Being able to work effectively on a team is critical in the current job market where every employee is closely measured. Team work is very essential in what we do. Here are some ideas on how to be a good leader.

Listen to your team: Listen to others. Even though you are the team leader and you make the decisions, you should always ask people what their opinion is. Try to incorporate them whenever it's feasible. You aren't a dictator.

Take in others' suggestions: When someone gives you an idea, work on it. Think of how you can improve on it. A good leader is one that listens and not just talks. Show the team you are flexible to consider their thoughts.

Include everyone on the team: Include everyone. If some people are a little left behind, help them. Always try to include them. Find a task for everyone no matter what their skill or level.

Encourage your team: Sometimes people are scared to try something and this is where the leader comes in. You have to encourage your team mates and show them that the task is possible, even if difficult, and try to make it fun for them. Show them the positive results of their work.

Know what you are talking about: If your teammates are as confused as you are, how will they know what to do? As the leader, you must do the research first, or have the most information.

A team working together: Enjoy being a leader. Even though leaders have to take things seriously, there is no reason you can't have fun. Just don't get too carried away. Balance the serious business at hand with regard for the morale and spirits of the team.

Pay attention to morale: A demoralized team won't function. You must set the positive spirit, make the goals clear; show how the job is feasible and possible. No one will work for an impossible goal.

To aid in this, the strategic business leader needs to know which processes are most critical to the organisation, and which of these can be delivered as services. This research project applies a tested methodology for identifying critical processes, and from this set, develops generic reference models, which serve as a means of identifying potential services. This service eco-system visualisation provides the business leader with the information needed to make the strategic business choices, and the software developer with the identification of strategic services, from which to develop smart services. Business Process Reference Models provide a visualisation of inter and intra-organisational processes. From these process maps, this research will identify those processes most critical to the business and from this determine which are most strategic for service development from the organisation’s perspective. A team leader is someone who inspires a team to reach their full potential through mutual respect and leadership. In addition, the team leader must possess excellent communication skills. How Leaders Develop Leaders

...“How am I doing as a leader?” asks Larry Bossidy, CEO of AlliedSignal in a meeting with his operating mangers. “The answer is, how are the people you lead doing? Do they learn? Do they visit customers? Do they manage conflict and initiate change? Are they growing and being promoted? “When you retire, you won’t remember what you did in the first quarter of 1994, or the third. You’ll remember how many people you developed – how many you helped have a better career because of your interest and dedication to their development. When you’re confused about how you’re doing as a leader, find out how the people you lead are doing. You’ll know the answer.” Andy Grove, CEO of Intel: Roger Enrico, CEO of PepsiCo; Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric; and Admiral Ray Smith of the U.S. Special Operations Command agree with Bossidy. All are respected leaders of successful organizations that constantly outthink and outmaneuver their competitors. Though those leaders have been 1 2 instrumental in their companies’ success, they have also built large pools of talent. They have contributed to their organizations’ success by personally developing leaders at all levels. Once upon a time Here’s what you would see if you visited Grove, Enrico, Welch, and Smith leading their businesses. Intel. In Santa Clara, California, Andy Grove is teaching Intel managers how to lead in an industry in which the product (semiconductors) doubles in capacity every 18 months. Good Leader

...A good leader is one who is able to engage members and get results. A great leader is one who listens to and empowers members to be innovative in looking beyond the present, to guide the path to strategic positioning, and places a premium on collaborative goal setting. A great leader is humble.  They really understand that their job is to focus on the goal and not on themselves.  Good leaders often compete for credit with the results in order to gain more influence or authority.   "To lead people, walk beside them ... As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate ... When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves!'" Great leaders don’t operate in a vacuum assuming that they always know best.  They know to consider input from everyone impacted by a decision in order to get buy-in from their team, stay grounded and remain objective. Although they retain final say, they’re team will stand behind the decision knowing that they’re input was wholeheartedly weighed and considered. James C. Collins loves to tell the story of Darwin E. Smith, someone most readers have probably never heard of. As Smith was ending two decades at the helm of Kimberly-Clark, maker of Kleenex and other personal-use paper products, he was asked what had driven him, what had he done to make his company so successful over time. "I was just trying to become......

Characteristics of a Good Leader

...Characteristics of a Good Leader Introduction Leaders have an important role within an organisation related to its success, productivity and the performance of the employees. The ‘fundamental task of a leader is to build and maintain a high performing team’ (Furnham, 2005, p.566). However, Yukl (2013, p.18) argues that there are numerous and diverse definitions concerning the concept of a leader as well as the term leadership, although a general consensus appears to suggest it involves a process of influencing and guiding relationships within an organisation . Guirdham (2002, p.15) emphasises the importance of leaders having good interpersonal and communication skills, which as Yukl suggest involves the ability to persuade others. Yukl (2013, p.18) further states there are additional factors that contribute to good leadership such as the situational context and the use of power. Another issue regarding the characteristics of leaders is that many theories and models have been based on Western perspectives (House and Aditya, 1997, p.409) and typically based on research with white males (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, CIPD, 2008, p.7). There is some cultural crossover in servant leadership, which according to Northouse (2013, p.219), was originally proposed by Greenleaf in the 1970s, and also has origins in ancient Eastern and Western philosophies; for example, it is deeply embedded in Arab-Islamic culture (Sarayrah, 2004, p.59). A further concern is......

For example, some understand a leader simply as somebody whom people follow, or as somebody who guides or directs others, while others define leadership as "organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal”. Studies of leadership have produced theories involving traits, situational interaction, function, behavior, power, vision and values, [3] charisma, and intelligence, among others. Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to communicate and interact with other people, both individually and in groups. People who have worked on developing strong interpersonal skills are usually more successful in both their professional and personal lives. How Team Leaders Show Support–or Not

...RESEARCH & IDEAS How Team Leaders Show Support–or Not Q&A with: Teresa Amabile Published: May 31, 2004 Author: Martha Lagace What does a team leader do so that employees know they are being supported? A Q&A with HBS professor and creativity expert Teresa Amabile about new research. team leader. This led us to delve more deeply into the different types of leader behaviors that appeared, and to look at how those specific behaviors influenced people's perceptions of leader support and, ultimately, their creativity. What do leaders do to make employees in creative functions feel supported or not? That was one of the research questions posed by Harvard Business School professor Teresa Amabile and colleagues in what has turned into a penetrating study of creativity in organizations. By analyzing nearly 12,000 daily diary entries from employees working on creative projects—everything from making a new high-strength fabric to developing a database for a global hotel chain—they were able to chart how and why team leaders have enormous impact, positive or negative, on creativity. Amabile et al.'s findings were published in the February issue of The Leadership Quarterly as "Leader Behaviors and the Work Environment for Creativity: Perceived Leader Support." Amabile, an influential scholar on creativity, conducted the research with Elizabeth A. Schatzel, Giovanni B. Moneta, and Steven J. Kramer. She recently discussed their findings with HBS......

Is Odysseus a Good Leader in the Odyssey?

...Sometimes people aren’t as great as we perceive or hear them to be. The epic poem The Odyssey by Homer is about a war hero and king named Odysseus and his journey home from the Trojan War and it reveals how even great leaders have their flaws. Odysseus is faced with many trials throughout his journey home to Ithaca. Although he is said to be a perfect leader, we later see that his flaws are what cause these challenges and ultimately gets in his way to get home. Odysseus is a person who likes adventure and likes to experience things first-hand, because of this he is an imperfect leader. Odysseus has his qualities, he’s a brilliant strategist and has shown that by being the one who came up with the idea to use the Trojan Horse to end the ten-year-long war. When coming back from the war, one of his first trials is against a cyclops named Polyphemus. He and his men get captured by the Cyclops and get trapped in a cave where it is blocked by a huge boulder. When Polyphemus asks for Odysseus’ name, Odysseus says “‘Nobody - that’s my name. Nobody - so my mother and father call me, all my friends,’” (223). This is a good idea not to tell they cyclops his name, it shows he's quick to think of a good plan because of him being on the spot when faced with the question. The reason why he says his name is “Nobody” is so when Odysseus attacks the Cyclops. NOBODY is attacking Polyphemus. It’s a clever trick and it would have worked if Odysseus hadn’t revealed later that “‘say Odysseus,......

How to Become the Leader

...How to Become the Leader I Want/Need to Be Jami Fedro Rasmussen College Author Note This paper is being submitted on May 28, 2016, for Michael Schneider’s B492/MAN4143 Contemporary Leadership Challenges online course. Leadership is a very broad term and has many definitions depending on the situation. If you ask anyone what it means to be a leader, you will likely hear something unique every time because everyone has his or her own idea of what leadership is. Even though the definitions may vary, the general sentiments remain the same: Leaders are people who know how to achieve goals and inspire people along the way. Leaders will have a vision of what can be achieved and then communicate this to others and evolve strategies for realizing the vision. They motivate people and are able to negotiate for resources and other support to achieve their goals. Many people view management as leadership but it is not. Leadership comes from influence and influence can come from anyone at any level and in any role. Being able to help lift others up and work together toward a common mission will build influence. True leadership comes when those around you are influenced by your life in a positive way (Helmrich, 2016). Leadership is about positively impacting others through example and enabling a continuous rippling effect. To me leadership reflects in everyday actions and behaviors. Being a leader is not a one-time thing, it is a life-long commitment. Leadership is...

Good Leader

...The quality of becoming a good Leader Becoming a leader is probably the hardest thing to do. You have to get people to respect you, honor you, and have to be able to be discipline and obedience. Look at Moses when he was trying to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The things that made Moses successful were six things that were install abilities and was anointing. Third is his sacrifice. Fourth is his wisdom. Fifth is he is very confidence. An last his humility. (ex. 12:28) So you see this journey Moses had was making him become one of the most humble leader of his time. A leader communication God instructs his people You hear a lot about in a relationship that there is no communication. Well it’s the same thing as trying to become a leader. Without the ability to communicate a leader goes on a dark long path by himself. You will never get an vision unless you grab it an put it in his or her heart. God did just that when explain to the Hebrews families how they could save the life of their first born sons. (ex 12:3-23) Attitude: My way or the highway!!!!! Pharaoh thought it did. Not only did he rule with absolute power, he also displayed his true arrogance. Pharaoh revels his arrogant character, through his defiant response to Moses request that he let his people go. But Pharaoh Pride led to arrogance, and his arrogance lead to rigidity. His heart became stone cold and hard. You know that really should have been a song. “ My way or the highway” Because the......
