Why am I a college student? Acquiring a college degree is an important part of my professional objectives and life. I am taking a part in college to obtain more comprehension, have the required qualifications to be successful in my profession, and to make my family delighted. I always wanted to manage my own nail and hair salon, so I chose to study Business. As a result, one day I will work for myself in my own nail and hair salon. I plan to start my nail and hair salon and become one of the top salons in Lowndes County. I was very undecidable about attending college at first. Then, I finally realized that if I really wanted to succeed and to achieve then I had to do whatever was necessary for me to do in order to do those things. I made my mind up and signed up for college. I knew that if I had never signed up for college, I would never have the ability to try to get the degree that I need to fulfill my professional goals. I wouldn’t know how to go by starting my own business nor would I be able to manage my own business. I would be lost. I wouldn’t know where to start nor how to start it. My family would feel let down by me because they are holding me up to my words. I told them that I was going to college to get my degree in Business so that I will be able to manage my own business. They are so proud of me and I am doing everything that I can do to succeed and to reach my goals. I also feel that I will be able to provide better for my kids. As a young girl, I went on a lot of different trips. I have been to many different states and countries. Traveling to see all of those different types of places, going to different nail shops getting my nails done, and going to different hair salons, made me fascinated by the cosmetology industry. I saw all of the different stuff that they do…...

I was never a straight “A” student, but I always pushed myself. I graduated from high school and went on to my first year of college. Completed that year and got married and had kids. Now many years later here I am back in school. I have grown a lot over the years. When I look back I regret not finishing school at that time, in life I don’t want to have any regrets. The early childhood profession is not for the faint of heart or the passive individual. (Josue Cruz Jr. 2008) As a mother of three I am used to being with kids and how tough it can be. So when I kind of stumbled upon my job I wasn’t sure if it was truly for me, but I decided go for it. I remember walking into the infant room my first day of work and jumping right in, at the end of the day I came home and told my husband. “I’m meant for this. This is what I want to do.” Now a few months later I am enrolled in college to achieve my degree in Early Childhood Education. So when asked why college education is important to me. First and foremost my strongest push is me. I want to do this for myself. Show myself even if I struggle I can do this. I do this for my children and my husband. We are a military family and have moved all over the place and I’ve always stayed home......

It is a big responsibility and commitment that I am getting into after having started a family. It is definitely different to start again but there is so much competition, and salary differences based on education levels and opportunities that one needs to be prepared with a bachelor’s degree to obtain the best no matter what your age is. Causes for College Dropouts

...people to graduate these days, however; getting people to graduate is not easy. Thousands of students attend college every year, and unfortunately, not all of them succeed in graduating. As, Mara Tyler says, “A student is more likely to drop out -- whether for a semester or permanently -- if he is not able to strike a healthy balance with work, school, social activities and family” (Tyler). Many students find it hard to balance work, life and school especially in a time where finding jobs are difficult and there is more to getting a job than just schooling. Three of the main factors to why students are dropping out of college are causes outside-the-classroom. Many students end up getting the job they want and, because of this, drop out of college. In many cases, students who work during college gain promotions to high-paying positions before graduating. Also, students take internships in college that turn into jobs. Since most colleges require a minimum number of courses, school forces students to work fewer hours or give up the chance at a promotion (Tyler). Mark Kantrowitz says, “Nearly three-quarters (71%) of students who dropped out of college said that work contributed to the decision, with more than half (54%) identifying it as a major factor. About a third (35%) said that balancing work and school was too stressful” (Kantrowitz). Therefore, students end up putting college on hold to pursue their job opportunities. Once a student has a position in the field he desires,......

Cause and Effect Life in College

...LP 6 Cause and Effect First Draft Tina Clouse 5/13/14 Being a college student is truly an exhilarating, exciting, but also tiresome choice, I have made the decision to go back to college for the third and final time. It truly does seem as though it has gotten harder and harder to be a student over the years, and now I have the opportunity to reflect upon why this seems to be the case. After taking somewhat of a hiatus from school, I was given the idea from above, the strength from within, and the support of my family, friends, and co-workers to go back to college for my masters in what I have finally found to be my true passion. As a social case worker I will have the opportunity to work with battered and abused woman and children, and be given the opportunity to help law enforcement prosecute those you have offended. Being a single mother of five wondrous children and the opportunity to be the mother figure in so many other children’s lives has given me the foresight, the working knowledge as well, as the wisdom and compassion to help woman and children who have been victimized. The reason that I made this decision to go back to school to receive my masters degree comes from a multitude of facets. From all of my children supporting me emotionally, my fiancé supporting me in every way that a man should, to the support from the rest of my family friends, I felt as though it was more simply put, just my calling to do this. Although there are so many positive......

Why College Is Important to Me

...Why college education is important to me? Attending college provides an individual with an opportunity for a better future. A resume containing a college degree is high testimony of a person's capability to perform at a high level. It is the instrument recognized around the world for showcasing and documenting evidence of one's achievement. If one does not undergo any form of training or education, the individual stands the chance of only being qualified for a low skilled/low paying job. The ability to take care of oneself with a decent standard of living would be difficult as the disposable income for a low skilled job would be minimal. This could also mean taking a job that works on a shift system and more times than not missing the possibility of attending college. Secondly the economy now is not the same as it was in the past three years. Currently the world is in a recession and jobs are scarce. Even persons with educational degrees are struggling to find decent paying jobs. The search for a good job is ten times as hard for today's high school graduates. This heightens the necessity of a college degree as only the most qualified will be chosen for the scarce jobs that exists. Knowledge of the world is important and interacting with persons from different walks of life broadens an individual thinking. The interactive classroom where one gets to interact with these individuals allows you to learn about other cultures and norms. This enriches the information......

Why Is College Important to Me

...Why college education is important to me To survive in today’s military, education is a necessity. Eric Hoffer wrote “In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists”. Continuing my education is not just beneficial for professional survival, but plays a vital role in my success and the advancement of my goals. As military culture progresses, education must progress as well. This culture is changing at a rapid pace, making continuous education a necessity for promotion and career longevity. Persons who are well-rounded in both their military and civilian education are viewed as having the skills necessary to survive and thrive in this ever-changing environment. The pursuit and effective application of continuous education is essential to individual success. My career so far has been filled with mandatory classes and courses designed to make me more effective on the battlefield. It is only recently that I have been able to make the shift to educational pursuits that will also benefit me after my military life is over. I never really gave much thought as to what I would do when I got out of the Army. As I draw nearer to the end of my military career I know that a college education will be the difference that makes me desirable to potential employers. What was known or used in the past may be out of date or no longer relevant. Technologies are constantly......

Why College Is Important to Me

...Why College Is Important To Me There are so many reasons why college is important to me. However, the two most important reasons why college is important to me is that I want to be a role model for my two daughters. Secondly, furthering my education can mean a many great opportunities for advancing in my career and in life. Leading or setting the example for my daughters is very important to me. By actively portraying to my daughters the importance of having a college education after high school, they will engage into participating in a plethora of new opportunities in their own lives which will enhance their way of living. They see how hard I study and how important my grades are to me that it encourages them to do the same in their high school studies now. They actively partake in my studies now, which in turn, results in them asking me questions on what I am studying. Having them involved is having them engaged in their own thought processes. If I have done that for them then I feel like I am doing my job as a Mother. I encourage them to follow in my footsteps so that they can have a better life for themselves. The second reason college is so important to me is the fact it will change my way of life. Studies show that a college education leads to better paying careers and/or advancements in a career. Having a better paying career will give me the opportunity to pay to further my daughters’ college education. It will allow me to advance in my career now...

Why College Education Is Important to Me

...Writing Assessment 5 06 "Why college education is important to me." At 51 years old I decided to pursue a college degree to enhance my resume initially but ultimately to remove limitations. I have worked in the Accounting field for about 20 years, for a variety of small family owned businesses in the construction industry. I enjoyed the accounting field, Accounts Receivables explicitly challenged me, and I was good at it. Working predominately at for small family owned businesses that have both benefits and challenges, for me the benefits accommodated my life. While raising children as a single Mother the “family businesses” provided the flexibility that allowed me to attend school events, doctor’s appointments and life events that presented themselves or were important to me. I began my career in accounting processing invoices, today I manage an Accounting Department for a medium size construction company. I was fortunate to have co-workers or supervisors that mentored me and encouraged me to expand my knowledge and hands-on experiences in accounting that was invaluable to me. I have been at my current position for a little over eight years, my career seemed to be set, and this is where I would be till I retired. Until one day, I experienced sexism toward a female co-worker in what was a predominately male business. The realization that I worked for a company that would condone those types of business practices not only infuriated me it initiated my......

Attending Black Colleges

...English 112 Professor Malik 21 September 2015 Attending a Historically Black College and University Is a Good Idea To me, attending a historically black institution is a very good idea for an African-American today. First, going to a predominantly black school makes sense from an economic perspective. In addition, black universities offer challenging majors, especially in agriculture. Finally, African-American students are happier and are more likely to stay at a predominately black institution than at a traditionally white institution. In an article entitled “College Costs to double by 2020; Start Saving Now and Consider Black Institutions,” the author quotes Vivian Tillman of Spelman College who says that blacks should “encourage children in every way to study hard and be competitive so that they can have a better chance of getting scholarships.” The author goes on to state that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are affordable and feature small student-teacher ratios. The author concludes the essay with a quote from Tillman who notes that students at Spelman College have “a strong black experience” and get “an even broader experience interacting with people from all over the world” (College”). This article supports my contention that predominantly black schools are affordable. Alcorn State’s tuition costs are very reasonable, especially for Mississippi residents. Several of my classmates have told me that they attend Alcorn State because they......
