Denmark originally applied to join the European Economic Community on August 10, 1961. They strategically applied for membership one day after the United Kingdom had applied. French president Charles de Gaulle had vetoed the British application to join the European Economic Community. After the United Kingdom’s rejection, Denmark had declined the membership because they did not want to join the EEC without the United Kingdom’s admittance. Years later, the United Kingdom once again applied for membership to join the European Community. They joined on January 1, 1973. When Denmark had seen that the United Kingdom had joined the EC, they decided to apply for membership and became a member at the same time as the United Kingdom (Europa, 2013.) There are many reasons for a country to join the European Union. Each country has certain interests that they will benefit from by joining. Denmark is one of the most competitive economies in the world. I will now talk about why Denmark had joined the European Union, what issues the country faces and show why Denmark has such a competitive economy. Denmark had joined the European Union in 1973. There was a vote by the Danish population and 63.3% were in favor of EU admittance. The population saw the benefits of joining the EU and believed that this would help the country. From the start Denmark strategically joined because the United Kingdom had confirmed that they would join the EU. The reason for this was because Denmark was heavily reliant to the United Kingdom with their exports. Denmark wanted to protect its agricultural exports with the United Kingdom and thought it was with their best interest to follow and join the European Union. They believed that by joining the European Union, their exports would continue. Denmark was now a member state. This now meant that Denmark was part of the European…...

Denmark: Globalization and the Welfare State

...Denmark: Globalization and the Welfare State * 1. Is Denmark prosperous because of, or despite welfare state? 2. How did Denmark achieve 3% unemployment in 2008? S to reformo so hoteli doseči bolj prilagodljivo ekonomijo brez rezanja socialnih ugodnosti. Tako so dali podjetjem možnost hitrega odpuščanja......

Cultural Analysis of Brazil and Denmark

...criticised and the critic (as he has broken an unwritten law). Thirdly, it might not occur that you negotiate with the senior management responsible for decision making (Da Silveira & Crubelatte, 2007, p.157). This aspect underlines the strong hierarchical structure within Brazilian organisations. Finally, this mix of achievement and ascription increases the prominence of contacts in Brazil. As one cannot completely rely on either past achievements or social background it is advisable to build a network. Everyone has networks, and one’s network may extend into friends’ networks (Int. Conference on Innovation & Management, 1986, p.1992). 4. Denmark 4.1. Uncertainty Avoidance in Denmark Figure 6: Uncertainty Avoidance in Denmark and UK. Adapted from http://geert-hofstede.com/denmark.html With an index of 23, Denmark scores comparatively low in this dimension. A less critical evaluation would lead to the conclusion that Danes are able to cope with change and risk much better than other cultures. An isolated view on Danish culture based solely on this score might lead to misinterpretations. Hence, it is necessary to consider institutional frameworks, the competitive environment and organisational culture in equal measure (French, 2007, p.42). The Danish welfare system, described as “social safety net” (Kuada, 2008, p.13), could also be a reason for the low UAI. Danish inhabitants may have no reason to feel insecure or to be disconcerted by ambiguous......

Socialisation and Identity Making in Denmark

Women's Rights in Denmark

...A. Denmark I. Introduction Denmark is an egalitarian society, this means that all people should be treated with the same dignity or be regarded as possessing the same intrinsic qualities despite their societal diversity of race, religion, sex etc. Interestingly this reflects in their language, which employs gender-neutral words. In addition, Denmark has the highest percentage of women in the labor market in Europe, with close to 80 percent of women being employed. They are highly respected in business and generally receive equal pay as men. To continue, women also have access to senior positions and can easily arrange flexible hours which make it possible for them to maintain both a career and a family. Before analyzing the different legislations in Denmark concerning women’s business rights, we will first discuss the concept of gender equality. II. Minister for Gender Equality Since July 1, 1999 Denmark has a minister for gender equality. He is responsible for the Government's overall activities in the field of gender equality and co-ordinates the equality work of other ministries. Gender equality between women and men has always been a general principle and objective of Danish policy. Changing governments have continuously worked to review and improve the quality of legislation and other legally binding rules to achieve gender equality between women and men. Today, women and men in Denmark share the same formal rights, obligations and......

Denmark Case

...The Economic System in Denmark The Economic System in Denmark The current controversies that have developed in the welfare state of Denmark have been a concern throughout the world. As political systems shift, there have been questions as to the rise of unemployment, the sustainability of the country due to strict immigration laws, and the increase of discrimination cases. Having the responsibility to sustain the cost of its growing population through high taxes, while entering into a recession, the country had to “enhance adaptability” (Daemmrich & Kramarz 2010) and change the traditional method of assistances. Through the demographic shift of immigrants and refugees the political issue remained prominent, while this climate was based on immigrants not adopting the Danish value system and identity while integrating into Denmark. The economic changes across the globe have had an effect on the control of industrialization and the workforce in the country, as the business world becomes smarter by reducing costs through crossing borders. It has a negative impact on the policies for the welfare state and has raised the unemployment rates. “With the decrease of regulatory barriers in foreign nations, the economies have transformed increasing competition and welcoming foreign investment” (Hill 2005). Due to the current structure and lack of political momentum for reform, the spending on social protection grew exponentially. Recognizing the increased competition due to...
