Dressing for Success

BUS 474- PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
Prof. Marie Hermann
October 11, 2009

Introduction “Successful and unsuccessful people do not vary greatly in their abilities, they vary in their desires to reach their potentials.” (John Maxell). Over the many years, the clothing that an individual wears has continued to tell a vast amount about their character. From an individual that wears loose trousers, to an individual that wears tight blouses, the attire a person wears ultimately shapes their identity, impacts the perceptions of others that may have about them, and the individual’s professional goals in a business (Bruce). However, the one variable that still remains true and sound is, when in a business world one must dress for success. Therefore, it is highly important to dress for success for interviews, searching for a job, and even on the job sites as our attire sends great messages to the perspective viewers. As the old saying goes, “It is much better to be overdressed than to be underdressed (or undressed).”
Appropriate Dress Wears for an Interview
According to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics, “55% of another person’s perception of you is based on how you look” (Dressing for Success). Dressing for success during an interview sometimes determines whether an individual will or will not get the job. The interview is the process where the interviewer puts a picture to the resume that was presented. Therefore if the resume sounds professional, the individual is expected to look the same vice versa; in other words “play the game, look the part.”(Bruce) Dressing for success consists of wearing the appropriate clothing that will make an individual stand above the rest. When purchasing professional business wear an individual should shop at a place that specializes in business wear and also purchase preferably darker/solid colors…...

Success

...Sonia Espitia Biography Counseling 104 04/18/11 Merriam Webster defines success as a” Noun, an obsolete outcome, result, degree or measure of succeeding, favorable or desired outcome; also the attainment of wealth, favor or eminence, one that succeeds.” However, one of my personal favorite definitions of success, is a quote I came across a while back by an unknown author, and it states, “ If success is not on your own terms, if it looks good to the world, but it does not feel good in your heart, it’s not success at all.” I’ve been a faithful viewer of the “KTLA Morning News” for the past two years. During these two years, I’ve gotten to know about and admire a very prominent and well respected anchor news reporter named Michaela Pereira. Michaela Pereira has been with the “KTLA Morning News”, since February, 2004. However, she began her television career in Canada, where she was born and raised. She is the second of five girls, all of whom were adopted, growing up, Michaela faced a lot of diversity, since both her parents and sisters do not share the same ethnic backgrounds, she’s African American with some Jamaican, her sisters are all Native Americans, and her parents are both Caucasian. She felt as an outsider, particularly, since in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, there were not very many African-Americans; she always knew that she had to defend herself and her sisters from hostile remarks. Always, as a young child, Michaela new that she wanted to become a teacher, or a......

Success

...how the world works. Everyone achieves success by working for it. Success is a relative term that varies for everyone. Some might view success as fame and wealth, while others would say it’s all about happiness and love. However, whether it is being wealthy, famous, or happy nothing comes in packages; they have to be worked for. Education is the first pillar in being successful. It helps a person to think critically and analyse situation from different point of views. The second pillar to success is a successful career; this allows meeting new people and network with some of the brightest people. The last pillar of success is to be financially strong. Being financially strong helps a person be independent. In my opinion success is taking the right measures and working hard to achieve a high-level of education, a successful career, and being financially strong. Education is known as the key to success. The educated the person the more likely it is to be successful. Learning is power that at a different level than others. Education is not always about studying and reading books; it is taking your experience and applying what you have learned to live a more prosperous life. An article from Bloomberg called “Obama Tells Students That Hard Work in School Pays Off for Future Success” quotes Obama saying “Excelling, whether it’s in school or in life, isn’t mainly about being smarter than everybody else, that’s not really the secret to success. It’s about working harder than......

Success

...freedom. For some, it includes a boat, a RV, and a cottage by the lake. However, another definition of success doesn’t list any of these. Success does not have anything to do with material goods but is rather tied to broader concepts. One measure of success is how happy a person is. For some people, they might feel their happiest when they have luxurious items. However, this is not universally true and is consequently not a true measure of success. Happiness for most people is a happy and loving family. If this is someone’s definition of success, then their family is what defines their success. For some, this success might mean trying new things and a lifestyle that supports it. Success is tied in with happiness because they are both highly subjective. Health can also be considered a defining factor in success. People feel unsuccessful if they, or someone they love, are not healthy. For instance, can father feel successful if his child is ill? This is why doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and hospitals are so important. Not only do they allow people to live longer, but they also allow people to feel successful in their life. Finally, success can mean overcoming hardships. No one likes hard and rough times with tears and pain. Someone who has come through the pain often feels like he or she has accomplished something. An individual that has overcome an obstacle achieves a measure of success. As David Brinkley has stated, a man can be proud if he has laid “a firm foundation with......

...statements also can be. Depending on the corporation, this information can be presented in a way that reflected an image according to the user’s needs, in other words, present the information that users want to see. In this sense, is important to know that this information is not always the most real neither the better. By definition Window Dressing is: “Window dressing is a set of actions or manipulations with financial or other information in financial documents (financial statements, reports, etc.) to make this information look more attractive to its users. Even though window dressing can occur at any time, it is commonly used at the end of a period.” The Window Dressing effect is a “fashion phenomenon” because its use has appeared in recent years in the media as really famous financial scandals around the world, like Enron, Worldcom, Parmalat and others. When Window Dressing is used in good terms and presented according to legal norms it could be a useful tool for the corporations, otherwise, the malicious use could end in frauds and illegal issues with serious consequences for the people involved. Window Dressing The Window Dressing effect can be divided into two types of accounting:  Creative Accounting Is a legal system that use the deficiencies in the accounting system to satisfy the needs in the short term and to achieve diverse objectives by the transitory use.  Fraud Accounting Sanctioned by the law, are the adjust of transactions and other......

Libertarian Approach to Indecent Dressing in Ucc

...with the principle that each agent has a right to maximum equal empirical negative liberty, where empirical negative liberty is the absence of forcible interference from other agents when attempts to do things. In a sense, Libertarianism is sometimes has to do with or equivalent to self-ownership. This is to say that, the Libertarian approach entrusts absolute freedom to individuals to embark on whatever activity they so wish be it joining association; politically, socially, academically just to mention few regardless of any moral view or perception that exists. Here, the individual is somehow his own boss and does things that pleases him. This research puts to bear the relevancy of the libertarian approach pertaining to the indecent dressing of the female students of the University of Cape Coast. Imaging not having control over anything you do and living your life as other people want you to live it. With viewing life from the Libertarian philosophy, libertarians will argue that each person should be able to live life as they want as long as they are not harming others. With the governments today, they create laws that protect people from themselves. This is hard for Libertarians to accept because in their opinions, each individual should have their own freedom. The core of Libertarianism is the fact that we own our bodies, our earnings, and this meaning the government has no right to take or limit any of these. Henry David Thoreau discusses in his “Civil Disobedience”......

Dressing the Part

...Dressing the Part When going on an interview your personal appearance is not only important factor in how you represent yourself to others. The way you dress reflects how you look while around others. If a person is going to an interview business casual attire is the best dress code to a standard dress policy. The major parts of dressing the part for an interview whether in person or on the internet you should use punctuality, attire should be presentable and netiquette should be simple and clear. Having a business casual dress code means that your clothes is to be ironed, and neat and take a good care of your hygiene. If a male was to dress for and interview his attire should require Khakis, or dress slacks, button down shirt, and dress shoes. As for females attire should consist of Khakis, or dress slacks, skirts, blouses, and a dress that is appropriate for a job interview. Female should also wear sensible shoes that are comfortable in to wear all day. Corporate casual wear consists of slacks (other than jeans). As for men they can wear casual chino pants, polo shirt, dress sandals, and a jacket. For women a sweater, dresses, blazers, and skirts. The four points to attire and business etiquette is punctuality, attire, table manners, and netiquette. For starters punctuality is a way to show courtesy and respect for others. Being tardy for work will lead to stress on yourself and the waiting party that are counting on you to be on time. Your attire is always about......

Dressing Our Daughters

...Chris Mercer Mrs. Asbury ENG 100 B-51 Research Essay Dressing our Daughters The only thing on the minds of corporate leaders is profit. As more and more people take to the “Occupy Wall Street” concept, it becomes apparent that there is a great disconnect between the different classes of people. What this calls to mind is a large group of people, or the “99%” as they are known, being taken advantage of by the rich “1%” of America that make up the upper levels of our nation's companies. “Considering the growing backlash over its business practices and marketing strategies, Abercrombie (& Fitch's) profits have risen steadily,” (Lamar, 1). The only way to affect any great change is to alter the perception of people so they don't buy a certain product anymore. If it becomes a well accepted notion that a product is harming young people, the odds that people will buy that product is diminished. Showing people that something is harmful is not a guaranteed way to stop them from buying it. For instance, everyone knows that smoking is detrimental to health yet people continue to buy and smoke cigarettes. This is not to say that if everyone knows fashion trends are making young women more vulnerable to sexual predators they will stop buying it, but rather if a concerted effort is made to get certain, dangerous items off the shelves, young people will consequently be safer. It is time that society understand how the “trendy” clothing worn by young women is making them more......

Dressing Up

...Dressing up Over the years it has become more and more essential to project an image of individuality. Especially in the teen-years, it is crucial to find oneself. Along with the self-awareness comes the increasing focus on other people’s image. If somebody possesses qualities that seem attractive, some people might assimilate that specific person’s behavior or style with the hope of obtaining these qualities. This is shown in the short story ‘Dressing up’, where the reader is presented with two sisters, Rachel and Flora. One of which (Rachel) possesses qualities that the other one (Flora) lacks. Flora therefore turns to drastic measures in her attempt to obtain Rachel’s qualities. ‘Dressing up’ is a short story that provides the reader with an insight into a typical, modern family that consists of a single mother who lives with her two daughters. The mother turns forty, and her birthday is the pivotal point of the short story. The story is structured in a way that gives the reader a full individually description of each of the three women involved. Throughout the whole story the reader is shown the mothers lack of capability handling her two daughters. As soon as the three of them are gathered in the restaurant, the mother senses a distance between her daughters. Her reaction is very dissimilar from the normal reaction of a parent. ‘The mother sat down between them, nibbling olives, talking incessantly, aware of the hollow silence between them,’ (page 2, line 57-58).......

(2006) Professional Development, Reflection and Decision-Making London Blackwell Publications page 144 I searched for various types of evidence that examined the effectiveness of honey as a wound dressing. I selected honey as it is commercially available and the patient could afford this as a wound dressing. To objectively find appropriate evidence for using honey I conducted searches using Medline, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) which are important sources of health research (Hamer and Collinson, 1999), and the Web of Science databases. I also used Department of Health (DH) England database, which revealed links to best evidence in the form of English National Tissue Viability Guidelines (ENTVG 2012) within which, one section refers to alternative therapies. Honey is included among these alternative therapies. Other sourced literature will be used to support my discussion and have been obtained from a variety of professional and healthcare organisations as well as books, journals, government papers, and key documents relevant to the topic. Using such keywords as ‘leg ulcer AND dressings And Honey ‘and similar combinations, the CINAHL database yielded 21 articles of which none was of direct relevance to my question of inquiry. The same search on Medline database yielded 121 articles of which about 3 were of direct relevance. I implemented the same......

Power Dressing

...Power Dressing Kevin Hysi A00359065 Social Power Relations Abstract Clothing has the ability to convey social signals and perceptions to society. This paper explores the relationship between clothing and power, otherwise known as “Power Dressing”. This is a problem because it can enable power differences to occur and it uses past research to support and validate this issue. Overall findings suggest that individuals wearing professional attire in different social situations were perceived to be more competent, attractive, and can achieve greater business performance in comparison to individuals wearing casual attire. Keywords Social Perception, Power, Clothing, Fashion, Inequality Introduction Depending on the social status and mobility of an individual, clothing is relatively expensive. This is problematic because it may enable others to evaluate an individual based on their attire. An individual with low social mobility may not have enough funds to invest into the latest fashion trend in contrast to one with higher mobility. Consequently, power differences and inequality has greater potential to rise. Taking a deeper look into this problem, how individuals decide to dress has an immense impact on how they are perceived by others in society. Paying close......

Success

...Zia Ficocelli Mr. Frank ENC1101 5/27/2015 Success is Happiness If the destination isn’t worth the road that is paved, then why walk the road? Success is about accomplishing things in life, and being happy through out all the adventures. While many people define success by the end result success is more about the journey, and being happy along that journey. No matter how the world turns it will never fall out of orbit. A goal can be small or big. Accomplishing a goal is a great thing; it is a part of being successful. Hard work is the key. The more effort put into a task, the more that will come out of completing the task. For instance, working out. More sweat, less weight. Success is happiness in accomplishments. Therefore you would be happy because of the pride you feel that comes with setting and reaching a goal. Finding happiness in a sense of fulfillment. While completing any goal though, it is important to be happy along the way. Completing long-term goals can absorb all energy inside and out. However, excitement and cheer is something to keep in hand throughout the adventure. Why would anyone spend years of their life trying to become something and hate themselves the whole time? At the end of the road, dissatisfaction and bad memories will be all the brain has to remind itself of why they’re there in the first place. It’s a waste of time to be unhappy. Following dreams cannot be that way. Remember to stay positive. Learn how to cope with the bad......

Success

...Definition of Success A mansion, a sports car, and financial freedom are all very alluring signs of success to some. To others, success includes materialistic things such as a yacht, a camper, and a cottage tucked away by the lake. According to a study conducted by World Health Organization, 15% of people in high-income nations report being depressed, while only 11% in lower-income countries report being depressed (Bromet). Looking at these statistics, one can assume that the correlation of wealth and depression are positively related. It is clear, as shown by the previously stated statistics, that money does not always lead to happiness. To others, success may also be defined as “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame” (“Success”). However, the true definition of success does not include any of these things listed above. Success does not include material goods but it is rather tied to expansive, more meaningful perceptions such as happiness, persistence, and overcoming hardships. One way to measure success is by how happy a person is. For some people, they might feel their happiest when they have lavish items. However, this is not true for everyone and is not a correct scale of success. Happiness for most people is a joyful and affectionate family. If this is what success means to someone, then one’s family is what outlines one’s success. Dr. Dennis Kimbro, author of multiple best sellers, interviewed many successful people about their definition of......

Success

...Success Success, in the dictionary, is defined as “the achievement of something desired, planned or attempted.” Therefore, success cannot be judged by anyone other than oneself. It is a personal thing. It is the realization of goals, desires, or plans made by one's self. It is not measurable and yet it is something we always use to compare others or appraise someone’s worth. Success, in one form or another, is something that we will always be striving for. Success is also defined as living well and living a stress free life. There are three levels of living well and succeeding in life: societal success, personal success, and academic or professional success. Everybody comes from a society that expects us to live as per their goals as we also work towards achieving our personal goals. The natural tendencies humans possess have a lot to do with the societal success. We have achieved societal success, typically, if we have met the right person, lived happily, started a family and raised our children well. Having good friends would also be associated with societal success. A part of societal success is also to learn to treat people well, to treat other people as we would wish them to treat us as per the “golden rule.” We need to fill these goals that the society has for us and attempt to achieve societal success in order to fill our need to belong to society and fit in as an everyday, functioning member of society. We also realize the personal goals and dreams that we set in...
