One of the assignments this week is writing about a significant strike in the late 1800's. There were some pretty big ones such as The Haymarket Strike of 1886, The Homestead Strike of 1892, and The Pullman Strike of 1893. I am going to touch on the Homestead Strike of 1982. The Homestead Strike was the largest strike of the 1800's. This strike happened because the Irish union workers were upset that Chinese immigrants were working for less than Americans were working for. During the strike things got out of hand. “The strike at the Homestead became violent when the company brought in armed guards from out of town. The guards were hired partly to protect the factory from the strikers. The guards were also expected to protect new workers that the company planned to bring in to replace the strikers.
Not long after the strike began, there was a gun battle between the striking workers and the guards. Ten people were killed and many more were injured. The dead included both strikers and guards.” (Burns, 2009) With things out of hand the governor called in soldiers to make sure nothing further happened resulting in violence. The strike was not successful at all. The strike did not end the way the workers anticipated. After about three and half months to about four months most if not all the workers gave up and accepted the terms which in short was lower pay and they went back to work. Most of the workers quit the union resulting in the union being powerless after they left. They also lost some public support for the steel workers union mainly because of the violence that came from the strike. The strike also caused business owners more opposed to labor unions. In short this strike caused more harm than good. It actually made things worse and resulted in some deaths. They went through a…...

...Reconstruction And The New South Sandra Michelli HIS 125 June 23, 2013 Paul Sunderman Reconstruction and The New South 1. Columbian historian Eric Foner (1983) quotes W. E. B. DuBois in calling Reconstruction a “splendid failure (p. 16).” After studying the events of the late 19th century, defend whether or not you agree with his position. What are the long-term implication? “A Splendid Failure”, a statement made by the African American Historian. W.E.B. Du Bois has been used to describe what some see as the best way to describe the results of the Reconstruction Era. So the question one has to ask is if this remark is actually true. Was Reconstruction a 100% failure or where there some success that came out of this time period in American History? I would say that it was neither, that in fact there were some success and there were some failures. The best way to describe my point is to use what the Military calls and After Action Report and see what these success and failures were. In looking at success of the Radical Reconstruction period the first one that stands out is in fact some say the reason the United States split and ended up in the bloody Civil War. That being the fact that Slavery was abolished. It was now once and for all illegal for a person to own another person as property. Schools for blacks were being created that had not existed before. Schools such as Salem University which was founded in Mississippi in 1872 would not have existed had......

...Week 9 Final Assignment ETH/125 October 12, 2013 Dr. Regina Pacheco, Ed.M., PhD. Week 9 Final Assignment My experience in this Culture Diversity course has given me a new insight and thought provoking information that has helped me to relate and understand diversity in a new and different way than I had before. Diversity can be such an interesting topic. When one mentions the word “diversity” several things come to mind. An most often, the first thing that comes to mind is the diverse culture, right here in America. To gain a better understanding of all the different cultures around the World. A person could spend their lifetime traveling around the world, from one culture to another. Why do that? When all one has to do is sit back and take in the daily occurrences and experience everything around them. Right here in America. It is hard to find a country more culturally diverse than our very own, and yet we fail to see it. There are several reasons why one could fail to see all this diversity, whether it be a lack of understanding or just a lack of willingness to understand. For a country that is called “the melting pot” (Schaefer, 2012, p.24), we certainly still have a prevalent degree of prejudice and discrimination. Some would call it a lack of insight and willingness to grow, I prefer to call it ignorance and fear. Fear of differences and change. Diversity is the inclusion of different types of people from different races and culture in a group of......

...THE CAUSE OF WORLD WAR II PODER VANG HIS/125 CHRISTOPHER PRICE MARCH 15,2015 The cause of World War II have been said that there were many causes of the war but the one that was the most significant reason was the Great Depression (CHAPTER 24 World War II; HIST2, Volume 2, Kevin M. Schultz - © Cengage Learning; All rights reserved; Causes of War; pg. 407). During 1929 and 1932 the stock markets were collapsing which ended American investment in Europe. It caused the economic to slow down and without American dollar, Europe face industrial decline, unemployment, and widespread homelessness for workers. During all of these problems, it caused some political tension between France and Spain. Fights broke out between Communists and Nationalist over who had the best plan to the disrupted economy. With all the fight going on, the crash had a devastating effect on Germany who reparations payments for World War I, which were funded by the American lenders. Half way between 1929 and 1933, Germany had a withdraw from their invests, which caused Germany to have a production withdraw. Now during this time in the year of 1933, Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist Party gained power of Germany and took control of the whole state. Driven by delusions of grandeur and by racist and anti-Semitic ideologies, Hitler and Mussolini did not stopper their economic reform. Hitler even defied World War I’s Treaty of Versailles by occupying the industrialized Rhineland in 1936 and annexing......

...the shop and stated that he would like to purchase the golf clubs the contract had not been formed, because the shopkeeper is well within his rights to refuse the customer, even though the shopkeeper had the product in the window for purchase. This would not be the case if the product in the window had been labelled as an offer, in which case the customer could then enter the shop and agree to the offer. So, the golf clubs in the window was merely a willingness to negotiate. The same can be said for the legal case Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain vs Boots the Chemists (1952). This is a case where determining the point of the “sale” was crucial. In this case it was determined that the goods on display within the pharmacy were a willingness to negotiate and not an offer, and there was only acceptance when the customer took the product to the register to pay and the pharmacist then agreed to sell that product to the customer. Because of laws that require listed poisons to be supervised by a registered pharmacist, that sale could be refused at the pharmacist’s discretion. 2. a) A restrictive covenant is something that can prohibit certain actions should a person want to withdraw from an agreement. And it must be considered to be reasonable in order for it to be up held in court. In the case of Tom and ABC Motors it has stated in his contract that he cannot work for any other car company for 5 years. The courts would rule that this is unfair because it is too broad of a...

His/125 Radical Reconstruction and the Populist Movement

...the wrong place at the wrong time. The Democrats in North Carolina led a massive campaign of white supremacy in 1898 and again in 1900. In Wilmington, they staged the only municipal coup d’état in United States history led by Alfred Moore Waddell, a former political opponent of Russell. Democrats across the state put armed guards at polling places, stuffed ballot boxes and skewed voting results across the state. However, it was their virulent, racist propaganda that was perhaps the most important factor in the elections, and it was partially Russell’s fault for not hitting back against it. Instead of emphasizing politics based on class and calling out the cartoons of demonic black men as categorically false, Russell was indeed afraid for his own safety and chose to stay quiet. With the ascension of Charles Brantley Aycock in 1900 to the governorship, the constitutional amendment to disenfranchise black voters was in place and the populist movement in North Carolina was dead....
