Summary

Well-known for his ability of reconstructing failing companies, Carlos Ghosn is a great leader in modern business. He restored the Nissan motor group from the brink of bankruptcy, achieving record profits in two years. He is the best model for transformation leadership, which could be a spotlight in our society today. Transformational leadership gives more attention to the charismatic and effective elements, concerned with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals (Northouse, 2013, p. 185). As many industries are becoming extremely competitive, the importance of effectively motivating subordinates is being emphasized. In addition, Ghosn’s transformational leadership demonstrates how leaders diagnose the cause of the problem and manage crisis. He is a successful businessman and a competent leader. A whole series of events brought him fame as a leader and demonstrate ideal leader’s roles in highly competitive society.

When he joined Michelin tire in France, he was only 25 years old. He experienced life as a staff and manager in a factory in his first business career. Throughout the period of being a factory manager, he learned the importance of ‘Field based management’ and ‘fulfillment’, which is about the reality of the shop floor and trust of the employees. Although this was just the beginning, his experience of management level has had a decisive effect on his overall leadership career so far. As a factory manager in Michelin, he learned to be open-minded and was content to listen to employees’ voices carefully, which is an essential qualification of great leaders. This…...

Capabilities of the Mind

...Capabilities of the Mind The ideology of life itself and self-discovery form under the influence of nameless sources that our minds may not yet comprehend. Alain de Botton, author of “On Habit” comes to a realization that not only he but the world have come to a conclusion that their universe seemed to be uninteresting and dull. Through the blurred vision of modern culture, as humans, what we perceive to be anything but the ordinary seems to bring about curiosity. By way of the attentions that allure the concentrations of individuals we force upon ourselves framed thinking and tolerate expectations. By Botton becoming introduced to Xavier de Maistre’s reading Journey around My Bedroom, and Nocturnal Expedition around my Bedroom, it had flipped the switch in his head like a light bulb. Xavier de Maistre was used an example in de Botton’s reading to help circumnavigate and rediscover ways to appreciate not only the travels one goes on forth, but to discover the unknown and unseen appraisals that have been disregarded. Being accustomed to a situation or ones surroundings induces habituation where acknowledgments lack. For the reason that, a person’s mind craves new experiences and endures ventures that have not been accomplished yet because they believe there is nothing left to learn in the place they are familiarized with. When De Botton returned from his trip to Barbados and back home to London he states, “That the city had stubbornly refused to change… [He] felt despair...

Retail Capability

...operational excellence is being tested. What is also being tested is the standard of the communication solutions and technology you are applying. It goes without saying that you must have absolute confidence in this technology. But exactly how and where can Ascom apply technological expertise in the retail environment? ASCOM AND RETAIL 5 FOCUSED SOLUTIONS FOR EVERYDAY RETAIL SITUATIONS – STAFF SECURITY LoneWorker Alarm With Location It is an inevitable but sad fact that retail outlets face an increased security risk. Workers who find themselves manning premises without colleagues or working late hours should be able to do so with peace of mind. Ascom delivers this in the form of handsets featuring one-push alarms, PTT (Push To Talk) capability and a location finding function. Threat management When a retail outlet receives an unwanted visit from shoplifters, silent alarms with fast, direct, priority connection to security staff or police can be activated discreetly. This feature is also particularly appreciated at high-risk premises such as jewellers and currency exchanges. Burglar alarm As well as being connected directly to the relevant security services, burglar alarms can also be linked directly to handsets. This allows staff on the premises to evaluate a prompt and effective response. Speech monitoring When a handset alarm is activated, the microphone on the handset is discreetly activated in a highly sensitive mode with the speaker muted. This default......

Resource and Capabilities

...------------------------------------------------- The Resources of the Firm 1. It is important to distinguish between the resources and the capabilities of the firm: resources are the productive assets owned by the firm; capabilities are what the firm can do. individual resources do not confer competitive advantage; they must work together to create organizational capability. It is capability that is the essence of superior performance. 2. 3. Brand names and other trademarks are a form of reputational asset: their value is in the confidence they instill in customers 4. Different approaches can be used to estimate brand value (or “brand equity”). One method takes the price premium attributable to a brand, multiplies it by the brand’s annual sales volume, 5. The firm’s human resources comprise the expertise and effort offered by employees. Like intangible resources, human resources do not appear on the firm’s balance sheet – for the simple reason that the firm does not own its employees; 6. This appraisal occurs at the hiring stage when potential employees are evaluated in relation to the requirements of their job and as part of an ongoing appraisal process of which annual employee reviews form the centerpiece. The purposes of appraisal are to assess past performance for the purposes of compensation and promotion, set future performance goals and establish employee development plans. Trends in appraisal include greater emphasis on assessing results in......

Assessing Your Own Leadership Capability and Performance

...5 Diploma in Leadership and Management skills Task: Assessing your own leadership capability and performance There are so many definitions of leadership and it is difficult to establish a specific definition; The Oxford English Dictionary definition of leadership is: "The action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this." Drucker’s summed up leadership as “The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers” whereas, John C Maxwell said “leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less”. Warren Bennis focuses more on individual capability and defines leadership as "Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential." Compare these to allegedly one of the greatest leaders of all time where it is written that this leader had the ability to influence the behaviour of other people toward group goals in a way that fully respected their freedom. The emphasis on freedom was important to this leader who influenced many but he didn’t compel anyone to follow him, albeit he had many followers. This of course could not work in the world of business as we must in my opinion have people who can lead effectively supported by followers, because without followers there cannot be leaders. Review the prevailing leadership styles in the organisation (based upon leadership theories and...

Assessing Your Own Leadership Capabilities and Performance

...Assessing your own leadership capabilities and performance Understanding leadership styles within an organization A leadership style is a way of providing direction, implementing plans and motivating people. Every company applies its own leadership styles, choosing to adopt those which best suit their particular needs. no one style of leadership fits all situations, so it's useful to understand different leadership frameworks and leadership styles and adapt your approach to fit your situation. Looking through leadership theory, we find that different books and studies opt to split leadership differently. However for this assignment we will be using the Situational leadership theory, developed by Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard in the 1960’s. The model rests on two fundamental concepts; the Leadership Style and the individual or group Maturity Level. Hersey and Blanchard categorized all leadership styles into four behaviour types, which they named S1 to S4: S1.Directing This is where leaders make all of the decisions within the company, then give specific instructions to their (followers) expecting them to follow, all whilst supervising closely the work which is being carried out. S2.Coaching The Coaching style of leadership clearly defines the roles of each follower while still seeking input and suggestions from them. Final decisions are still made by the leader but communication is two way. S3.Supporting The......

Voter Capabilities

...the right information and broadening one’s horizons can lead to an amazing change in this country. LITERATURE REVIEW Everybody has different ideas about voter capability. The main points boil down to one thing: information. Michael X, Delli Carpini, and Scott Keeter state that citizens make better choices when they are informed. “The role of the citizen in contemporary American democracy is multifaceted and comes with it the responsibility to be politically informed” (X, Carpini, Ketter; p 63). Citizens are expected to understand rules and regulations when voting. Citizens must be informed when voting. Having a wide range of knowledge will lead voters to voting for the perfect candidate for this country. Public figures and public organizations are among the most influential voters in this country. When asking how much a person knows about political parties and voting, the answer is always “it depends”. It depends on who you are asking, when you are asking, and how much detail that one wants to know. If more information will be presented to citizens, citizens can gain a deeper sense of knowledge and common sense (X, Carpini, Ketter, pg 63). Knowing facts has always been important but has been receiving a lot of attention in recent years. Little information is known about people and their voting capabilities over a long period of time. A study was tested that showed the differences in two different generations. “Comparison of the two generations shows that high......

...YOUR OWN LEADERSHIP CAPABILITY AND PERFORMANCE Date 30/6/14 Word count of text not including front page, bibliography page, appendices: 2432 Margaret Hellon M5.29 Introduction The company is a small-medium sized enterprise that has traded for 50 years. It employs approximately 75 staff ranging from labourers , site managers, middle management and senior management and directors. The business is very successful having traded for 50 years but maintains its’ small to medium sized enterprise status . This is possibly due to the fact it is a family run enterprise and the Director has maintained an equilibrium throughout prosperity and recession. This is mainly due to his astute business acumen and an unwillingness to expand too quickly fearing a collapse within itself should the business expand too quickly, as has happened to many of its’ competitors and rivals. The company has retained its staff with little or no turnover, this is mainly due to the prevailing leadership style and its current structure and the attitude of its’ staff as will be discussed later in this assignment. My role is varied, however, my main title is Sub-contract/Quality systems Manager. I have developed my role over the six years I have been employed with the company, after starting as a Purchase Ledger Clerk. I work in an accounts department of seven people, all having their own particular jobs. I have management status over my own departments. REVIEW THE PREVAILING LEADERSHIP......

...McDonald’s Organizational Capabilities A.) One of McDonald’s organizational capabilities is the emphasis they place on their leadership practices and the extensive leadership programs they offer. According to an article by Joan Gallos regarding McDonald’s leadership practices, “It starts with having high standards. When we talk about people being ‘ready now’ and ‘ready future’, the ‘ready now’ candidate has to be someone who can be better than the incumbent over time. And, if every time you have an opening you put somebody in that’s stronger, you’re going to increase your organizational capability.” (Gallos, 2011) 1.) This organizational capability definitely contributes to superior customer value.
