The difference between a poem and a short story starts with the structure but ends in the same way- their meanings and themes to tell the readers aim one thing, to entertain. For poems, the readers gets drawn to it through the different and interesting rhythms used in writing and reading them while for short stories, the characters, the settings and the plot of the story is what makes it interesting for readers. According to literature experts, creating a good plot with interesting settings is not enough for a story to be read but it also needs the reader’s imagination. Every reader can have their own visualization of what they are reading and sometimes, what they see and the way they interpret what they read might be different from the interpretation that the author want them to have. For example, the poem entitled “The Road Not Taken” and the short narratives entitled “A Worn Path” and “Used to Live Here Once” all have the same theme but when read together by different people and asked what do they think of the stories, they might give different descriptions. These stories and poem deal with one thing which is the main character’s journey towards the unknown and how the main character made decisions that will change the course their lives forever and their loved ones. The stories are presented in different ways. For Robert Frost, he presented his poem’s main character through a first person narration and showed a plot of a man going on a journey. The story of the woman on the “Worn Path” on the other hand was being narrated on a third person basis with the woman as the narrator and at the same time the main character. ...Discrimination Laura Smalt Eth/125 03/10/13 Winnie Mason Discrimination When I think of discrimination I think of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexuality, and religion. We will learn what discrimination is, how it is different from prejudice and stereotyping. Also what are the causes of discrimination and how it affects a person or persons? What is discrimination? Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary. If an employer refuses to hire you as a computer technician because you are a Native American and computer illiterate, this is not discrimination. Now, if an employer refuses to hire you because they feel that you are incompetent and they do not give you the chance to see if you are qualified, this is discrimination (Schaefer, 2012). You have to know and understand discrimination before you can know when discrimination is used. As for myself, I have never seen discrimination used. Would you consider an individual that has a phobia of midgets as discrimination? I am curious to know because my general manager has a phobia of midgets. I believe that it could be considered as discrimination, because she is not giving that person a chance regardless of their height. How do you know when an employer is not hiring you because of discrimination? Even if you ask the reason you are not hired, they can make up a reason to satisfy you or tell you what they think you want to hear.......

...Gender Roles and/or Marriage ENG 125: Introduction to Literature In Guy De Maupassant's, "The Necklace" and Kate Chopin's, "The Story of an Hour" the characters are females who struggle with inner conflicts. Many differences as well as likenesses are identified between the two characters, which would like to make major changes in their life. “The settings of the stories take place in the late 1800's, which during this time women were restricted from doing many things such as: working outside of the home, they were controlled by their spouses, and they had to be subservient females”(Wikipedia). Mrs. Mallard is the main character in "The Story of an Hour" and Mrs. Loisel is the character in "The Necklace." The type of tone the writers chose for the main characters were discontent women, who yearned for a better life than their current one. Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" is the story of Mathilde Loisel, who resents her current lifestyle. When Monsieur Loisel presents his wife with an invitation to a formal ball, she bursts into tears because she has nothing elegant to wear. Mathilde's husband agrees to let her buy a gown, and, following his suggestion, she borrows a beautiful necklace from a friend. As a result, she has a wonderful time at the ball. Art to me is anything that can be pleasing to the eye and something that I can enjoy in my own way. Culture refers to how I was brought up. As with any expressions art can be a picture, painting, photograph, music, or a sculpture. Anything that one’s mind can create that they appreciate can be considered art. Looking at art one can see it in books, magazines, museums, on walls of buildings, or on someone’s lawn. Art is defined as the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance (Dictionary, 2012). Some of our most revered American’s brought us the visual aspects of different forms of art. Norman Rockwell posted many of the most famous painting by an American in The Saturday Evening Post. One of his most illustrious paintings was “Rosie The Riveter” that spawned a revolution for women in the workplace taking over job’s dominated by men called off to war. There were some pretty big ones such as The Haymarket Strike of 1886, The Homestead Strike of 1892, and The Pullman Strike of 1893. I am going to touch on the Homestead Strike of 1982. The Homestead Strike was the largest strike of the 1800's. This strike happened because the Irish union workers were upset that Chinese immigrants were working for less than Americans were working for. During the strike things got out of hand. “The strike at the Homestead became violent when the company brought in armed guards from out of town. The guards were hired partly to protect the factory from the strikers. The guards were also expected to protect new workers that the company planned to bring in to replace the strikers. Not long after the strike began, there was a gun battle between the striking workers and the guards. Ten people were killed and many more were injured. The dead included both strikers and guards.” (Burns, 2009) With things out of hand the governor called in soldiers to make sure nothing further happened resulting in violence. The strike was not successful at all. The strike did not end the way the workers anticipated. Theme, tone, irony, and plot are just a few that really make a story come alive. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber (b. 1939) and “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin (b. 1894) are two short stories that are written many years apart but still convey the same struggle that many people face with being married. Both stories display individuals that are having a hard time “finding themselves” or trying to go back and imagine their independence more or less by finding ways of escaping the “trapped” feeling of marriage. Both of the stories are portraits of the struggle that men and women face during a marriage. “The Story of an Hour” tells of a woman with a very weak heart condition that has been told that her husband has been killed in a railroad accident.
