Ghost

...The themes in the Canterville Ghost The Canterville Ghost is a ghost story. Ghost stories belong to the genre called horror literature, whose purpose is to scare the reader with situations that cause horror or fear. The most common technique is suspense, the slow insinuating of a doubt or of a frightening revelation, which keeps the reader interested.    This story can be defined an inverted ghost story, because a lot of elements are different from the traditional ones. The main difference is the fact that Mr Otis is not scared by the ghost, while usually people should be. Moreover, the Ghost itself is frightened by the Otis twins.    There is also comic relief bordering on farce, including buckets of water balanced on half-open doors. But the story has a dark centre. The crime and retribution which led to the haunting is ghastly, and this is really not a comedy at all, but a tale of redemption through the power of love. The innocent girl of the family, appropriately called Virginia, prays for the ghost and endures terrifying if unnamed experiences to release the ghost.   Also, The Canterville Ghost is both a parody of the traditional ghost story and a satire of the American way of life. Wilde obviously intends to satirize American materialism, but he pokes fun at English traditional culture as well. American vs. British society: “The Canterville Ghost” is a study in contrasts. Wilde takes an American family, places them in a British setting, then, through a......

Ghost Story

...going. Greenwood Lake was an interstate lake, lying in both New Jersey and New York State. During the resort era, several steamboats operated on the lake and they would meet the trains and take passengers to various resorts around the water in both states. After World War II and till this day, the area went under major renovations to change from a resort area to year round residences. A fellow friend of mine and resident of Bergen County was kind enough to share her experiences with the supernatural, all which occurred right under her own roof. It is not surprising that an area with so much history and life would generate ghostly phenomena. What makes this ghost story so interesting is that it is so unexpected. Sitting on a cold bench, right before practice, I figured I would ask around to see if anyone had any good ghost stories to tell. Little did I know that I would find one that would send chills down my spine. As the oldest sibling growing up in their two story house in Bergen county, Dana remembers a lot of her childhood as well as her brothers, who is only a couple of years younger. She made known that her house was in fact a vacation home that had the luxury of having the lake right in the backyard. It is a two-story house and after moving in they decided to put on addition. Prior to the addition and back when it was just a vacation home, a family who had two little boys occupied the house. The events that took place during that time were gruesome. One day......

...apparent reason. If any of these things have happened to you, then you may have experienced paranormal activity. Or how many times growing up did someone tell you that ghosts are not real? Since the beginning of time, Whether or not ghosts actually exist is a debatable question in almost every culture and region around the world. Only a few people who believe in ghosts are able to point out countless instances of unexplained phenomena in which strange sightings and paranormal happenings have taken place. On the other hand, majority of the people are skeptics because they do not believe that there is anything beyond the natural world and they also dismiss such suggestions that “ghosts” are illusions of human imagination that have no scientific basis or proof. This paper explores the question: whether or not do ghosts really exist? Define ghosts and paranormal phenomena I am a believer of paranormal phenomena; there have always been superstitions about the paranormal. People who did believe in ghosts have tried to prove the skeptics wrong that there are things that we cannot see with our own eyes. Because of this, capturing paranormal phenomena, visiting actual haunted places, and discussing how spirits are able to attach to certain objects or even children are the key aspects on proving to the skeptics that ghosts are real.    Paranormal phenomena are very intriguing. Since I was a little child, I always hear creaks, strange noises and never had the ability to......

...office for support him with international workers from neighbor countries. Nils may contract with another construction party to work together with the existing one. In this way, Nils can finish the job on time with higher cost. Or simply outsource a firm. Superstitions and ghost stories going around the region is another dimension of the challenge. Nils has to find a way to deal with it too. Maybe he can ask hotel management to hire a temporary specialist to change the image. 2) What would you do and why? Discuss briefly. (10 marks) I am from Turkey and I am very familiar to superstitions which imposes behavior of publics. In these kind of cases, it is not so likely and easy to convince a person to believe there is no such thing as ghost. Instead of fighting against paranormal with rationalist point of view, I would come up with an idea from Thai’s own belief set. In other words, Ghost stories could be a part of Thai culture and most of the people may believe the existence of evil spirits. However 95% of the Thailand population follow Buddhism religion which encourages people to approach to those evil spirits with kindness and goodness. Buddha himself teaches his followers not to scare from these ghosts. If I were Nils, I would use Buddhist religion against Thai culture and tradition. Moreover, I would start a campaign to attract people thanks to the holiness of the region. If it is necessary to be cruel, I can even make them believe that they can meet with their......

Ghost Employees

...Ghost Employees As long as a company has a payroll office, the risk of having a ghost employee exists. A ghost employee refers to someone, either real or fictitious, who is on the company’s payroll but does not actually work for the company. A ghost employee is most frequently a recently departed employee, a made-up person, or a friend or relative of the fraudster who created the employee. There are a few steps that are taken in order for the ghost employee to be successfully added. First, the fraudster has to add the ghost employee to the payroll or, if it is a recently terminated employee, change their information. In order to do so, an employee has to have access to the payroll records. Timesheets and wage rates are then submitted or set in the payroll system. A paycheck is then issued to the ghost employee after passing the supervisor’s approval of payments. Lastly, a check or electronic deposit is received by the fraudster, or accomplice, and converted for their use. The potential loss to the victim organization of a ghost employee scheme could be enormous due to the recurring nature of the theft. After the perpetrator has successfully created a ghost employee in the payroll system, the process of issuing paychecks ensures a steady stream of funds to the fraudster. Joseph T. Wells’ article, “Keep Ghosts off the Payroll,” explains how Turner, a payroll specialist, almost got away with creating ghost employees. By simply peering over the shoulder of a co-worker,......

Ghosts

...Ghosts and spirits have haunted the world for centuries or so some believe. Christian theology talks of the transcending of certain ghostly imitations also known as demons or poltergeists. ( Wiebe,p.1). Although the origin of ghosts descends far back into time the belief of ghost varies from person to person. There are endless sightings, photographs, and unexplained mysteries. There has never been a confirmed announcement of the existence of ghosts but there has never been a declaration of no possibilities either. How is it known if they are real? There is no way of knowing for sure. It is a choice people must make for themselves to accept the reality or to accept the falsehood. The most important question is what convinces people of something that is not in confirmed as a fact in a science textbook? “The savage or barbarian has never learned to make that rigid distinction between imagination and reality, to enforce which is one of the main results of scientific education.” ( Wiebe, .1) Those that do believe in ghosts say that they are transparent materializations of a person who has died. Ghosts have been described as human in size and gossamer in their appearance. It is the essence of the soul that has decided to have an extended vacation on the planet. Reasons for this haunted apparition walking around without its mask varies. Fanatical experiences and brutal deaths can excrete enough energy to leave an imitation of the event behind. A bloodthirsty murder can leave an......

Ghosts

...GHOSTS The obscure question that whether ghosts exist or not has gone back thousands of years and although some believe that they are real there are also those who think that they don’t exist. There are many ways to prove that ghosts are real but the three main facts that prove that they exist are, first, they have been sighted by thousands of people from all over the world. Second, they are a part of many religions and last, ghosts have been caught in many pictures and on tape several times. There have been thousands of ghost sightings from all around the world. Some people have seen some grotesque looking ghosts while others have seen rather beautiful, good-looking ghosts. A very popular and well-known one is the ghost of Stanley Hotel. Employees have reported hearing the clamour of a great party in the grand ballroom when there is no one there and many guests have reported seeing ghostly figures in their rooms at night. Lord Dunraven, the previous owner of the land the property was built on, can be seen standing over the bed or looking out the window of room 407. It is relevant that he is widely blamed for any jewelry or valuables that have gone missing in the hotel over the years. There are many religions out there that believe in some kind of ghosts, spirits, or jins. For example, the Islamic faith believes that there are jins and they also live on this planet with us. They are also a creation of god just like us humans and they are not usually visible to normal...

Ghost Workers

...Clint: ghost workers Clint was Construction Engineer at a public transport network site and was a shrewd as well as conscientious professional who spent most of his time mingling with foremen and construction workers. Nevertheless he was a popular figure as he could earn the respect of his colleagues. Bobby, a site foreman, was working with Clint on a new project. Bobby had an assistant, Chui who had been his right hand man for many years. One day, Chui fell ill and Bobby took over the routine check of books and accounts. He suddenly saw the names of two men whom he did not recall seeing on the site the day before marked into the attendance book. He thought it was a mere error of entry but to make sure, he summoned the two men to come and see him. When the two guys showed up, Bobby was amazed to see that they were totally unabashed. They admitted outright that they have been absent the day before and that their chums had clocked in their attendance cards for them. They were even brazen enough to put forth a number of points to justify what they had done. According to them, attendance at work did not necessarily mean that the progress would be faster. The guys need to time out and rest in order to throw themselves with renewed vigor into their tasks after their leave days and they could work hard to compensate for the day lost. The productivity would be higher. And they had never let Bobby down, had they? This had been a system drawn up by the men and everybody knew about......

Ghost Man

...Amayha Dycus ENGL 1102-03 Essay on Cohen’s Theses Ghost Nearly Always Escape Every scary movie with a monster ends with a traumatic event. Which many believe the monster is destroyed and will never return again. But as the audience we know nine times out of ten the monster escapes. So it is safe to say that the monster always escapes, except for some rare occasions. When the monster escapes it creates an “aww moment” for the audience because everybody cannot wait to see what happens in the next movie. Having the monster escape creates a desire for the audience to return to see the next movie or even see that same movie again. So what movie doesn’t have a monster escape, not very many if you think right off the top of your head. That is why I will be focusing on the topic that monsters always escape. After doing my research, I decided to focus on ghosts rather than the broad topic of monsters. Ghost are said to be souls of deceased humans that did not get into Heaven or Hell and are stuck on Earth. Majority of the time, they reside in The Veil, but sometimes they appear in a physical dimension (Supernatural). Based on all the information, I have chosen to compare my thesis to these three movies: Insidious, The Gallows, & Poltergeist. As for the movie, Insidious, I plan to focus on the ending with the father, Josh. As a child Josh was haunted by an old woman that would only show up in pictures. The older he got the closer the old woman got in the pictures. Until......

Dilemma of a Ghost

...Question: How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers? The book "The Dilemma of a ghost" written in 1965 may be interpreted differently by two different readers. The dilemma of a ghost was written by Ama Ata Aidoo, a Ghanaian writer who portrayed some form of tension between the communal and traditional Ghanaian value system and the individualistic american culture. The text may be interpreted differently by two different readers as a result of the different culture, time setting and language. The two different readers' assumptions may not be wrong as they both have different cultures, different time settings as well as different languages and may therefore see things differently. This is the reason why writers ensure that their messages are conveyed effectively taking the differences of their prospective readers into consideration. Firstly, the difference in interpretations of the text by two different readers could be as a result of culture. In the novel, The Dilemma of a Ghost, the West African Culture is predominantly portrayed and as a result any African that may pick the book may easily relate to the book. The novel is about a young Ghanaian man, Ato, who returns to his home from the United States of America with an African-American wife called Eulalie. Ato had not consulted his family about the marriage, this creates a conflict between the two cultures. In the West-African culture, the elderly women in the family pick the......

Ghost Whisperer

...Ghost Whisperer By Stephanie Nicole Schaffer 10/02/2015 OTH036 GothicLit Sec2 Sem1 I remember it like it was yesterday. I had just woke up from another one of my strange dreams. I usually dream about random people. It starts off as a nice dream but soon turns dark. I first found out that I had a gift when I turned 11. I could see things other people couldn’t. People wanted my help, and I didn’t understand most of it until now. Now that I look back I realize that those people wasn’t normal. They was dead. Now since you know my story, I’m going to tell you about the one experience that changed my life. It was Halloween. One of the nights I see the dead the most. I sat writing in my journal about the children that have went missing in Ohio. I looked outside and saw the moon. It was surprisingly big tonight. I looked at my clock. It was midnight. I decided I should go to bed now. As I got up I heard a noise in my closet. “It’s just another one of those encounters”, I said to myself. I opened my closet door and saw a young girl. Her red hair in pigtails with two blue bows tied at the top. The bows matched her blue dress. She had frilly socks with dress shoes on and she smiled it me. It was at that moment her appearance changed. She was soaked like she had went swimming in her clothes or got caught out in the rain. Tears ran down her face. One of her pigtails was undone and a bow was missing, along with one of her shoes. She mouthed “help me” then disappeared. ...

Ghosts

...“Ghosts” Chimamanda Adichie’s, “Ghosts,” tells a story about a day in the life of James Nwoye. The story begins with Nwoye, a retired professor, going to the University bursary to inquire about his long overdue pension. While there, he runs into an old acquaintance, Ikenna Okoro, with whom he taught with at the University prior to the Nigerian-Biafran War. It had been generally accepted within the community that Ikenna had died during the war, so James was quite surprised to see his old friend “return from the dead,” so to speak. The two talk for quite some time; inquiring about each other’s families, and saying how much has changed since they have returned to Nigeria. Nwoye informs Ikenna that he is often visited by the “ghost” of his deceased wife, and the narrative ends with Nwoye, “listen[ing] for the sound of doors opening and closing” (73). Through the employment of narratological devices such as free indirect discourse, direct discourse, and the first-person focalization, the narrative serves to highlight the major themes of impotence, sterility, and sociopolitical gaps that arose in the aftermath of the war. Through free indirect discourse, we are given insight into the impotence and sterility afflicting the poverty-stricken country. Clustered under a flame tree are men talking amongst themselves, calling down curses upon the education minister and vice chancellor whom they believe embezzled school funds. “His penis will quench,” they say, “His children......

Ghost Essay

...I can’t say I don’t believe in ghosts but I will specify I believe in only one ghost which is called the Holy Ghost. The account you are about to read is not fiction but an event I personally experienced. To begin, I would like to clarify the meaning of ghost according to www.dictionary.com as simply “the spirit of a departed one.” I want to give some background to help you understand my references. In Acts chapter 1 of the Holy Bible, Jesus, who was God on foot, departed into heaven. He gave instructions to His disciples to tarry in Jerusalem until they received the power from heaven which was later identified as the Holy Ghost, also known as the spirit of God. Imagine speaking in a language you have never learned. What would it sound like? How would you feel? On April 8, 1972, I experienced the phenomena for myself. It was the same experience with the Holy Ghost as the approximately 120 people in the upper room which included the disciples and Mary the mother of Jesus as recorded in the book of Acts. As I prayed for the Holy Ghost to come into my spiritual heart and help me be the person God wanted me to be, I began to speak in a language I had never learned. Such a transformation took place that night within me. The feeling was something that is hard to describe. It was definitely not a feeling of fear as you might think when encountering a ghost. The feeling was more of exhilaration, joy, excitement, and happiness. Even those descriptive words do not fully...
