...Characterize business information types into one of four categories: audio, data, image, and video. ♦ Estimate quantitatively the communication resources required by the four types of information sources. ♦ Explain why system response time is a critical factor in user productivity. It is important to understand how information communication relates to business requirements. A first step in this understanding is to examine the various forms of business information. There is a wide variety of applications, each with its own information characteristics. For the analysis and design of information networks, however, the kinds of information usually can be categorized as requiring one of a small number of services: audio, data, image, and video. Our examination covers the following topics: • How the impact of information sources on communications systems is measured • The nature of the four major forms of business information: audio, data, image, and video • The types of business services that relate to each of these forms of information • An introductory look at the implications of these services from the point of view of the communications requirements that they generate Information sources can produce information in digital or analog form. Digital information is represented as a sequence of discrete symbols from a finite “alphabet.” Examples are text, numerical data, and binary data. For digital communication, the information rate and the capacity of a digital channel are......

...primary drivers behind the development of the Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) protocol in IEEE 802.17, which has recently been approved as a standard [1]. A ring topology was chosen in order to meet the need for robustness with fast recovery from network faults. The topology consists of two fiber-optic rings in which data is transmitted in opposite directions on the two rings. This topology, illustrated in Figure 1, is referred to as counter-rotating rings. When a fault occurs on a ring, data can be routed to its destination in the opposite direction around the second ring. Fortunately, telecommunications network providers had already been deploying counter-rotating rings in their access and metropolitan networks. Since these rings have been based on SONET/SDH [3]/[4] as the Layer 1 protocol, the network providers wanted an access protocol that allowed them to upgrade their SONET/SDH time division multiplexed (TDM) add/ drop multiplexer (ADM) nodes into packet add/drop nodes for at least part of the ring bandwidth. Advantage and Disadvantage of Entrance Exams to

...Advantage and disadvantage of entrance exams to universities in China and US As we all know, students who want to go to college must take exams which are called “entrance exams to Universities”. College entrance exams are considered to be the unique approach that the students are admitted by the colleges, and a significant factor that determines a student’s future development. They’re even regarded as one of the turning points in their lives. The similarity of the college entrance exams in China and that in the Western countries is that they are both the ways of selecting students for the colleges. Well, it's a must door for all the Chinese senior students to the higher education. It may be considered to be too exam-oriented, or too narrow and strict to the students, however it has last for decades. It is actually useful in choosing talented people. To take an even spectacular example, in order to get a good result, students must be hard working, considerable, insistent and knowledgeable, and these, are just what the society needs. In total, everything exists has a reason. I think the exam is workable in some way, but can still be improved. In China, more than half students take exams on June 17th and 18th, in China. In that day, many students march in the classroom to wait for the examinations. Whatever the weather is hot, they full of confidence and stress to write down their answers. Even though they are ill and cannot give up the test, for they cannot live up to...

Personalized Recommendation Based on Overlapping Communities Using Time-Weighted Association Rules

...Personalized recommendation based on overlapping communities using time-weighted association rules Haoyuan Feng1, Jin Tian1, Harry Jiannan Wang2, Minqiang Li1, Fuzan Chen1, Nan Feng1 1 2 Tianjin University, Tianjin, 300072, P.R. China University of Delaware, Newark, DE, 19716, USA jtian@tju.edu.cn Abstract Modeling users’ ever-changing interests has been a critical topic in recommender system research. In this paper, we propose a new personalized recommendation framework by leveraging and enhancing overlapping community concepts from complex network analysis literature and developing a time-weighted association rule mining method. Experiment results show that our proposed approach outperforms several existing methods in recommendation precision and diversity. Keywords: personalized recommendation; overlapping community; time-weighted association rules; user interests 1. Introduction Recommender systems have been implemented by many commercial websites, such as Amazon and eBay, to help users discover products of their interests. High-quality recommender algorithms and strategies can greatly increase profits and improve user loyalty. One of the most important aspects in personalized recommendation is the user interest modeling. Most of the conventional user interest models are static models, such as the user-based collaborative filter model, assuming that the users’ interests do not change over time. However, users’ interests are rather dynamic, e.g., users may prefer......

Correlation of Entrance Test and Scholastic Performance (Gpa) of Grade 7 Students

...Introduction Entrance to Grade 7 is determined by examination. This is to identify students’ readiness in high school education. The result of the test is formative factor whether the student is accepted or not from which student seeks admission. Schools may decide to use standardized test which may be purchased from testing companies or they can use validated teacher-made test. The NSDAPS uses teacher-made test for grade 7 student applicants who are from public schools nearby. It is composed of English, Mathematics and Science Test. According to Hakkinen (2004) admission rules should be designed to help in achieving education policy goals and they should be comprehensible, stable, fair, cost-effective and legitimate. Student quality is also of direct economic interest and universities are interested in predicting the academic achievement of the students in deciding which applicants are to admit. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the result of the entrance test and scholastic performance (GPA) of grade 7 students. According to Flejoles & Depamaylo (2011), the academic readiness of a student in college is seen to be contributed by his or her basic education. Likewise, high school students’ readiness is important towards their success in high school. This school year, the NSDAPS makes it sure that its programs really attend to the learners concerns particularly in admission strategies and programs instruction. Review of Related Studies ...

...LAN Operating Systems Scenarios Read the three scenarios below and answer the questions that follow each scenario. 1. You are the network administrator for a new company that has 10 users and that plans to add 5 more users within a year. The files need to be accessed by all 10 users, and each user must have different security rights. What kind of network would you install? How would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other? Define each component. 1.2. I would install a client/server network on a local area network (LAN). Every computer connected to the network would have a network interface card (NIC) and through the use of Ethernet cables, connect to the company server. Users would be able to store files and share company resources through the server. Implementing a Windows based operating system on the server will allow for the network administrator to assign different security rights and privileges to different users. I think that for this particular situation I would set up an extended star network. I would choose this one because the business is relatively small and plans to grow, this type of network setup is very easy to add users onto and also still provides the access restriction needed for lower level employees and the ease of access for higher level employees without them being able to see what the other is able to access. “As the name implies, this topology is a star of stars. A central device, usually a switch, sits in the middle...

Examinations

...Examinations — good or bad ? "Examinations" - This is a word that causes sleepless nights, a word can change a cheerful person into a nervous wreck. So, what are examinations, and how can they be any good? An examination can be defined as a detailed inspection or analysis of an object or person. For example, an engineer will examine a structure, like a bridge, to see if it is safe. A doctor may conduct a medical examination to gauge whether a patient is healthy. In the school context, it is the students who take the examinations. These are usually a series of comprehensive tests held at the end of each term, year or, in the case of public examinations, after a few years. One of the main purposes of school examinations is to improve the quality of education. From the results of the examinations, the teachers and planners of the curriculum will be able to gauge the extent to which the students have acquired the knowledge and skills of the course material. This would, first of all, provide an evaluation of their teaching methods, so they can improve them, if necessary. Examinations are also used as a yardstick for measuring the capability of the candidate, for further education or employment. For example, examination results are the main criteria when selecting students for entrance into universities. It is assumed that the examination results would indicate whether or not the student will be able to handle the course. In the case of employment, it is felt that......
