The definition of a sound education can vary between individuals. Some would say a sound education consisted of solely completing compulsory education and others would see it as achieving a higher education. How one succeeds in education will vary through individuals. People have different methods of learning and will achieve the best results in their own way of studying.

The foundation of a sound education are the years spent building a platform to have the ability to work efficiently from. In the early stages of child development one would not expect an infant to study or indeed have any skills to do so. Paiget has entitled four different stages of learning. 'Sensory motor, pre-operational, concrete operations and formal operations'. These stages of development will have been taught via many different methods which will not involve studying.

The way in which people learn can be majorly affected throughout life for a number of different reasons, one being their parenting. Robson (1996) maintains that parental involvement can result in an increase in knowledge, skills and confidence. A students peers can have a both positive and negative effect. In its most destructive mode, the peer group can demand blind obedience to a group norm, which can result in socially alienated gangs with pathological outlooks (Perry, 1987). The academic level of a school in which is attended can also have an effect on results. Hoxby's k-12 results 2000 Sacerdote (2001) found results are higher if surrounded by academically strong students. The passion individuals have and the want to succeed in education seem to prove the most important. Students who are most motivated to learn and excel in classroom activities tend to be our highest achievers (A. E. Gottfried, 1990; Schiefele, Krapp, & Winteler, 1992; Walberg & Uguroglu,…...

Effective Study Skills

...Portfolio Task: Module 1 “Effective study skills are the sole foundation of a sound education” This essay will define what study skills are. It will consider how these techniques aid learning and what influence they have upon what is considered a ‘sound education’ and what other influences may impact upon education. A skill involves being able to perform an activity well (Cottrell 2008). Study skills can be defined as “methods of purposeful learning, which usually involve reading and writing” (http://studying/askdefine.com) Study skills are techniques used to understand learning and to manage success. To be able to study effectively, self- awareness is needed, being able to identify your own strengths and using these to improve learning. Essentially any skill which can enhance a person’s ability to study can be deemed a study skill whether this is improving computer skills for sourcing information or developing critical thinking whilst reading. There is a wide range of different techniques that can be categorised as study skills. Some of which may come naturally to the learner and others can be learnt, either way a skill needs to be developed well in order for it to become an effective tool. To develop a skill involves using personal qualities such as “self-motivation, time management, determination, commitment and perseverance” (Cottrell 2008). These personal skills will always be essential in successful study. Something cannot be......

Effective Study

...EFFECTIVE STUDY SKILLS ARE THE SOLE FOUNDATION OF A SOUND EDUCATION (507 words) Study skills are key to a sound education but there are many other factors involved in a student’s study outcome. These different factors must be looked into as all students are different in lots of ways. What works perfectly for one student may not work for another. Different factors for each student must be considered, right back to the basics. Social factors are very influencing, for example. Some children are encouraged to study, some not. Family members may or may not study so it may be not seen as normal practice to study. Life experience has a lot to do with it, sometimes these experiences can be drawn on to help with future choices. Not everyone can afford to study from a financial point. Good health and a good mind frame is important. Sufficient access to the raw materials needed and having somewhere comfortable and suitably quiet to study is a big help. Being motivated and genuinely interested in the study and where it will hopefully lead. All these very basic factors are extremely important and crucial to a successful outcome. Education is a process of transferring experiences and information from person to person, from one Nation to another down through the ages. It facilitates world progress and human success. Broken down this process is a very intricate individual thing which succeeds due to the many different......

Effective Study Habits

...Some people never learn effective study habits in high school. So, they may struggle through their first semester of college. A student should figure out how he/she studies the best. Many people cannot create a quality essay at four in the morning with the music playing and the television on. Although poor study habits may cause the student to struggle, which results in unhappiness, he/she can become connected by joining clubs, music groups, or sports that will help a person make more friends while balancing their life, making them a happier student. So, students should get involved! School does not have to be just about schoolwork. One should find an activity that his school offers, and he/she should join if their schedule allows. Yet, some people have a harder time adjusting to school than other people and may feel that success is impossible. However, a student can be successful in many ways, such as by being on time for class, keeping an assignment notebook, and managing time. For a student to be successful, he/she must begin by getting to class on time. To do this, he/she should make next morning preparations on the night before, such as ironing their garments on the night before class, this will save at least five to ten minutes in the morning, and he/she may use that time to do something else. Always make sure there is gas in the car so he/she will not have to waste more time going to the gas station. Next, one should purchase an alarm clock and batteries if they......

Study is ‘the devotion of time and attention to gaining knowledge of an academic subject, especially by means of books’ (www.oxforddictionaries.com) Cottrell 2013 writes that ‘a skill is a learned ability rather than an outcome achieved through luck or chance’. Cottrell 2013 also goes on to say, ‘you can fine tune skills through practice, feedback and reflection’. ‘Study skills are approaches applied to learning’ (wikipedia.org) Study skills include creative writing, evaluating, self and timemanagement, researching, reading, critical and creative thinking and organisation. According to Hoover and Patton, ‘study skills include the competencies associated with acquiring, recording, organizing, synthesizing, remembering and using information’. Effective Study Skills

...“What are the effective study skills that provide a sole foundation of a sound education” Study skills looks at a wider range of abilities rather than just ‘academic’ skills to help achieve a sound education, as explained by Stella Cottrell (2013, p36). Cottrell begins by explaining that the study frame work known as ‘APT-S’ which are broken down into four categories of skills; Self, Academic, People and Tasks. In this essay I will look at each framework individually and what they mean before concluding how they assist in building the foundation of successful education. Self- management skills relates to the individual and their environment at a more complex level as these can change during the course of an education. Some of self-management skills includes independence, skills management, learning, strategies, time, improving performance and metacognitive skills, as noted by Stella Cottrell (2013, p 38). Independence involves being well informed and skills management is using current strengths whilst improving weaker skills. Learning skills looks at personalizing current skills whilst enhancing strengths. Strategies skills looks are various ways such as creative, reflective, effective and motivating, whilst metacognitive skills focuses on meaningful reflection on how to think, learn and self manage. Academic skills include basic research skills, understanding academic conventions, thinking skills and written communication skills (Cottrell 2013, p 39). Basic......

Effective Study Skils

...Module 1 Effective Study Skills are the sole foundation of a Sound Education Education generally occurs through any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks or feels. “In a narrow technical sense it is a formal process by which society deliberately transmits it’s accumulated knowledge, skills customs and values from one generation to another e.g. instruction in schools” (Wikipedia). There are many factors that create a foundation for acquiring a sound education, economic, cultural, biological and environmental. For people returning to study or experiencing academic study for the first time, learning ‘study skills’ enhances their ability to succeed. The acquisition of knowledge will always require study whether practically or academically. Skill, as defined by the Merriam / Webster Online Dictionary, is the ability to use ones knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance. Devine (1978), wrote that “study skills encompass a range of coordinated cognitive skills and processes that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of students learning”. Good study skills will facilitate learning, enhance memory of materials, heighten understanding of concepts, and help students understand critical and analytical processes and also to learn to explore both sides of an issue to form conclusions or hypothesis. Gettinger and Seibert (2008), having reviewed many academic studies on the impact of teaching study......

Effective Study

...Effective Study Skills In a field such as Foot Health, it is important to learn appropriate study and research skills. According to Gettinger and Seibert, "Capable students at all grade levels may experience difficulty in school, not because they lack ability, but because they lack good study skills"(2002). Because of this, students must be active participants in their learning and seek out appropriate study skills that will help them to retain the knowledge needed to be successful in their chosen fields. While acquiring good study skills will help students to retain the information they are learning in class and in textbooks, research skills will help them to identify current research and, later, stay current on the trends in their field. Establishing strong study skills takes practice. First of all, students must learn to read critically. In order to do this, they should identify the main ideas in texts by using summarizing and paraphrasing strategies. These will help them to remember main ideas while not being overwhelmed by minute details. While skimming can be a useful tool, it is often necessary for students to read and then reread texts to fully grasp the content. Once they understand the content, then skimming is an appropriate tool to refresh their memory. This also makes summarizing and paraphrasing easier to do. Students should also organize their time and any class materials. First of all, they should take adequate notes in class. If they are not able......

Developing Effective Study Habits

...DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE STUDY HABITS Mayland Community College S.O.A.R. Program Revised April 2002 GET THE STUDY HABIT Did you ever stop to wonder what sets apart the really successful students from the average ones? Why do some students who appear to study all the time just get by, while others who don’t appear to put in as much time and effort do well? Is it all related to IQ and genetics or are some other factors involved? The truth is that success in school is not so much determined by sheer intelligence as knowing how to study. Studying is a skill. Being successful in school requires a high level of study skills. Students must first learn these skills, practice them and develop effective study habits in order to be successful. Very often the study habits and practices developed and used in high school do not work for students in college. Good study habits include many different skills: time management, selfdiscipline, concentration, memorization, organization, and effort. Desire to succeed is important, too. In this module you will discover your areas of strength and identify your weaknesses pertaining to studying. You will learn about your preferred learning channel, tips to organize your studies, and ways to help you remember what you study. The skills you will learn about in this module can be applied in other areas of your life as well: your job, your career, or any activity that requires thought, planning, information processing, and selfdiscipline. You’ll......
