“BAMBOO FLOWERS”
Written by: Aloy Adlawan
Directed by: Maryo de Los Reyes

“Bamboo Flowers” presents a three-story script intertwined into one. The film talks about married life and single blessedness life of young and other strangers, about students’ aspirations and ambitions, about sons and daughters of farmers, about tourist guides, cultural workers, children and ordinary people, about tourists who visit the province.
“Bamboo Flowers” are literally the chandelier-shaped bamboo leaves/flowers which bloom on the bamboo trees that are in the final stages of death. This paradox is evident in the life in these islands where traditions maybe dying because times do change and because progress has bloomed and new things, outlooks, beliefs and practices have been introduced. Thus, there is erosion of traditions and since, there are new things to look forward to, there are also beliefs and practices that have to be abandoned or left behind.
This movie written by Aloy Adlawan is directed by Maryo de Los Reyes as his entry to this year’s Sining Pambansa, All Masters’ Edition National Film Festival. It is his tribute to his roots, particularly to his mother who hails in Alicia, Bohol; to the memories of his childhood visits to this island province; to its rich heritage and traditions; to its lushness and beautiful landscapes, and most especially to its people. The film will also be a tribute to the children of the world whose dreams and aspirations we have to hear and listen to and eventually help realize.

MOVIE PLOT: Omel played by Ruru Madrid is a teenager who lived his life by the river dancing and singing to tourist. He is kind, approachable, generous, intelligent, industrious, trustworthy, obedient, dependable, and optimistic and is a good-humour person. His simple life by the river turned around when he decides to go the city- Tagbilaran City to work for his family. As a typical Boholano boy, he resembles such good traits. He really works hard and easily gets promoted. Omel is an example of a true Boholano character that is dedicated not just to his work but also to his family. A native of Bohol who goes back to the province impoverished after losing her husband through a tragic death, for her husband committed suicide not to accept their loss and cannot live in just a simple life is played by Mylene Dizon as Sandra, however, Irma Adlawan as Berta is a tourist guide volunteer in the Abatan River cruise. Both Sandra and Berta is a mother. Eric, Sandras’ son and Omel, Bertas’ son. They both love their child. Sandra and her family used to live a rich life in Manila but gets down when her husband died, Berta, in the other hand, just live a simple life by the river and succeed when her son was discovered in one of the well known TV program- Prodige. Sandra and Berta have very different character exposure in the movie but they could get their similarities as a certified Boholana. Andong is played by Spanky Manikan. He is Omel’s grandfather. Omel called him Papong, the one who taught Omel to dance and sing for the tourists. Since he was a child, he always goes sailing by the river. Andong’s objective in the movie is all for his grandson. He wanted Omel not to limit his God given gifts. He wanted Omel to show his talent to others and use this as an extra income, too. He wanted Omel to be dependent enough and live by his own in the city. He wanted Omel to succeed and let them live happy and eternal with her mother Berta. And yes! Omel gets Lolo Andong’s entire wish for him. Eric is Sandra’s spoiled son who has adapted to the changing behaviour of his lifestyle because of technology and the demands of the new age. Sandra and Eric had a hard time to move on from their devastating life in Manila. Sandra could not accept what her husband did to them. Moreover, Sandra don’t know how to let Eric just live a simple life in Bohol. She sends Eric at a public school and Eric made a big adjustment. Crying on those happy memories in their pictures, Eric saw Sandra how much she hated what happen. Both talk to each other, then Sandra finds out that Eric was there when the incident took place, that all the sudden it was not just Sandra that can recall and reminish all of those times. Both realize that they need to move on and let those times passed away and live just the way they are now. Bingo played by Miggs Cuaderno is a classmate of Eric who once he bullies. Time flies, and Bingo became Eric’s best friend. It’s the reality of childhood when two hate each other at first and later on became the best of friends. They are comfortable to be together assuming that they have the same family experience. They really relate to each other. They laugh, they cry, they play and even they exchange gifts in lieu of the cheapness and expensiveness of things. Luis (Orlando Sol) is a son of a farmer who studies Nautical or Marine Technology but he can’t seem to pass his final exams. He feels disappointed every time he takes exams without passing it. He always asks his professor to let him pass but professor don’t give what he want. Every time he fails, he drinks all night with his friends. As an urban migrant, Luis was challenged and just decided to stop his studies and live in their town instead. Yet, Omel on the city who works at an Electronics Store is only assign in a stock area. Once he was ask to be assigned at the more public area, he accepted the task and more customers get in. Some made a video when he was singing and he was discovered on the television. Omel get successful when he was in the city. There are a lot of character decisions which I believe are particularly good. Berta’s decision to let Omel work in the city and be away from her would be one. Omel’s decision to accept the proposal given to him by the TV program- Prodige which made him more successful by his nice voice would be also one. Sandra’s decision to goes back in Bohol and let live a simple life with her son Eric. Another is Luis decision to live in his hometown and be a farmer in their land. Also, Dolores (Max Collins) decision not to go with the old tourist who offers her an opportunity of a lifetime and live with her boyfriend Luis instead, would be the best of them all. According to Lolo Andong, when he was still a child he hears the sound of the silver bells (pilak na bagting). When the bell rings, it will be heard up to the five near towns, Maribojoc, Cortes. For him, its significance is that if there is something you can show more, and then do so. Nor, as stated by Berta when she was having a lecture to the tourists along the river, she said that “When the flower blooms, the bamboo dies.” It simply means that if there is something say hi, there must also be something to say goodbye. In terms of Bohol culture, the movie reveals how Boholano accept and entertain well tourist, how good memories brings about when one visits the island province, how Boholano love and save the rich heritage and traditions, how Boholano maintain the lushness and beautiful landscapes and above all it is how Bohol made because of these Boholano people. Maybe, the most challenging scene in the movie was when Dolores faces the choice whether she’ll go with the old tourist in USA or stay in Bohol with her boyfriend. Then the most heartbreaking scene was when Omel was singing in his grand finals and his Papong was sailing in the river alone trying to reach the bamboo flower and suddenly fell down. PRODUCTION: Of the scenery, lights, props, costumes and physicality of actors, the strongest effect would be the scenery and the physicality of the actors. Scenery, for the one who watch the movie especially when a Boholano, because it helps realize the place and the setting of the story. It adds development to the movie; also advertise well known tourist spots in Bohol. Physicality of the actors because it is in the actors and actresses on how they deliver the play and how they portray their individual characters. However all of these elements, the scenery, lights, props, costumes and physicality of actors, contribute to the development of the movie. In absence of one, the movie could not be perfect or great as it is. There should be the oneness of the elements to make a productive movie. With the addition of the music and sound element, the movie will sure reinforce the mood and atmosphere of the story. Movie watcher can easily understand the flow of the story, some can also relate, too. Given a chance to recommend the movie or should I say play the movie, it would be possibly me. It should be me for I also have a great life experience which is worth sharing, for I have a life full of challenges which surely teenager can relate to, and for I have many sacrifices in life which made me a better person and made me a successful one, the one whose dreams and aspirations reach its goals. Bamboo Flower is really a great movie to all Boholano and the island province itself. This movie serves as the major remembrance before Bohol suffers from the killing earthquake last October 15. A million thanks to the writer, director, producer and all of the staff of the said movie. You made a great job! Thumbs up!…...

...configuration. Discuss how BHI is planning to implement QT and how it will all pan out using your knowledge of QT Bamboo House Incorporated has a problem that is fairly common in many different business practices. Their problem deals with queuing rates and queuing systems. According to the case study based on Bamboo House, they have attempted to detail a plan on how to approach their queuing theory problem. In order to have a successful queuing configuration/system, they need to have their service rate exceed their order rate and fully understand what both of those rates are. In reality, there are three different situations that can take place. The order rate can equal the service rate, the order rate can exceed the service rate, or the order rate can be less than the service rate. According to queuing theory, only the last option/situation is desirable. This is because if the order rate is equal to or greater than the service rate, the line will be never ending, which is obviously bad practice. After some calculation, I have found that Bamboo House Incorporated SHOULD be able to have a higher service rate than order rate for most of the time. That is according to the queuing configuration that was hinted at in the case study. However, if product demand does rise, there is no guarantee that the service rate stays above the order rate. This can be a very large problem for Bamboo House Incorporated. They need to establish a better queuing configuration if they experience......

The Flowers

...The Flowers The story takes place in the South of the USA. An indication of that is that Myop’s family is famers; lots of people were farmers in the south. Another indication is that they are black and probably poor since they get water from a spring. There are two settings in the story; the farm and the woods. Myop the girl in the story lives on the farm. The farm is where she feels comfortable and can live in her childish life full of innocent. At the farm there is a henhouse and a pigpen which she runs around and makes a beat with a knobby stick at the fence and sticking randomly to the chickens she like. As it said in the text: “She was ten, and nothing existed for her but her song…” That sentence describes the girl perfectly. She is a black ten year old girl who lives in a world with no fear and with no such thing as racism. The other setting of the story is the woods. If she had followed the path she used to walk with her mother nothing would had happened. But when she made her own path she stepped out of her own peaceful world. The further she moves in to the woods the gloomier it becomes. She has defiantly stepped out of her peaceful world when she stepped smack into the cranium of a dead man. The flowers have a big symbolic value in the story. They represent her innocence and ignorant world as a child. When she steps on the skull she begins to wonder but she still hasn’t found out that her childhood is ruined. Then she takes pink rose and see’s the......

The Flowers

...The Flowers “Growing up is losing some illusions, in order to acquire others” This was once said by Virginia Woolf. As a child you grow up having your own idea of what life is - one can even say that you live in an illusion. The child have no experiences to build his/hers world view on. When the child then grows up she is learning how the world actually works and the illusions shatters. This is a theme in the short story “The Flowers” (1976) from the collection titled “In Love and Trouble: Stories of Black Women” by Alice Walken. Based on what I know about Alice Walken and her work, I assume Myop is a young girl from a dark colored family in the south, which world limits to the wood behind her family’s house. In the beginning of the story Myop is a happy child with a child’s innocence and illusions. The atmosphere in the beginning is also very calm and peaceful. All these changes when Myop steps on a dead body in the wood. “.. and she reached down quickly, unafraid, to free herself” (p. 107 l. 33) As you see in this quote Myop is not afraid of the situation, but looks at it with a child’s eyes of interest, and trying to make her own experiences. She doesn’t know yet that she has to be afraid. The calmness is then broken and the sentiment changes. Something is wrong and when Myop wants to go back to the peacefulness of the morning, she can’t. The calmness she knows and is pursuing is gone, as Myop has left her childhood. The point of no return would be when Myop steps upon......

...FLOWER AMONG FLOWERS Flower among flowers, soft bud swooning, that the wind moves to a gentle crooning. Wind of heaven, wind of love, you who gladden all you espy; you who smile And will not sigh, candour and fragrance from above; you who perhaps Came down to earth to bring the lonely solace and mirth, and to be a joy For the heart to capture. They say that into your dawn you bear the immaculate soul A prisoner —bound with the ties of passion and rapture? They say you spread Good everywhere like the spring which fills the air with joy and flowers In April time. They say you brighten the soul that mourns when dark clouds gather, And that without thorns blossom the roses in your clime. If then, like a fairy, You enhance the joy of those on whom you glance with the magic charm God gave to you; oh, spare me an hour of your cheer, a single day of your career, that the breast may savour the bliss it knew! The 48-line verse talks of a romantic love for a girl, which is not surprising because Rizal had a lot of girlfriends. It seemed as if this was a personal poem because of the use of the word “I”. The metaphor of a flower is obviously a girl who is more beautiful than all the girls in her group that’s why it’s entitled Flower among Flowers. She is young like a “soft bud”. And when Rizal used onomatopoeia with the wind “crooning”, he was talking of how the flower makes the things it touches, the wind in particular, sing of love. The girl is perfect: beautiful and......

The Flowers

...The Flowers By Alice Walker The story is about a girl named Myop. She is ten years old and lives in a sharecropper cabin with her family. They live in the country where maize is grown cotton, peanuts and squash. They have a lot of farm animals and a forest in their backyard. In autumn the mother usually takes her out and collects nuts. Myop lives a wonderful and carefree life. Myop have explored the woods many times before, but one day she turns her back to the rusty sharecropper to explore the forest on her way. She finds ferns, leaves and strange blue flowers and a sweet suds bush. She gets farther and farther away from home and she thinks it's a little creepy and uncomfortable in the cove she ended up in. She describes it as "the air was damp, the silence close and deep." Suddenly she steps on something. A corpse of a man. Beside him a pink rose lay on the ground. The rose has something around the roots it turns out to be rotten remains of a tattered plowline. A last Myop lie down the blossoms and the story ends with the words "and the summer was over.” It is an omniscient narrator in third person narrative. Because the narrator knows what the girl thinks and feels without direct expression in the text. We follow the girl and her achievements seen from outside when the viewpoint is an external perspective. It makes the story neutral and you keep getting the exterior of knowledge, but not the interior. Therefore it forces us to even think what Myop thinks. And why......

...AléGryan's Flower Life is full of ups and downs. One spends too much time and energy focuses on the negative that he or she cannot see the positive. I learned this valuable lesson myself. I realize the chaos follows when one wanders aimlessly through life. I am building my future using my flower. My flower has a stem, six petals, and a core. My flower is centered on my past, present and future. It is based on knowledge, values, people, location, working conditions, and salary. Each petal represents my goals based on my experiences. My flower grows as I grow. My flower is a road map of where I came from and where I plan to go. It is my past, present, and future. I cannot reach for the stars without recognizing my past and present. For me, my past and present are the beginnings of who I am. I am thirty years old, an African-American, female who is also a soon to be single mother. All of the labels that describe me are considered a roadblock in life. However, I see them as stepping stones toward my goals. I know the value of hard work because I saw my mother achieve it. She was a single mother who worked hard and finished college with me in a stroller. I never realized the sacrifice she made until recently. She did not let labels hold her back and neither will I. My mother is part of the stem on my flower. For without her story, I would not have a story. It is easy to take the safe path and just hope for the best without putting forth any effort. ......

...characters. Author like Alice Walker in “The Flowers” clearly uses symbolism as a way to connect the character to the reader on different levels. Through a series of several symbols, Walker creates a vivid illustration of Myop's transition from innocence of childhood to the realities of life and all of its cruelties. Walker uses this whole situation of the corpse, flowers and summer to clearly illustrate the precise moment in which a child looses that treasured innocence. The danger is first introduced by Myop entering the woods. It is in these woods that Myop encounters the single event that will lead to her loss of innocence: finding the corpse of a lynched man. Myop steps, by accident, into the face of this corpse and although frightened continues to remain joyful. Myop clears the remains from the man's face to find all of his white teeth cracked and broken. The description of the body is given in great detailed, “Myop saw that he had large white teeth, all of them cracked or broken, long fingers, and very big bones. All his clothes had rotted away except some threads of blue denim from his overalls” (Walker 405). The detailed description of the body indicates his probable ethnicity which is African-American, like Myop. In addition, the corpse suggest that something that was once white and pure has been broken by the cruel and harsh reality of the world. Another symbol of innocence is the flowers that Myop happily picks. Flowers are a symbol of innocence because of......

Then I met, or rather got to know, the lady who threw me my first life line.” Angelou is letting the readers know that this story is about using something or someone as a inspiration to overcome your hardships and conquer your fears. 2. Angelou admires Mrs. Flowers because, to Angelou, she represented something elegant and new, proven in the sentence “She appealed to me because she was like people I had never met personally”. 3. Maya Angelou was ashamed of her mother in the presence of Mrs. Flowers because her mother did not speak proper English and was not as poised as Mrs. Flowers. Mrs. Flowers and momma behaved as if they were sisters, only separated by their dialect. 4. The lessons in living taught to Maya by Mrs. Flowers, were the importance of understanding people and the way they speak to one another. In layman’s terms, do not judge a book by its cover. I believe that this influenced Angelou in a way that made her want to become a writer, and she wanted to be able to communicate with various groups of people through her writings. 5.
