Job classification and wage schedule is designed to ensure that employees are classified appropriately and consistently according to their education, work experience, skills, and work performed, and that the salary ranges for positions are competitive with similar positions in the public and private sector. In an idealistic situation the company should have the sole responsibility and rights over setting forth rates of pay for various job classifications. Any grievances or disputes of the companies job classification and wage schedule should be handled directly with in the company.
Viewing the Job classification and wage schedule in a realistic standpoint, giving that the union would want some authority over job classifications and wages. If and when the company adds a new job classification or modifies and existing one. The Union would have at least 5 working days to examine the job description to determine if it accurately describe the principles of the job and whether is in pay range. The Union would then have the opportunity to meet with the company and discuss if any changes need to made. If an resolution can not be established the union would then be able to file a formal grievance.
Why Realistic:
Realistically it would not be fair to the union to not have saying over job classification and wages. It is important that all jobs classifications and wage schedule be reviewed by the union to assure that they are within standards of the current job positions and functions, It is also important to give the union enough time to accurately review new job classification or existing job classification that have been modified or altered. The wages of each job should coincide directly with the job function and responsibility this would help limit any unfair labor practices in wages and…...

This article is excellent reading for those that conduct negotiations in the performance of their job as well as those that are involved in negotiations for the myriad circumstances of day to day life. ...In the dynamic world of business, negotiations often involve incredibly complex proceedings that are determined by a myriad of diverse factors. Four specific features of the negotiation framework, namely power, trust, emotions and culture, intrigued us extensively, and so we sought to examine the impact that these factors had on the course of a negotiation, paying particular interest to the tactics employed and its effectiveness at the bargaining table. To achieve our objective, we interviewed three successful working professionals with diverse corporate experiences and backgrounds (Refer to Appendix A). Power/Influence in Negotiations Past researches have examined the ways in which persuasion and influence were employed in negotiations, either through direct or subtle means, to achieve desired outcomes. This can be achieved when power is strategically employed in the negotiation process to effectively orientate and influence the counterparty in one way or another. ...I found the Negotiations course to be very effective in delivering the stated course objectives. The exercises help reinforce some concepts learned during class discussions and from the reading material. As a person who generally avoids conflict, I found the course both challenging and rewarding. The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) confirmed my avoidance tendency, as my TKI assessment produced the following results: Competing rating of 7, Collaborating rating of 3, Compromising rating of 9, Avoiding rating of 8, and an Accommodating rating of 3. Avoidance is a behavior I have engaged in since childhood. As I reflect on why I tend to avoid conflicts, I am immediately drawn to two factors: 1) I am an introvert by nature and 2) I grew up in a household where I witnessed abuse, in other words there was physical violence associated with certain conflict. There could be other contributing factors to my avoidance tendency, but these two are most prominent. Given this tendency, I have found through experience that I am more likely to negotiate with myself; I am more likely to negotiate using a “soft” negotiating style – especially when negotiating with parties I perceive as peers or superiors; and I am more likely to focus on the division of the pie, addressing positional issues quickly instead of looking for ways to create more value. Cross cultural negotiations are complex and involve both personal and cultural – they have an impact on both perception of conflicts and the methods used to solve them. Many factors influence the outcome of cross-cultural negotiations and should be considered before entering into negotiations with another culture. ...In class we had our first group negotiation, which proved to be a very challenging exercise. There were two teams, a labor union and factory management. The factory management wanted stricter rules and lower labor rates while the labor union wanted good benefits, higher wages, and less regulation. In addition to having team interests we also had individual interests. For example, I was an employee who worked at the factory 30 years so my interest was to have less regulation and to have higher benefits. Although each of us, had a desire to win, and had our own interests that could have made the negotiation distributive, the best approach was an integrative approach. This negotiation was distributive in nature since it had to do with getting the “most” or “least” points yet it did not have to be. Since my team knew that a distributive approach would not lead us anywhere we decided to use an integrative strategy. For example, the other side was not going to give us a substantial increase in benefits regardless of our options so we needed to find a way to accumulate points a different way. Therefore, we began pushing for higher wages and we were able to get a fifteen cent increase to give us 3 points, we required that we signed the labor clause (+2), slight increase in benefits (+1), weak regulation( -1), and one management regulation ( -1), etc. Overall, as a team we accomplished a gain of 7 points.
