Sex and the City can be compared to previous examples of post feminist, woman-centered drama produced for prime-time network television in the US. These are dramas that in the wake of second-wave feminism selectively deploy feminist discourses as a response to cultural changes in the lives of their potential audience; an audience that is addressed as white, heterosexual, and relatively youthful and affluent. They emerged out of a hybridization of genres driven by a desire to maximize audiences by creating drama that appealed to both men and women. The feminization of crime genres such as cop shows (Cagney and Lacey) and legal dramas (LA Law, Ally McBeal) allowed for an exploitation of the generic pleasures associated with the masculine, public world of work and the feminized, private world of personal relationships. Their responsiveness to changes in the socio-political context had also allowed for an engagement with liberal feminist issues arising from women’s relation to the law and to work. A focus on women as protagonists, whose actions drive the narrative, replaced the marginal and narrow range of roles available previously to women characters in these genres. Although it shares their incorporation of feminist themes and their focus on the liberal, heterosexual, white, metropolitan, career- oriented woman, Sex and the City is very different from most dramas. It gives insight on how women are perceived in today’s society. They have, or want it all, are independent, and the show, Sex and the City, is used as a tool to correct most views about women. One of the consequences of the multiplication of channels has been a diversification in television’s address to audiences. ...1950s VERSUS TODAY: I Love Lucy vs. Desperate Housewives The 1950s housewife was the epitome of a woman. She had poise and grace and cared for her family more than having a career. She had a smile on her face, dinner on the table, and her child always used please and thank you. At least on TV. Fast forward 50 years and much has changed in our history and the way that women are portrayed on television. With women no longer expected to give up their careers in order to raise a family, working moms are represented more with each passing decade. Two television shows that can be examined to explore the difference in television’s portrayal of housewives are I Love Lucy from the 1950s and Desperate Housewives from the 2000s. While the shows premiered more than a half a century apart, there are many similarities in the shows. And that’s not on accident. After World War II ended, men came home and families started growing and prospering, able to buy things they had to go without during the rough wartimes. With servicemen home and the baby boom well underway, women were expected to reclaim their dominance over the home, while their husband’s reclaimed dominance over them.1 Housewives were to be seen more than heard, all while keeping a smiling on their face. ...The TV Those endless days, the same routines, the same people, the same complications at work, nothing new is meeting you. Life has become a routine, and suddenly you see no point with it. You stay home one day, watching some television, and discover that life is just in front of you. You see the same person over and over again in different TV-shows, and realise it could be you. Maybe life isn’t so bad and routine marked after all. The story The TV is written by Ben Loory and published in the newspaper The New Yorker in April 2010. The story is about a man that stays home from work one day, because he is sick, and like most of us would do when we are sick, he lays on the couch all day and watches television. When suddenly he finds a show he wants to watch, and he wonders. The main character seems so familiar, and the show is so long. Afterwards he takes a shower, and realises, the show was about him, he was the main character. The story starts in medias res, which is a common characteristic for short stories. An omniscient third-person narrator tells the story. “In the morning, the man awakens confused… He feels as if he were forgetting something..” P. 2, l 47, the narrator knows how our main character thinks and feels, which works really well because, the main character has so many different thoughts and feelings about seeing him self in the television, so it makes it easier to understand the story. ...The TV By Ben Loory “The TV” is a short story written by Ben Loory, and his story was published in the April 12, 2010. First I will look at the course of events in this story. The story “The TV” is about a man, who stays home one day suddenly from his work. On this day he discovers that there is a special TV channel about himself or his life - but it could be his other self he had. After that the man becomes very engrossed with the TV show. In time he saw reflections of himself of the man's world in the TV show. At one point, he discovers that he chews on his lips on TV, so he starts trying to stop chewing her lips in his really life - not in the TV show, causing his other self to stop chewing his lips. And yet, his other self is different, better. He reads intellectual books, asks his boss for a raise, hosts corporate meetings and his “real self” begins to feel jealous. The author also used religious words in this story, such as the word "God," when he says: "My God.” This could symbolizes that he thinks that he is his God, because he is different, but there are still some who are like him, but maybe he has not felt. Years ago, television shows focused on the family, the strong bonds they shared, and building strong family ties. Shows like “The Brady Bunch”, “The Cosby Show” “Full House” and “Family Matters” were shows that could be enjoyed by the entire family. Today, television has taken on a new role, and it’s called “Reality T.V.” Reality TV are shows that observe real-life situations. They are t.v. programs that present real people in live, though often deliberately manufactured, situations and monitor their emotions and behavior. The industry now filled with unscripted dramas, makeover sagas, celebrity breakdowns, lifestyle-change shows, dating shows, talent searches and just about any kind of competition you can think of (and a few that you probably can't). In the fall 2007 season, there were more than a dozen reality shows in prime-time slots on major networks and cable channels. On any given night, you can watch "The Biggest Loser," "Dancing with the Stars," "The Real World," "I Love New York," "Beauty and the Geek," "America's Next Top Model," "Ultimate Fighter," "The Bachelor," "Run's House" or "Project Runway" -- to name just a few. They say that even back then, a lot of television was filled with destructive acts. From talking to my grandparents, television was not as much of a necessity as we believe it to be today. Moreover, Netflix is starting to grow its 3D catalog slowly. In fact, a lack of content is no longer an excuse. The text is focusing on whether it’s the television station and the team behind the cameras that have the responsible for actions the participants may do to themselves or others such as a crime, while participating on the show. The show Intervention running on A&E is a great example of how the boundaries have been pushed. The show is about the life of those who suffer from addiction and their family. People on the edge make good television and therefore will the people behind the show push the boundaries as far as possible. Situations in these kinds of shows can get out of hand and the participants can become a danger to themselves or others, here is the question asked when is the crew obligated to step out from behind the camera and intervene. The crew is looked at as witnesses and by the law in the United States, witnesses are not obligated to step in and save people or stop a crime.
