Eating healthy produce anytime
Everybody likes to eat but not everyone likes the time it takes to cook. It is much easier to buy fast food or “open a can”, thus compromising our health and nutrition. With all the preparation time even eating becomes a chore. Chopping vegetables and fruit can be a discouraging tedious first step in the cooking process. The time it takes to cook them just as discouraging. While it is true fresh produce contains more nutrition than canned produce; frozen produce is very similar in nutritional value and is a convenient alternative.
There are daily amounts of nutrients recommended for intake to help maintain our bodies. Produce provides us with some of these and fresh produce provides it in higher amounts than that provided when eating it from a can. Unfortunately, not all fresh produce is available year round and eating the same varieties that are available (these are called seasonal items) can become boring. The produce that you discover not in season is usually much higher in price and often lacks the proper nutrients because of early picking and shipping from miles away, including overseas. When buying fresh produce it is best to buy locally. Again this is because of the time it takes to transport most produce plays a significant role in how many nutrients are lost. According to Preston Andrews, PhD, a plant researcher and associate professor of horticulture at Washington State University, "The nutrients in most fruits and vegetables start to diminish as soon as they're picked, so for optimal nutrition, eat all produce within 1 week of buying," (Burns, 2010, p. 50). In this case even shopping becomes an added chore since one would have to shop at least once per week to avoid waste.
Even when farmer’s markets are closed for the season and seasonal items are not available we can still enjoy fruits and vegetables of choice. Frozen…...

...Healthy Eating Plan Comparison A person’s eating habits are an essential part everyday life. To help maintain one’s health would require a person to eat healthy with the correct nutritionally rich foods; this would require changes in some of our current eating habits. From week one I have made changes some minute others larger, hence changes have come about. As previously stated in week one, when I first started this class, I was clueless to what a healthy diet consisted of or how much was to be consumed. For more than 50 years of my life, I was always taught a starch, meat, and vegetable and this is what a healthy diet consisted of, never a mention of portion sizes. Here it is now almost 2012, the way a healthy nutritional diet is looked upon now is totally dissimilar from the time during the 50s; in turn, the way I raised my children to eat was basically with the same information. Al though, I see food and nutrition in an entirely different perspective today. Up until the point I was diagnosed with having diabetes I had always eaten whatever crossed my mind at that moment not realizing the effects of eating like this. Since I got older, many pounds have been gained as well as gaining many health issues with the weight. I have been trying since the beginning of this class to eat healthier while trying to be more physically active, although due to my health issues I am unable to exercise the way I want to. Even with my health issues the amount of......

In week one I was eating six and a half ounces of grains per day now I am at half an ounce of whole grains which is well under and five and a half ounces of refined grains which is a little over the target amount per day. In week one I was eating two cups of vegetables per day, in the current analysis I only ate three quarters of a cup. During this week’s analysis I did not eat any fruits and in week one I ate half a cup. In week one I consumed one and a quarter cups of dairy over the three days in the current analysis I consumed one cup over the three day period. In week one I ate four ounces of protein during the current analysis I ate three ounces of protein. My current analysis shows that I did not consume any oils in week one I consumed one ounce. By looking at the two analysis’ I found that I still need to improve my eating habits so that I can get the nutrients needed to live a healthy life. I need to eat healthier snacks, eat more protein, dairy and grains. I need to limit the amount of sweets that I consume. My diet still lacks the amount of protein, fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy that I need to consume during a day. My exercise results......

I was quite pleased with my results this time around because they showed that I and getting more of the daily recommended amounts of the food groups. Also since the last three day food intake assessment, I have improved in my overall physical activity. It may seem strange but I have noticed an overall change in how I have been feeling. It is true, by eating healthy and staying active keeps you in a great mood. In my last assessment I noticed that I was eating the proper foods in the daily recommended food groups, however I was not getting the proper amount of daily servings. Once I learned this information I knew that I had to do something about it. I thought in my head I am already used to eating the foods, I just need to increase my daily intake. To help me do this, I started tracking the amounts of food that I have been consuming. To further assist me with tracking my food I downloaded a nutritional application to my Blackberry. This program works by me inputting what foods I eat and how many more servings I need to acquire the recommended daily amounts. I like this application because it allows me to enter the data right after I eat. I don’t always have my laptop handy with an internet connection, so this was a great alternative. As with my last three day analysis, I consumed mostly chicken......

...Eating healthy should be a goal that every person tries to achieve. It’s no surprise that people aren’t eating healthy now due to the food industry and the lack of motivation someone might have. ...Healthy Eating After 50 Shannon Owens UMUC ASIA Spring Session 2 April 26, 2015 Healthy Eating After 50 Aging is a part of life that is associated with high risk factors for many diseases. As people grow older, they become more prone to infections and diseases. This is because the vital organs and the immune system weaken over time. The vital organs such as the heart and the brain are also affected. The heart increases in size in most senior individuals and the blood vessels become stiffer (Morelli & Sidani, 2011). This makes the heart work harder to pump blood through the vessels thus puts the senior individuals at risk of getting hypertension (high blood pressure), cardio vascular disease and other cardio vascular problems (Morelli & Sidani, 2011). However, there is evidence that eating a balanced diet along with safe physical activity makes great strides in reducing such adverse effects of aging and helps senior individuals live longer. This paper explores the molecular mechanisms of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan that is said to have the effect of lowering blood pressure in seniors and thus reduce their chances of getting hypertension. Overview of the DASH Eating Plan The link for the eating plan is http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/dash. The eating plan focuses on increasing intake of vegetables, fruits, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. This is because they......
