The first day of Diwali: Dhanteras
The first day of Diwali is called Dhanteras. This day marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations.
On this day, Hindus offer a lighted diva with Prasad (sweets offered at worship time) to the Lord of Death and pray for protection from sudden death. This offering should be made near a sacred tree. On Dhanteras Hindus consider it lucky to purchase silver item.
In my house we have a small temple and we do this at home while singing Indian hyms.
The third day of Diwali: Lakshmi Puja
Hindus join with their families and their Priest and they worship the Goddess Lakshmi to receive blessings of wealth and success, the triumph of good over evil.
The worship of the goddess of wealth, is the main event on Diwali in North and West India. It is extremely important to keep the house spotlessly clean on Diwali. Goddess Lakshmi likes cleanliness, and she will visit the cleanest house first. Lamps are lit in the evening to welcome the goddess. They are believed to light up her path.
On this night my family go to a hall and meet with all of our relatives. Together we do this pooja, afterwards we have a party.
The fourth day of Diwali: Govardhan Pooja
On this day, Govardhan Pooja is performed. It is when Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan with his little finger and sheltered men and beasts from the rain.
This day is also observed as annakot meaning mountain of food. Religious people stay awake the whole night and cook 108 different types of food for the bhog (the offering of food) to Krishna.
Normally I go to a temple in Wembley where 1000s of people go to see the annakoot, which is always spectacular as they have different varieties of food every time.

...Diwali - the festival of lights. That is one of the only facts or events many people know about Hinduism. In this generation, many people are unaware of the cultures surrounding them. Some people are even unaware of their own culture. Being raised in a traditional, religious family, I was able to gain a large amount of knowledge about my culture - Hinduism. I finally understood why such traditions and norms were followed. For example, many Hindus are vegetarian because animals are believed to be sacred in Hinduism. God believes animals should not be killed because they are also living creatures like us. Living in Parsippany, a town consisting of a high concentration of Indians, I was able to interact with others and gain new knowledge, as well as teach others. Due to the massive Indian population in Parsippany, Parsippany Hills High School organized a club for South Asian awareness. The Indian Cultural Club, ICC, is a club aimed at allowing students with an interest in Indian culture to come together and experience and learn about the unique culture. Each year a show is put together to exhibit the culture and I have participated in the show all throughout highschool, and plan to do so this year too. In the show, the club performs different dances in our culture which range from traditional, classical Indian dances that we offer to god to Bollywood style dances and the proper attire for each. Last year, I helped choreograph a dance segment and this year I am secretary of the...

The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance (BBC.CO.UK, n.d.). It is also an occasion for celebration by Jains and Sikhs. The festival of Diwali extends over five days and due to the lights, fireworks and sweets involved, it is most popular among children (BBC.CO.UK, n.d.). In Buddhism, the most significant celebration happens every May on the night of the full moon, when Buddhist all over the world celebrate the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha over 2,500 years ago. Hindi Essay on Diwali

...Unit 18 M2 In this task I will be analysing the arrangements made by the DIWALI event, and the organisation that went into the planning of the business event. The similarities and differences between key planning activities that I have undertaken and those completed by the organisers of the DIWALI event. Planning: the planning was very different because our event was planned in a group of five people, this meant that the people who planned it were more than ten over a period of long time and as it was a huge event, they would have to make sure it was planned ahead, such as six months before the actual event. As the DIWALI event is huge compared to the event which we are holding, it is required to have more than five people to plan the event. This means that both events would differ as to the outcome, cash as the looks of the event. This is because the event planners for the DIWALI event will be professionals; whereas this is our first event the outcome will be different. Location: the location of the event is very different compared to our event. Even though the event will be held outside the location it is very easy to think of and not a lot of thought went in to it compared to the DIWALI event. For this they need to consider the amount who will be attending, as they are aware that is a lot of people attending. Due to this they need to make sure that the event will be held in a suitable location for all the people attending. Furthermore, the space required for other......

The whole night of Diwali should be spent in the recitation of holy hymns and mediation. Svetambara Jains believe that on the night of the day of Diwali in 537 B.C.E., Mahavira achieved Nirvan, or deliverance and attained to a state of absolute bliss. The day after Diwali marks the beginning of the New Year in their calendar. An example of a Jain ritual is the wedding ceremony. The pre wedding rituals – A small puja (act of worship) called Lagana Lekhan is held at the bride's house where the priest decides a date and time for the wedding. The priest then moves to the groom’s house where the puja continues. A reading occurs by the priest and this is called Lagna Patrika Vachan. These footprints give us insight into not only our past but a glimpse of our futures. Traditions are a great contribution to an individual’s identity and help to define what generation they come from and who they are.
