously sent does not give instructions to order directly through the vendor as opposed to online ordering. Contractors require special patches on their coveralls that can only be obtained through the vendor directly. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? Had the sender specified this was a contractor and to “spot buy” directly from the vendor. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity? When communicating via email, make sure to include who, what, where, when, and why. What seemed to be the main...

Communicating Effectively

...What I have learned from the Communicating Effectively Module The main focus of the studies in this module was the Myers Briggs Type Indicators. These indicators describe the way in which different people think and approach the world. It tells us that each one of us has preferences from the four descriptors giving a possible 16 personality types, Extraverted/Introverted, Sensing/INtuitive, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving. After reading through descriptions of each type, I assessed myself as having an ISFJ type. However, when my results arrived from the MBTI Test completed online, my results were an ESTJ type. Upon reading into the characteristics I questioned whether I was really an extrovert as I have always thought of myself as shy and reserved. The traits of an extravert are those who are energised when they talk though tasks with others and prefer to act after doing so. They enjoy the company of others especially if discussions and projects are in an area of common interest. I originally chose the Feeling type as I consider myself a people person; however I also like to be objective and to look at things logically and debate the issues. After this further analysis, I decided the ESTJ type better described me. Since I have read about the different personality types, I feel it will help me with how to better communicate with work colleagues. When communicating with other extroverts, one should aim to do so face to face. If in groups allow interaction,......

...Reflective essay Learning & Communicating Online ASSESSMENT 1b Written Response Learning & Communicating Online -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Commencing my online studies this year and aiming to be a professional in the Marketing Industry, I have learnt that there are many skills and attributes I need to fulfil this role. In my search, one skill that appeared in all adverts for Marketing Professionals, was strong communication skills, verbal, written and computer. Being able to communicate in the Marketing industry is vital for my success as is, having strong analytical skills. As well as these requirements, the job advert that I discussed stated, that training would be provided in areas of advertising and promotions, all of which are skills I require in the Marketing Industry. ‘Social Intelligence, and Novel and Adapting Thinking’ (Institute for the Future, 2011) are also important skills to be considered. Having Social Intelligence allows us ‘to connect with others deeply and directly allowing us to gage their reactions’ whilst Novel and Adaptive Thinking encourage us to be ‘proficient at thinking and find solutions’, basically, thinking outside the box. Learning online has completely surpassed all my expectations in comparison to my previous methods of learning, one of which was an online course. My previous online learning......
