CHARACTER EDUCATION AND ME

In the world, we have more than 5000 languages and many different religions. Since we all are human beings, we have conformity to a standard of right. Conformity to a standard of right or particular moral excellence is the definition of virtue in the dictionary. [1] Although the word virtue first used in 13th century, becoming excellent in moral strengths started with humanity. Therefore educating our own moral strengths which are defined as character started with first human. Humanity does not evolve in social aspect even we lived in a fast pace world in terms of technology. Our emotional needs did not change much, we have families, friends, colleagues.
In the video Raising Good Children[2], Mr. Lickona very simply explained why people chose doing wrong and why we need to choose hard way which is a right way. When students come to the school, they already know what is right and what is wrong. Those can be defined as moral values. As a teacher, I seek the answer of how those moral strengths (character) being excelled and how individuals gain virtues in early of their life and throughout their education before they become adults.
Video of The Story of Fern Creek [3]and Conscience Discipline[4] videos showed me very good ideas about character teaching. Instead of reward and punishment, teaching students self-control plays a key role in character education. Students learned how to control their frontal lobes before they take an action emotionally. This provides them to take a right action.
Beside teaching subjects itself, to raise a good generation, character education must be a part of our life, curriculum as well. One another critical issue is objectives. Those should be defined clearly, and ultimate goal should be considered throughout curriculum.[5] When I consider myself, how those virtues thought to me, what was my…...

Coach Carter and Character Education

...The fundamental elements of character for Coach Ken Carter, the title character in the film “Coach Carter” were integrity and honesty, and self knowledge. Honesty because he told the players what he expected from them in the beginning. Self knowledge because he asked each player to think about what they wanted from the game of basketball, and helped them to realize it wasn’t just a game, but a chance for them to shine and lift a community and themselves out of negative situations, provided they make that choice. Finally integrity because, although many coaches talk a good game when it comes to holding players accountable for their behavior, Coach Carter actually walked the walk, so to speak. He cancelled a game when he found that players were not honoring the promises they had made to him to stay eligible. Coach Carter dealt with many things in this film, including unruly players and an administration that was not willing to go the extra mile for him they way he had shown that he was. The biggest dilemma the coach faced in this movie was whether or not to suspend players or games because of a lack of adherence to rules he had set in place before the season started. He told the players they each must maintain a certain GPA, and must attend classes, where he would be getting progress reports from each teacher. However, after many games in the season, his players took these requirements for a joke, and Coach Carter summarily locked the gymnasium doors until they satisfied...

Why College Education Is Important to Me

...Why college education is important to me? I strongly believe one of the most critical ways of reaching your dreams and goals in life are to have a college education. Without a college education you may find it extremely difficult to have a good enough career that will provide you and your family with enough money to do the extra things in life that are pleasurable and exciting. I also strongly believe that having a college education will teach my children that continuing their education beyond high school equals success for them in the future. Without a college education one cannot reach their full potential thus making them unable to achieve their highest and most sought after dreams and goals. One of the main reasons to continue your education and get a college degree is that it opens many doors of opportunity and allows us to obtain a better career. It is hard to find a decent job that will pay you a decent salary with only a high school education. Although a college education does not guarantee success it does give a little bit of an edge over a high school graduate applying for the same position. You have more choices in careers with a college degree thus giving you more choices in life. Having a college degree for the most part means having more money. More money means being able to do things that you cannot do with a job obtained by only having a high school education. In my case it is important to me because it played a huge role in my child custody case. I......

...Why College Education Is Important To Me   We live in a country of opportunity. One of those opportunities is being able to grow up to be what we want to be. When I was very young, my mother worked with young children. She had a licensed daycare in her home and I grew up always loving what she did. I would teach the children and play school with them. Since I was a young child I always knew I wanted to go to college and earn a degree to work with children. I want the opportunity to be able to succeed and excel in my career. I have put my career aside to be a stay at home mother and military wife. We have traveled for my husband’s career and now are a little more settled for the time being. I feel now, more than ever, is the best time to start the career I have always wanted. Being a role model for my children is something extremely important to me. My responsibilities there include - but are not limited to - payroll and accounting, project and contract supervision and planning. It is imperative that I attain a higher level of qualification than I presently hold to stay competitive and advance in this field of work. Living in a developing country presents a lot of opportunities for project managers in the construction and mining industry. It is my goal to be a qualified project and contract manager by the end of my tenure at Ashworth College. As I mentioned earlier I am employed with a small contracting firm as a supervisor where some of the responsibilities given to me are beyond what I may be qualified to handle as per my current education. Nevertheless I function in this position as any qualified employee with my determination and can-do attitude would function if given the opportunity. It would give me a great sense of personal accomplishment to see this goal realized through this course of study. Why College Education Is Important to Me

...myself receiving a college education. I begin to realize the role that education has played in my life. Education has always been there for me. Throughout grade school, learning has enabled me to express my outlook on any matter in multiple ways. Whether, I was debating on an event in black history, leading an open forum on a best selling novel, or creating my own personal narrative. I was always able to actively express my interpretation of a subject in an ingenious manner. Based on my knowledge of the benefits of receiving an education, it has definitely increased the value of a college education to me. A college education is invaluable to me because my ancestors once fought for American Americans to receive an education, it will enhance my required technical skills, and it will profoundly expand my intellect. Unfortunately my ancestors faced many economical and social barriers that prevented them from being privileged to receive a college education. But they did not allow those obstacles to deter them from becoming educated. Not only is a college education significant to me because it is a privilege, but because it is a necessity as well. I learned that to be successful and to have more than a general knowledge on any area of interest, that one must gain a college education. Through being an active learner in my studies I noticed that education is to be treasured and not to be taken for granted. While many others feel that a college education is useless, I feel that it......

What an Education Means to Me

...What Education Means to Me There are many questions that people ask in life, whether there important or not. It’s always funny when people ask “What does an education mean to you.” In my head I would reply “What does it mean to you?” But I simply just say… an education means the world. Education means my future, my life and, my career. As Brian Kaufman said “You get the better job with the better pay. But that is not the reason we should pursue a higher education.” And it’s not because there’s more in life then pay. So education means the things that others couldn’t have. Education means the night’s people read under the lamps that tried not to get caught. Education, things that others got beat brutally for. It means I have a chance to climb to the top. It means I get to prove the ones who downed me wrong. Education gives me the chance to make the ones who desired it proud. Education means I have a future. Education means I’m capable of a healthy living life. Without education I couldn’t read nor write this paper. Education means I have a chance. To know I have a shot to aim at my goal makes me overly excited. To know I can be anything I want with nobody stopping me makes me feel in charge. It’s not up to fate because it lies in my hand. It depends on me and what I choose. Education means that I determine who I’m going to be. It’s not like a dice that has to be rolled. It’s me and my decisions. So as you see Education means the world to me. This is because when...

...“Why college education is important to me?” Education is important to me because it’s the foundation to my life’s future accomplishments. Education is the process of gaining knowledge which provides both power and freedom. Nelson Mandela said in his speech lighting your way to a better future, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” (Mandela, 2003) The world has so much to offer, that I cannot pick just one specific career. I hope someday that my ambitious path will benefit not only myself, but my community and other countries. My goals are to become an SSI scuba diver instructor, a business owner, an accountant, and much more. I know I have to take one step at a time, but I will take full advantage to any opportunity that comes my way with an open mind and joyous heart. Education brings forth multiple opportunities that can help one learn how to value life experiences and form opinions and views of the world, whilst empowering one’s self personally and socially. Malcolm X said, “Without education, you are not going anywhere in this world.” (Malcolm X Quotes, 2001-2014) The world is made up of different races and cultures; we must be educated in order to understand others’ culture, beliefs, religions, etc. We must be educated to make responsible and reasonable life decisions. Why Education Is Important to Me.

...Why college education is important to me By Coleman Rickels College education is essential to me for my advancement in my career field. It is nessesary for me to aquire a degree in my field to recieve a promotion into a managment position. I have chosen construction managment because I am currently employed in the construstion field as a laborer and would like to advance in that career and become a manager in the same field. I love construction, I enjoy getting up early in the morning and meeting my crew at our yard. I enjoy the ride to the job site with the people I will be spending my day with. I like conversing with them and learning more about them every day. I enjoy getting to the jobsite, warming up the equipment, and gathering all the tools we will need to complete the days tasks. I enjoy working throughout the day and working with each other to achieve the set goals for the day. I enjoy coming upon a problem and having to put our minds together to overcome it and resume work. I believe aquiring this degree will open up a new side of the construction field for me. I would like to move into a management position and find new things about the construction field I enjoy doing. As John F. Kenedy said; “Let us think of Education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and the greater strength of our nation”. I believe that earning this......

The Importance of College Education to Me

...few of many reasons why a college education is important to me. The goals I set for myself earlier in life did not contain a college education. Honestly, as soon as I graduated High School I was burnt out. I had no motivation to further my education. I soon entered into the Sheriff’s academy and went down the path of Law Enforcement. In the back of my mind I always knew I would be better off had I went to college first, but I never did anything about it. I always made excuses why I couldn’t pursue my degree. An excuse like it is too expensive or I don’t have the time. Recently I realized a higher education was a necessity. Not only was it a necessity but it was possible. One aspect I realized was the huge incentive other deputies were receiving for having a bachelor’s degree. In the Sheriff’s Department our contract mandates a ten percent incentive pay be awarded to those deputies who possess a bachelor’s degree. This incentive is huge and can add up to thousands of dollars every year. I realized I was dumb if I didn’t take the advantage of the huge pay raise I could receive just for going back to school. Completing my degree will instantly increase my lifetime earnings by ten percent. This will greatly impact my life my future and the future of my family. It will give me the ability to provide for my family, in a way, I never would have been able to had I not taken this opportunity. Having a bachelor degree says a lot about your character and work ethic. It is almost......

How does one get the career they want and the income they desire? The answer is education several countries are known for their superior performance in academics and the pressure related to their education. Among those countries are China, India and Japan. These three countries share a lot in common; exceptionally smart students and a very strict education system that flood students with pressure from parents to perform extroadinary in school. Me and My Character

...didn’t get me anywhere at all. I remember I liked some kid, Bobby, for a while and then one day he called me a fat ass. After that day, it just made me realize that the more guys that I tend to like or have a crush on, is just going to cause more hurt in my life. The first day of 6th grade, I was just sitting and mingling with my friends and catching up with them since I haven’t talked to them for a whole summer! Anyways, after that, it got quite all of a sudden but then I looked up, and saw the most handsome boy that I’ve ever seen before. Knowing me, I of course wanted to know who he was, and what he was about. I didn’t talk to him at first because I didn’t know him, but at break I went and looked at his desk. It read his name, Lakota, and then I remembered looking at it before school and asking my teacher what kind of name was that, but then I looked again and I thought to myself, wow what a beautiful and unique name he has. After that day I had a feeling, a crush for him like no other. It got to the point where I asked one of my friends to take a picture of him for me; I can admit that I had a huge obsession for him. He made me nervous when he walked past me or when someone would say his name. By the time Valentine’s Day came, I wanted him to be mine. I asked him. I actually had the confidence to ask him myself. He said yeah when I had asked him, then the next day, he said no. Yeah, I don’t get it either. But that still didn’t stop me from......

What Outdoor Education Done for Me

...What Outdoor Education done for me….by Abdul Kahlid, 25 May 2010 As I ponder on the question that stares into me, I sit writing this piece of reflection with the knowledge that I benefitted from an institution which the late Dr Goh Keng Swee created – Outward Bound School of Singapore – in 1967, as a form of holy order that all young Singapore pre-National Servicemen had to undergo as a preparation before the actual military service. He was certainly ahead of his time and who would have thought the institution he created in 1967 is now one of the leading institutions that shape character and leadership for people of all walks of life and age. My early experiences and exposure of the outdoors was through Boy Scouts. I was conscripted into the boy scouts unit when I was in secondary 2, though there was no scout unit in my secondary school. This was to be made possible as I joined an Open unit, which was open to students of secondary school who had no scout unit in its premises. My very simple reason for wanting to join the Boy Scouts unit were to have a chance to experience the outdoors, get close to nature, be skilled in craftsmanship (I learnt that I would learn to tie knots, pitch tents, use a stove, operate kerosene lamps, learn some survival skills and many more), as well as forge friendship and brotherhood with others. I was curious about expeditions, mountain climbing trips and wondered what it would be like to trek through one. My years in Scouts opened my......
